In another thread SteveRogers questioned what jatraqueros were, and how you became one. Despite being told that there were no hard and fast rules, he seemed eager for a rite of passage of sorts, so I offered to create one for him. He foolishly accepted, and rivka graciously offered to help. Hobbes [Smile] questioned my qualifications, as compared to some I am a newbie myself, but as he did not step up to the challenge himself I am declaring myself qualified. [Razz]

SteveRogers, this is your Rite of Passage into Jatraquerohood. When you answer the below questions, I will declare you a jatraquero. What this means, basically, is that I will consider you a full-fledged member of the community, and defend you against anyone who calls you a newbie. Because once you get through this, you will not be a newbie. [Smile] If you're acting really silly I might concede that you're a newish jatraquero, but a jatraquero you will be nonetheless!

In deference for the fact that you have real schoolwork to do, the questions are mostly in short answer format. You may, and will need to, use all of the resources of Hatrack at your disposal. This includes other Hatrackers, if you can convince them to help you. Part of the community, after all, is the community... we help each other out, answer questions in the areas of our expertise, and point people in the right direction. I hope that if you get stuck you will ask for help and not answers, and I hope that the community will help you.

Many of the questions have multiple correct answers. If you take this seriously, it would be difficult to get a "wrong" answer... but I reserve the right to ask you to reconsider any answers before declaring the Rite complete. Feel free to answer the questions in any order, in individual posts... you don't need to save it all up and post your entire answer at once. And take as long as you need, there is no time limit.

To the Peanut Gallery... SteveRogers has asked for this, and is entering into it in good faith. Please restrict your participation to the friendly, helpful variety. And please don't go posting answers or hints if he doesn't ask for help, here or anywhere else. This includes just bumping the relevant threads. Thank you.

Without further delay...

1. Name 15 states where Hatrackers live and specify at least one Hatracker per state. (Example: Missouri, SteveRogers)

2. Find a site where Hatrack pictures are hosted. Link to a picture of a jatraquero/a with OSC. Extra Credit: Get a picture of yourself posted.

3. Find a Landmark Thread by a jatraquero/a you admire. Tell us one thing you learned about them from the Landmark.

4. Name a downloadable spellcheck program you can use with Hatrack.

5. Name 10 countries where Hatrackers live and specify at least one hatracker per country.

6. What is the significance of the quote "It doesn't do anything. That's the beauty of it!"

7. How many newbie FAQ threads can you find?

8. OSC has several logins (all variants of his name). What is the member number of at least one of his logins?

9. Name five frequent punners

10. Define "meme." Name one.

11. Who started the Landmark tradition?

12. What does it mean to "blow the whistle" on a post? When should you do it?

13. Name a jatraquero/a who is a:
Doctor
Law Student
Teacher
Pharmacist
Stay-at-home Parent
Art Student
Circus Performer
Child Under the Age of 1

14. Name three past hatrack gatherings.

15. Find and link to a picture of the hatracker who resembles OSC, and the thread discussing the resemblance.

Hey Geoff, I sent your mother the link of the picture of the non-related hatracker who resembles OSC, and she thought the resemblance was striking too. They appear to be of similar ages too [Wink]

It is enough, that several people, including myself who have met your Dad did massive double takes upon meeting the other person. Admittedly we haven't spent the same amount of time around your dad that you have, so you'd probably never mistake one for the other.

But if your dad ever needed a body double to fool the masses for some reason, I think this person would.

The quote one I think you just need to keep reading the thread... and I don't think there is anyone on this board who I would accept that something is correct just because they said it, even and/or especially Tom, depending on how snarky he seems to be feeling at the moment. [Wink]

I do expect him to correct his answer, but I'm fine with what Kama posted. It doesn't seem fair to tell him that part of a 10 part answer is wrong without telling him what part. This way he can see what country he listed isn't on Kama's list, and hopefully fix his.

I'm undecided on how to judge the state one, and am asking for help... one of the people listed is listed in their "home" state, but they are in a different state for college right now, and pretty vocal about it. Do I give it to him or not?

Superstation had a 1st birthday party way back in November. I can't think of anyone younger who logged on: they may be frightened by the prospect of becoming a newbie pounced upon for less than perfect typing and writing skills.

Go to quidscribis in SriLanka cuz enjeeo moved back home to Australia.

And with her usual casual cruelty of ignoring poor poor aspectre, Kama neglected to mention that certain someone who lives in a euphoric state in an undiscovered country, which makes one more apiece for both lists.

But not about the countries. You practically handed them to him on a silver platter. And one that he made a mistake on - well, he'd get slapped by the person in question for that. There's a lot of animosity between the two countries, and it becomes really obvious during cricket matches.

But I also wonder that he listed the one person and not the other. I mean, the one he listed has only posted like a dozen times, and only once or twice in the last year.

Some of the questions are hilarious, by the way. Kudos for coming up with them. Steve, they're really not that hard. [Big Grin]

Okay, Steve... the wrong country is India. The hints you were given in this thread were to check a recent thread about a major disaster, that would be the tsunami thread. But there's an easier way to do it... the pin in the map said fahim & quidscribis. quidscribis has posted right above us. If you click her name, that brings up her profile, and you can find out where they live.

The wrong state is Hobbes, in Colorado. He's posted in this thread, too.

So fix those and you've got 1, 3, 5, 8, & 12. That's a third of the way there! What other ones are you working on?

But his profile doesn't say Colorado, I checked. And he's not listed in Colorado on the Hatrack Factions list, he's with the other possible clump. I guessing that he just hasn't changed the map from when he originally stuck it, the map's been out of general circulation for awhile.

