AJ just IMed me to say that Ciara's water just broke and they expect puppies soon. [The Wave]

Someone will tell information as it comes in.

WOW WOW!!!

Dogs sure don't gestate for long... Unless, this is a different dog and I am stupid.

The gestation period is 63 days, and it can go five days longer or shorter, she's at 58 right now.

Well, I wish I had news, but I don't. We had a rush of discharge at 8:30pm. I was told that I should wait approximately 6 hours and at that point call the emergency vet if nothing had happened.

She's had maybe three contractions and then it's basically all stopped. I just called the emergency vet. They asked if she was in distress. I said no, she isn't, she's basically nodding off and sleeping. The vet said that she's probably just still in the early stages of labor and if she isn't in distress not to bring her in. Basically to trust her and Nature on the subject. She's snoozing so I'll just sit here and wait for her.

Amen, beverly! [Smile] Although the golden retriever on Smallville yesterday was pretty dang cute...

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

No puppies yet. Calling my vet shortly. We both slept for close to 5 hours. She's totally fine, happy, tail wagging etc. If I hadn't seen the discharge, and was going off of her alone I wouldn't be worried right now. The contractions basically completely stopped, she's only had maybe three and none of them were terribbly strong. I can still feel puppy movement inside.

Yay for you and Ciara, AJ. If you've never watched an animal deliver, it's grody and fascinating all at the same time. I'm definitely no expert, but Mother Nature did just fine with the kittens I witnessed. I hope everything goes just as smoothly for you guys.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Talked to the vet, no cause for concern yet. He said stay home and keep an eye on her for today, and he predicts that she will have them tomorrow right before closing. So we are on the slow road. I talked to a couple of other corgi breeders and they said sometimes things go fast and sometimes they go slow but basically to trust her.

AJ

Good luck. (And give Ciara a scratch behind the ears from Bob, Smokey, & me.)

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Fiazko I have seen a friend's dog give birth before. I actually caught two of the puppies. But, this is slightly different because Ciara's never had a litter before. After the first litter you can generally predict their behavior, but we don't know with her yet what her behavior is!

We had to c-section her. She wasn't going into labor after 3 shots of pitocin. After the operation it became clear why. She had ELEVEN PUPPIES in there. Basically the uterus muscles were so distended they were like rubber bands that had lost their stretch. They couldn't contract enough to create contractions.

Unfortunately we lost one boy, well he didn't have a heartbeat to begin with. But considering the complications that wasn't too bad. So we have 3 red boys, 2 red girls and 5 brindle girls!

Having to supplement with formula because her milk is coming in slower due to the c-section. Also more of a problem of acceptance/rejection, though she seems to be doing good so far.

ELEVEN?! No wonder she was huge!

Poor Ciara! Glad she's doing ok, and that most of the puppies are as well.

Sad about the one. [Frown]

But wow, you are gonna have your hands full! One recovering mom and TEN puppies. [Eek!]

Good LUCK!

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

Wow - congratulations to both you and Ciara!

And commiserations for the little guy [Frown]

Wow o wow - 10 puppies!

Can I have a brindle girl? Or, if puppies don't like travelling to Australia, can I see photos?

(I have a feeling the latter is more practicable [Smile] )

That's awesome, Aj. I'm so glad that Ciara is ok, and all the puppies are going good. I can't wait to see pictures!
We had a slightly difficult foaling on sunday while my manager was gone, and I was a nervous wreck. But everything turned out ok.

Edit: Let me know when it would be ok for Ken and I to come see them.

Ni!

Ouch.

And poor Ciara, having to have Pitocin... That stuff hurts like all git out. [Cry]

But I'm glad she's doing okay now.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

I'm glad I'm not a doggie. I think the chances of me conceiving 11 at one time are pretty slim.

Sounded like a rough experience for poor Mama! And the one that was lost. [Frown] I bet it was pretty crowded in there.

Wow, good job ciara! AJ, you're such a good doggy mommy, And it's great you stayed home today with her. Take a rest from hatrack to sit and stare at the babies! 11 seems like a lot for a dog that size (yeah I know they're not that little, but 30 pounds, 11 puppies)

go do this [Sleep] or [The Wave]

Smallest pup is 4 ounces which is really tiny, but so far she's been vigorous. Ciara has been letting them nurse but hasn't truly accepted them yet. I'm inflating the airmattress next to the whelping box tonight.

kwisni, give me a couple of weeks and then it will probably be ok. Right now I'm pretty involved with making sure they all eat properly.

Wow! That's almost as many as my uncle's boycan who had thirteen puppies, two of which died. The parallels we drew between Starr and 101 Dalmations were a fun exercise. [Smile]

Posted by Avadaru (Member # 3026) on :

Geez....eleven pups...Molly only had 5 and I'm still paying off vet bills over a year later. I honestly don't know what I would have done, had she whelped eleven puppies. [Eek!]

That is tough, making sure they all get enough nourishment at this point.

Good Luck!

Congrats, AJ (and Ciara, of course)! Good luck--that's a lot of puppies.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Let's just say I have to sell at least two pups in order to pay for the vet bill. From that perspective I'm glad there are ten. We made it through the night and they are still all alive and kicking. If we can make it through the first 48 hours things get easier.

AJ

*hugs*

I'd buy one if you were closer.

No, wait - I wouldn't, because I'm just not home enough now to be a good dog owner. [Frown] Oh well, maybe when my life settles down.

But congratulations, and here's hoping you pass that 48 hour hurdle!

I hope the puppies continue to do well.

Cindy, my handler, and Lazarus' real owner came here today to help me out. I really appreciated it. SHe was very good about identifying which puppies need the most supplementing and why. Now I know what to look for and know better what to do. Syringe feeding puppies is an artform that I am still learning. We are over 24 hours now and they are all still alive.

Well we are at 3 days and they are still all with us. Only two haven't put on weight. I need to be more aggressive with my supplementing, but I pretty much collapsed from exhaustion twice which is why they didn't get as much as they should have. Steve took over but didn't get quite as much down them.

Ciara accepted the puppies last night and is now licking them properly which is making my job a whole lot easier. I don't have to pee them every time I feed them. Still don't have pictures up. I'll probably have Steve take some more digicam shots today.

Hmm...my husband is going to be in Chi-town this weekend for CoffeeFest. I don't suppose he could stop by and see the pups real quick? I'd totally understand if you guys are still too frazzled for company, but since I can't be there myself, maybe I could settle for puppy-cuddles by proxy [Smile]

Stray he's welcome. Email me at bannaoj@yahoo.com if you are serious. However we don't live *in* Chicago proper. It is a little more effort to get out here. We are about 30 minutes (no traffic) to the northwest in Rolling Meadows. With traffic, it can be over an hour. I'd google it and see if it is feasible. We are fairly close to where I-90 and I-290 intersect.
