Okay, it's very cute that he feels he can just come on in. It's also a good thing since he lives several blocks from here, put his shoes on himself (we could tell 'cuz they were on the wrong feet), and walked here alone.
His mom was relieved.
I'm just glad we were still home. Although I bet he probably would've just sat down and watched a movie and played with the dog until someone found him.

I looked after two dogs for a summer (four months). One was a rather playful (albeit eight year old) Britney Spaniel. My mom was slightly allergic to her, so I would go over to their house, and play with them there, and I would also bring them into our backyard (their house was about two blocks from mine), and that was fine, as long as they didn't come in the house.
One afternoon, blacwolve was at my house, and the two dogs were in their own... and I guess Lucy managed to somehow get out of the gate in their backyard.
My little sister came into my room and said "Um, Lucy's outside the kitchen." I didn't believe her, of course, she was supposed to be safely inside her house. But blacwolve and I went downstairs and looked, and sure enough, she was walking around there, looking for us. Not only did she manage to get out, but she knew where my house was, and went looking for me.
Of course, she didn't bother to bring her leash with her, ( ), so blacwolve and I made a makeshift one out of string to take her home on, which promptly broke. So I had to basically run, holding her collar so she wouldn't run off.

We had a nice talk about not going out without telling Mom, a diaper change, and some pizza. Now we're going home, where Mom is working on child-proofing the doors.

I can't imagine walking 2 blocks in a diaper that needed changing. Ick. Imagine the chafing!

People in my family, especially women, don't end up in nursing homes. We go energetically until we are 95 or 100, and then we die peacefully in our sleep with no warning.

you have to have a harness for a four year old, with a dog you can use a slip lead.

We used to have a neighbor whose toddler and/or dog would randomly show up on my doorstep. We have a deadbolt that has to be unlocked with a key, or I KNOW one of my kids would do that

I'm relearing that with the 4-year-old mind, one doesn't so much suggest as align oneself with the cues (verbal, visual, or olfactory) that the child emits and do whatever is required as quickly as possible before the requirements change.
The diaper was obvious. The pizza was an initial "yes" response followed by finger-pointing-toward-mouth responses. You see, he's too polite to talk while he chews but he wanted more stuff in his mouth and he wanted it FAST!!!
He's a VERY cute kid, btw.