I need defintions....of punners and meme....

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

10. Define "meme." Name one.

Richard Dawkins coined the term meme in his 1976 book, "The Selfish Gene." Memes (the word rhymes with dreams and is short for mimemes, from the word mimetic) are infectious ideas or any other things that spread by imitation from person to person - a jingle, a joke, a fashion, the smiley face or the concept of hell. Memes propagate from brain to brain much as genes spread from body to body. Thus, Mr. Dawkins wrote, they really "should be regarded as living structures, not just metaphorically but technically."

Such as: the poncho, t-shirts with sayings on them, and the idea that Bush is and idiot [Big Grin]

Punners I'll define for you... it's the group of people who like to make puns, and frequently have threads devoted entirely to punning.

Okay now, the question is to name five frequent punners, not five puns. Bob_Scopatz is certainly a frequent punner, but you need four more. (There's another thread in the first 5 on the forum right now that should make this very easy.

Okay, for under a year old, do a search for threads with "baby" in the subject. Then in this thread we gave you the month the baby was born, so that should tell you when to look, and dkw pointed out where in the thread the kidlet posted. That shold help. [Razz] Now I'm off, have fun!

Added: Also, punwit's right about not editing your posts in such a way that it completely changes them. You did it a couple of times to me, too... it's cool to go back and fix typos or add something at the end, but anything more drastic then that you need to say that you edited it, otherwise it makes other people's responses to you that came before the edit look silly. I thought that OSC was against abuse....and the sight where pictures of Hatrackers go is foobonic.....and I would post a picture of myself but I don't know how.....and don't have any good pictures of myself.....and I'm ugly anyway.......so I think those certain barriers will keep you picture-of-SteveRogers free...... *curious*

Does anyone know the list of various Cons and Shindas?

Obviously some have more people than others, so I'd put like a 5 jatraquero minimum on them, unless it was a really really early one.

EnderCon
Wenchcon I
Wenchcon II
Kama Con
SoCal Shinda(s)... not sure how many.

NewEngland clump Kama Con prequel

Wenchcon III this year
Dallas Con upcoming?
and BobNDana Con...

There was the "Spankin'" New England "Con", where we were deemed PG-13 by Dragon's mom, that was the largest gathering this side of KamaCon and EnderCon (unless one of the Florida clump meetings was larger). There was also the lesser known ScopatzCon out this way, and then there was KamaCon, Wet T-Shirt Edition.

Mmmmm... Wet t-shirts.

Did you follow my hint? Re-read this thread, the part where dkw, Narnia, and I are talking about the baby hatrackers. Find the month when the baby was born. Also notice that dkw said what page of the thread the baby posted in.

Do a search for "baby" in subject lines, then look for threads in the month you found above. Check the page you found above.

I'm not helping you any more than that, even though there are several other hints in this thread. [Smile]

I think a “Con” has to involve people from more than one geographical area. Otherwise it’s a clump gathering. And if only one person (or family) from another clump is visiting, it’s a cross-clump gathering. A Con involves major planning, an open invitation, and long-distance travel specifically for the event.

Maybe Chris will come to another jaialaiclumpgathering. I know he's not much into sports, but since the winner is determined not so much by athletic ability as by how many vowels they have in their last name, it's not really a sport.

Sara, you may do whatever makes you comfortable. And I have a very comfy chair in my sunroom, which is through an arch from the living room, if you want to be a little more removed than just in the corner but still be nearby.

As far as activities, I'm really not planning anything other than dinner Friday night and the henna itself. I don't know how much henna people want to do... we could end up with one design each, or covering all available skin space. So I figure we'll go with the flow, and have games and stuff available if we get tired of henna. Or we can just sit around and drink hot chocolate and giggle.

If it has become a burden then don't worry about it. I would suggest that you dispense with the, "I'll finish when..." posts because they are superfluous. I hope you don't find this advice rude because I'm just hoping to help.

Can I be considered a Jatraquero without finishing the last two questions........I'm busy trying to prove that I've given up lying on Hatrack........and doing homework for school............

Dude, don't try to prove it, just let it happen in it's own time.

Steve, I think I told you right from the start that I have no special power to confirm jatraqueroness on anyone. If you decide you are one, then you are one. That being said, I told you if you could answer my questions I would publicly declare you a jatraquero. If you do not finish the questions, I will have no pronouncement to make. That's okay. If you're stressed or don't have time, let the thread die. Stop bumping it and it will go away. But I don't change the rules once the game's started.

Also, what Kwea said is right. You've publically admited to lying twice, and not little lies. I would venture to say most of us didn't believe either of them in the first place and were too polite to say so, but that's irrelevant. You cannot, at this point, prove that you are not still lying, and the more you keep trying in that other thread the worse off you're going to be. At this point, the best thing you can do is apologize, say you'll be upfront going forward, and accept the fact that people are going to take everything you say with a grain of salt for awhile. That's the consequence for lying. If you remain active and treat people with respect, which includes not making up fantastical tales, people will gradually start to trust you again.

Also, you should really know that Tom & Dag aren't saying what they're saying to attack you. They're not trying to be mean, and it doesn't mean they don't want to be your friend. They are both very honest, straightforward people, who believe in telling you how they feel about things. Don't take it so hard. Like I said, you can't at this point prove anything. If you really want this to work, the best thing to do is to conceed graciously and quit trying to say you're not lying now. You can still get over this, it's okay.
