This lurker wants to know if any of you, besides Frisco, are going to Boskone?

Usually topics I want to watch people discuss come up. SSM, Iraq, One line descriptions of people, why teachers are paid too little, Lost, 24, and various landmark threads have given me hours of interesting reading. As a lurker of 3 years I thank you for having interesting conversations. Or at least thanks for having conversations in a place where I can skip the boring parts.

However, no one has mentioned boskone since December ; I was hoping to meet some of you there. Or just stare at you from a distance as I do here. So I went and registared this spiffy new nickname just to start this thread.

If you're not going to come to Boston please leave an excuse. Like "I need to vacuum my bed that weekend" or "Boston smells like orbitz gum, why would I subject myself to that?" or " I hated worldcon so much I got kidney stones." or "The voices in my head haven't mentioned Boskone."

Greg

We're all just avoiding Frisco.

3 years lurking, huh? Congrats on posting!

Online, anyway. IRL I rarely turn purple (or blue) and quake.

No, but you do a wonderful double take/ surprised expression. Like when you heard that Ems calls Jeff "Abba". [Big Grin]

*giggle* Ok, that's true.

I still get a kick out of telling people about that! [Big Grin]

I don't see how it's any funnier than me calling individually wrapped American cheese "bag cheese". Kids say stuff. [Dont Know]

I am not working this Sunday, I think....what day is OSC going to be there? The whole weekend?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Kwea, you can't go! That would make me a liar.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

What..I can still go and avoid him, right? That would make us both correct.

ah......are you saying elviis is Frisco?

(slow to catch on to these things...)

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

No, no, FG, not at all.

It's just that elviis asked why no one but Frisco was going, so the obvious answer seemed to me to be that we were all avoiding Frisco. We couldn't be avoiding elviis, since we didn't know he existed 'til now.

elviis, are you going to post more now, or just go back to lurking unless we again ignore a topic you wish to listen to?

So...does anyone know if OSC is going to be there on Sunday? I can;t find anything telling me on the website.

If he is there, I will probably go....if not, probably not.

Jenni has to work, so she won't be there at all.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

What, you don't want to spend Sunday watching rivka wash her hair with me? [Big Grin]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Now wait just one cotton-pickin' minute.

There will be no unrelated male-type-people watching the hair-washing.

On second thought, there will be no unrelated people of any gender watching the hair-washing.

Do I look like Batsheva to you? [Razz]

I have a slight problem with the name Elvis after becoming a fan of the song "Elvis is Everywhere" by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper. I find it difficult to not shout "Elvis needs boats!" every time I see the name. Hmm...

My excuse: Boston? Now? Yeah, right. As if I have the time. Love to, but can't.

Kwea -- OSC will be there for the entire convention. Yes, including Sunday. Thanks for asking -- from the tone of the forum lately I was beginning to wonder if there was anybody left who would give a dang [Smile] Kristine

I only lurk at work.

I think that quote fits me well. Except you forgot my third "i"; the one I use to watch people wash their hair.

Thanks for the excuses.

I will be there, to be sure, so you know that I care!

[Big Grin]

I won't apoligize to the board, but I do know that lots of GOOD things are said about him and his writing here every day, even if people don't always agree with his political views. Probably 95% of us here (if not more) came here because of his writing, so that should count for something.

I own just about every book he has written, and while I have a very good library, there are very few authors that I would actually like to meet....and he is one of them.

Too bad Geoff won't be there, he was one of the first people I talked to here when I joined, so I would have liked the chance to meet him IRL.

I hope to see you there, and thank you for replying; I was wondering if anyone knew if he would be there Sunday, and the reason I loggged on this morning was to try and e-amil you to find out. [Big Grin]

[Frown] Kristine, it makes me sad that you feel that way. There are plenty of us who certainly do -- even if we don't post fangirly posts all the time.

I would, but it just gets embarrassing, you know? [Wink]

But rest assured, Scott certainly has many fans here. [Smile]

Just echoing rivka and kwea, Kristine. Still fans of OSC and care about meeting the writer we admire. I recently found my copy of the Worthing Saga at my father's house and squealed with littlefangirl glee. [Big Grin]

Just don't tell anyone that I squeal like a little girl. It'll spoil my tough image. [Wink]

It makes me horribly sad that you'd think that, Kristine. I think even the critics only criticize because they are trying to fit a real-life person into their concept of this hero. I come and go on other forums, and I lurk on a few, but Hatrack is online home and 90% of that is because is the home base for my favorite living author.

