Me either.

Out of curiosity, what were you LOOKING for when you found it?

It's funny because we've all done it. He just had the nerve to make a video of it and put it on the Internet.

Too bad the sound and video get out of sync near the end.

That was cute =)

Someone should have walked in on him and stood behind him at the end.

Cuz who hasn't be caught dancing (even seat dancing) in their room?

That is both funny and disturbing on so many levels that I wouldn't know where to begin. Just the fact that he had choreography, albeit it was chair dancing, to the song is worth a big huge spew of soda across the keyboard.

*grin* That's how it was...at first mild amusement, then a smile, then a grin, then giggles, then snickers, and a belly laugh that brought me attention and made me post it to Hatrack.

Got it bookmarked, which I do for very few videos or songs. And the lip-synching dude's got rhythm&style ta make ya smile, which is all ya can ask of any entertainer.

Okay, time for a viral marketing campaign to find out the name of the song, the group who did this arrangement, and to say thanks to the dude by making him famous.

This song got famous all over Europe.

My brother-in-law would so love the Lego-zone video. I don't find it funny, though, just impressive and a little scary that someone would do that.

The song is now stuck in my head, of course. Oh, well, if you have to listen to pop, I suppose there's worse stuff than that.

BTW, don't go to the home page of the site Katie originally linked to if you don't want to see a not-so-great (dare I say, slash-dot worthy?) picture right in the middle of your screen. Katie, how did you find that, hmmm? [No No] [Wink] [Razz]

P.S. I am pretty sure the song is not German. I am less certain it isn't French. Too many palatal glides, not enough gutturals for German. And the absence of what we call a long i.

mothertree, I don't know who told you that, but it's wrong; Lithuanian is on a whole other branch, related only to the other Baltic languages. Italian and Romanian are the two languages that remain closest to the original Latin, IIRC.

Dancing anime girl.

This one starts with some bizarre animated dancing kittens . . . and then it gets REALLY weird.

Want to see Mario dance? (Warning: potentially offensive language on opening screen.)

Soft pink, with stenciled hearts around the ceiling. I was the only girl. I got so overloaded that when I was finally able to decorate it for myself, everything was dark green and gray.

Between you and Annie, I'm almost persuaded to try belly-dancing. [Smile] If I do, I'm taking this song.

The class I took was at a park, and it was really cool; it was for women only, and no men were even allowed to watch. It was held indoors, and a perimeter was strictly enforced, so we could all feel comfy in our leotards or crop-tops and swishy skirts with jingly things. There was a public performance at the end, but you didn't have to participate, and the cost was only $65. It was the best class ever.

Megan, a lot of the women in my class were doing it to lose weight. It's a real workout, but not too much. And it worked, too; a lot of the women in it were in TOPS, and said that they went down fairly dramatically during that time.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

The Romanian text for the song is only marginally Latinesque. Both French and Spanish (and what I've seen of Portugese) are closer in content words. I don't know anything about Romanian grammar and syntax, so maybe there's soem similarities to Latin there, but on the surface it would definitely not be my first choice as "language closest to Latin roots."

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Romanian has been influenced by the slavic languages, and, in this case, by English ("Allo" is "hello" on a cellphone, for instance). However, it is cited often as one of the "purer" Latin languages by the people I know who talk languages. I don't know why.

Having had experience with both Lithuanian and Romanian, personally, I hear a lot of similarities between Latin and Romanian, very few between Lithuanian and Romanian. But that's just me. [Smile]

Lithuanian everything is pretty awesome. (Except history. Ouch.) But their language, dances, costumes, and food are all totally great. *snort*

Suuuuure.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Well, no one else has commented on the stalker-ish-ness of the lyrics.

So I guess it's time to analyze them, line by line.
quote:
Ma-ia-hii
Ma-ia-huu
Ma-ia-hoo
Ma-ia-haha

The translation claims these are just nonsense words. But are they? No idea if any of it sounds like Romanian words, but "maya" is a word in some languages, and "Maya" is a name in others. And "haha" is a laughing sound.
quote:
Alo, Salut, sunt eu, un haiduc,
Hello [on a cellphone], greetings, it's me, an outlaw,

Interesting. So, he's self-identifying as a criminal.
quote:
Si te rog, iubirea mea, primeste fericirea.
I ask you, my love, to accept happiness.

Or? Sounds a bit like a threat.
quote:
Alo, alo, sunt eu Picasso,
Hello, hello, it's me, Picasso,

He has some sort of art fetish, OR, he's threatening to rearrange her face.
quote:
Ti-am dat beep, si sunt voinic,
I sent you a beep [cellphone signal], and I'm brave [or strong],

Another implied threat.
quote:
Dar sa stii nu-ti cer nimic.
But you should know that I'm not asking for anything from you.

That's what they all say.
quote:
Vrei sa pleci dar nu ma, nu ma iei,
Nu ma, nu ma iei, nu ma, nu ma, nu ma iei.

You want to leave but you don't want don't want to take me, don't want don't want to take me, don't want don't want don't want to take me.

He doesn't want to let her get away, even though that's clearly what she wants.
quote:
Chipul tau si dragostea din tei,
Your face and the love from the linden trees,

This line must be important -- the title comes from it. But I don't quite get it. Linden trees apparently smell nice, shed lots, and the leaves can be used to brew tea as a cold remedy. Best guess: symbol of beauty and light.
quote:
Mi-amintesc de ochii tai.
And I remember your eyes.

Oooh, creepy!

The rest of the lines pretty much repeat.

So, he's not asking anything of her, BUT: this criminal is laughing at her, threatening her, sees her as a symbol of idealized beauty (rather than a real person) and is fixated on her eyes.

