send out prayers and thoughts, if you would, to a musical genius beyond compare, Vassar Clements, who is very ill.

"In the true tradition of all the great musical stylists, he has rejected the straitjacket of labeling. He performs with the depth of someone who has lived a lot, and as if he had been born prepared to play. His solos soar and glide gently over the rhythm in a manner reminiscent of saxophonist Lester Young's work with the great Count Basie Band decades ago."

I know him best for his work with "Old and in the Way," which is the sometimes-group with Jerry garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, and Vassar. It is actually probably my favorite group, ever. Now, with Jerry Garcia gone, they call themselves "Old and in the Gray."

Without Vassar? I don't know, that might be it. I sure hope he can beat this thing, but it seems that he might not.

Oh no!

Thanks for bumping, Elizabeth. He'll definitely be in my prayers. He's so brilliant and a truly good person - I really hope he pulls through.

Vassar is not going to make it, it looks like. The cancer has spread to his brain and spinal fluid. He has refused further treatment, and they are setting up hospice.

Very sad.