I try to dial down the wild-eyed fangirlness, to avoid freaking anyone out, but I am proud to say I've hooked two people on Ender's Game in the past year. [Smile] I was talking to a group of friends once and said "my favorite author", and one of them called out "Card, right?" It's almost embarassing to me, but maybe I shouldn't hide the fanitude as much. [Smile]

I'm not going to Boskone, but I would really love to. It's nice to see you, elviiis. [Smile]

What, so it's just me, Kwea, and three-eyed Elvis?

Come on, people...I promise I'll shower this time.

Honestly, if I lived closer to Boston, I might, but WenchCon next month is the extent of my travel budget for the year, I think.

Oh Kristine, please don't feel that way - there are plenty of us who would love to meet our favorite Uncle.

Boston is just a little too far away from Springville Alabama for me to pull it off this time.

Last night I picked up Pastwatch again, because I hadn't read it in a long time, and began re-reading it. When I'm bored or just tired of everything else, I know I can always pick up an OSC book and still enjoy it.

Why, thank you, Rivka! What a wonderful. . .

Oh. Wait.

[Grumble]

I know! I'll make my very own website and invite everyone to come over and complain about what a terrible person I am!

Come One, Come All!

ScottR, I think you do actually a little fan club for your work that tries to keep it under wraps avoid freaking anyone out. I know of at least four members. Not that I've, uh, noticed or anything.

Hmmmm. My apologies for misspelling your nick, I know I dislike when people do it to mine.

What other sorts of things are you interested in?

Edit: Duh. Also, I am a huge fan of OSC and would jump at the chance to go to a con/signing that he would be at. The one time he came here I was away at school, but my mom brought one of my books to get signed for me. [Big Grin] I have never read one of OSC's opinion columns...I prefer to be involved in discussions rather than read opinions, and since I don't read them I also usually don't read the threads that spring up about them. But however OSC chooses to present his opinions, I admire him as a writer and for beign willing to speak up for what he believes in, and greatly, greatly appreciate him and his for hosting this fabulous forum.

How come OSC (almost) never comes to Miami? [Wink]

(And the one time he did, I missed it. [Mad] )

Posted by JaneX (Member # 2026) on :

I actually live fairly close to Boston, but I (a) have no money, and (b) have an exam the day after the con that I'm really nervous about.

I still think OSC's cool, though. [Smile]

I still think Uncle Orson should come to Montana. Even if I couldn't drum up many literary types, we could always just have a really nice dinner. [Smile]

I would love to come visit. I need to start working for the airlines. I'll be in Las Vegas in March - that's closer!

I'd love to meet Orson Scott Card. Regardless of his political opinions, he's written all of the books that I like best. (I recently read Hart's Hope and OH... MAN.... BEST BOOK EVER.) I'm also sorry you feel that way, Kristine. [Frown] We love your husband and we love you.

Photoshop World?

Jealous! Jealous!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Maybe I should re-read Hart's Hope. I got it because I'd been looking for ages, and was so excited to read it; I read it on the plane out to CA-- while I was 6 months pregnant. [Cry] Bad idea!!! [Angst] Now I'm thinking I should read it again, from a little less hormonal and upset standpoint, but I'm afraid to...

I am just so bummed that I missed this whole Boskone thread, and made other plans.

My groupie skills are failing me!

Posted by elviiis (Member # 7382) on :

Boskone captures many of my interests. Writing, reading, and hanging out with nerds.

Although OSC will be the highlight of the weekend, I also look forward to Jim McDonald reading an exerpt from “Atlanta Nights.”

The whole “Atlanta Nights” sting, is, IMO, one of the best hoaxes of the 21st century. Sure, better ones will come, but this sets a standard of vengeance and cruelty that I find delicious.

Please read more about it.

Uncle Jim comes clean

TNH’s collection of links about the story.

Travis Tea’s web page. Be sure to say his name out loud.

The blessed manuscript.

A list of the guilty parties.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Hmmmm, I don't think I've ever heard of the Atlanta Nights thing. I'll have to check it out next week, it sounds interesting.

So, why the three i's, elviiis? And how would you pronounce that, if you were going to?

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

I cannot read the manuscript. It's just too painful.

Posted by elviiis (Member # 7382) on :

Yeah, the manuscript is revolting. I can only read a little at a time before my eyes begin to bleed.

elviiis is easy to say because two of the i's are silent. The third i comes from an old nickelodeon show.