Stalker-ish, neh?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I think he's remembering making love to her under the linden trees, since most translations of the title render it "Love Among the Linden Trees", not "from".

And yes, it's stalkerish, but not like "Every Breath You Take". (I know Lost Boys is your FAVORITE book, Rivka. [Razz] )

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ah, that would indeed make more sense.

And yes, it is more subtle than Every Breath -- but what isn't?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Ugh.. that Italian version... not the same.
And the chick singing it is like... a baritone! [Eek!]

quote:
Now considered both, a dancing anthem, and a gay anthem, it also achieved some club success in the US. A collaboration between Dan Balan of O-Zone, and New York DJ Lucas Prata created a version of the same tune in English. This version, renamed "Mai A Hee", is only superficially connected to the original lyrics, with no mention of trees.

I KNEW the Family would pick up on this song!! [Big Grin] Shame I haven't actually been out to a gay club in forever... *sigh*

And there is an English version?? But it doesn't sing about the trees??? [Cry]

[ROFL] Ah! Ha hah hah! Too funny!

I think it's funny that some people don't like listening to lyrics they don't understand. I listen to just about anything that sounds cool, and probably understand the lyrics to about 45% of my library. I pride myself in at least figuring out what language they're in, though. [Smile] Funny that we have such different reactions.

I bought the song from iTunes, and introduced it to my (16 year old) sister this morning. She thought it was hilarious and we kept singing it while I drove her to school. She then frantically tried to find a radio station with something else to get stuck in her head so she wouldn't be singing "Mai a ha ha!" all day. I waited until she was in class and then called and left a message on her cell phone: "Mai a hee, mai a hoo...."

My sister went on a student ambassador trip this last summer to Europe and came home loving some European techno-pop song. She made me listen to it once and I was like, "...Uhh...ok..."

I called home tonight and was telling my dad about this video and song, and he was like, "It's not that awful song your sister likes so much is it?" I asked to talk to my sister.

It is.

MEANWHILE I was having a crummy morning (forgetting to do important homework, oversleeping, not having dinner last night or breakfast this morning, and having a 2nd degree burn on my poor finger are just...agh.), and now that song is stuck in my head again. I'd watch the video again and cheer myself up, but I'm sitting in class and that just wouldn't fly. Besides...thinking about that video already makes me crack a smile as is. [Smile] [Laugh]

I was thinking about this last night, Rivka, and have a less-stalkerish, still creepy, but less non-sensical idea about what the song means. (Incidentally, I fell asleep singing it under my breath and woke up with it in my head.) But yours is funnier, so I think I'll leave it be.

The whole song is just the result of the following bet...
"I bet you can't write a song that uses the word "blue" a hundred times!"

Apparently both the better and song writer were high at the time. However, the song writer was high longer and there you have it. Blue.

Okay, this song is infectious. I thought the lip-synching guy video was amusing once, and I figured I was done with it. After watching all the other videos, though, I can't get this bloody thing out of my head. Now I've transcribed the lyrics into Word and am trying to memorize them, even though I don't speak a word of Romanian. [Grumble]

It's the chorus, I think. It's the whole "nu ma, nu ma iei" thing. It just plain sounds cool.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I've been singing it non-stop all day, Verily. Try reading the lyrics as you listen to the song, I memorized them faster that way. (Why did I do this? Because if I was going to have the durned thing stuck in my head, I wanted to have the right durned words in there. Nothing more annoying than having a song in your head you don't know the words to, and so can't even sing.)

I kept trying to avoid this thread as long as possible, but... :shudders:

Anyway, gnixing is right, it's "tăi" not "tei" in this line: "Mi-amintesc de ochii tăi". Actually "mi" is a reflexive form of the first person singular pronoun, since the verb "to remember" is reflexive in Romanian. The "I" isn't used since Romanian has different forms for the verb depending on the person. "de" is a preposition that is used here because the verb is intransitive. The funny thing is that if you say you remember something it's transitive, and if you say you remember someone it's intransitive...

"tei" is indeed "linden", and "dragoste" is "love". There are also other words for love, and the verb "to love" is "a (= to) iubi". The noun from this is "iubire".

And if you're wondering about the "sf" or "sm" they are short for: "substantiv" (noun) "feminin" and "masculin". We also have neuter nouns which oddly have a male singular form and female plural one. [Dont Know]

Also, "haiduc" were the Romanian "Robin Hood"s, taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Unfortunately we don't have them around anymore...

quote:
Ma-ia-hii
Ma-ia-huu
Ma-ia-hoo
Ma-ia-haha

Either a name or really nothing but sounds. I'm inclined to say the latter.

"Salut" is just a way to say "hello" - in person, not on the cellphone, not "greetings". And while "alo" indeed means "hello" on a phone I have to say that it's more likely that "hello" and "alo" both come from French than the other way around.

As for why linden is seen as a romantic symbol, that's because our greatest poet, Mihai Eminescu used it as such in his poems. Love "among the linden flowers" was present in many of his love poems, and he actually had a favorite linden. If I remember correctly thay linden's still around and quite visited. [Wink] Here's a little about Eminescu and also some translated poems: Mihai Eminescu .

Sure enough, iTunes is downloading the entire album for me even as we speak.

Because I just found out that apparently I am over a year behind the times. But the Na Nachers have apparently succumbed to Dragostea Din Tei fever. The original version of their signature song apparently was no longer sufficient. So it’s been set to a rather familiar tune.

Some people are having fun with it.

(What is "Na Nach" anyway?)

Someone should update wikipedia. [Razz]
