10. I get to shush people who aren't my kids.

9. Reading a book while at work isn't slacking off, it's "book review."

8. I get to wear this shirt.

7. Even though the pay's not so good, I can always supplement my income by embezzling overdue fines.

6. My hair is the perfect length to be pulled up into a librarian bun.

5. I can inflict my favorite authors on the unsuspecting people. "You like romances? There's plenty of romance to be found in Ender's Game!"

4. Because books are just cool - and being surrounded by them makes me happy.

3. I can put one of these on my desk.

2. It's the perfect profession for someone with vast amounts of useless knowledge in their head.

1. I would have a perfectly legitimate reason to buy this.

What is the best cleaner for getting lipbalm off a computer screen? [Blushing]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Your husband will get allturned on if you wear the bun, combined with dorky glasses. (for some reason)

Ya know, I was wondering why Lucky was looking particularly stunning her first night in WenchCon. [Big Grin]

It's 'cause she's a hot, sexy wench. Duh. Plus, she spent a lot of time grinning sardonically at everyone.

Just don't claim that OSC said so, or you'll be in a heap of trouble.

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Well...yes.

And she was wearing glasses and had her hair in a ponytail.

Not quite a bun, but close enough. [Blushing]

Oh, I think the tight t-shirt may have had something to do with it, too. [Big Grin]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Does that librarian thing come from the old movies? I cannot tell you how many men have gotten all hot around the collar just thinking about certain women in bun and dorky glasses.

Hmmm. There was Sergeant Sarah in Guys and Dolls, too.

(sorry, Belle, i am sure this is not really why you want to be a librarian)

(or...is it?)

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

*snicker* Tight t-shirt? Hadn't noticed, not at all.

As for why...I honestly couldn't tell you. It's just "a look" and some guys like it, some don't. And it works on some women, not so much on others.

Someone suggested it plays on the first crush kids tend to develop on teachers, but I can't say that I've ever had a teacher that fit into the mold.

See, I always thought libraries were sexy. And that book smell! I am soooo jealous.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

Jenny, you could easily add on a library media certification to your teaching certificate, couldn't you?

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Wait until you start hitting the librarian jokes.

For some reason, a lot of them revolve around "the stacks." [Big Grin]

I did librarian work in 8th grade. I swear I'm through with it...

Hey, me too! [Smile]

yay for us!

Actually, I was a circulation worker during the first summer of grad work, come to think of it.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Its still boring though, ain't it?

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

I worked in the library in college. It was painfully boring.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Hmm. It was ok, I guess...peaceful, anyway.

It would've been better if the, uh, management had been nicer.

Gah. I'll forgo the war stories involving the GSU library system.

But you didn't work for em, though, right?

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Nah - I just got to listen to the police stories that never made it into the official blotter.

One of the perks of working the graveyard shift. [Big Grin]

I talked to a really cute (and nice) librarian at my school last week. Any tips on how I can ask her out?

No, I will not try:

You are overdue.... for a date.

You've been "checked out."

Can I catalog your number?

I have no trouble asking random strangers out on dates. But I do have one weakness: I cannot bring myself to ask people out while they are working. I always feel that it is somewhat inappropriate to bother people while they are at work. Sure, I can stick around the library until closing time and ask her out then, but that seems a bit stalkerish.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Well, you could just have her paged.

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Yeah, I'd recommend against waiting until the library closes.

It's not the same thing as trying to hit on, say, a waitress. Just wait until she has a moment of relative calm and ask her.

-Trevor

Edit: Elizabeth, I think you just topped my worst pun. Officially. [Big Grin]

Just a bit, hmm? [Wink]

If I were you, I would wait until the library is in no way busy, and then go up to her and say, "Listen, I don't want to bother you while you're working, but I think you're cute. Would you maybe be interested in going for coffee or something?"

Then again, I tend to prefer the most direct approach possible. [Big Grin]

"Edit: Elizabeth, I think you just topped my worst pun. Officially."

There are no bad puns, Trevor, just a Pun Smackdown Initiator who is focused on his upcoming nuptials.

*takes deep breath*

Thanks, Megan. I think I just needed that additional push. [Smile]

Of course, if the date doesn't work out, I'll be hanging around Borders a lot.

[Laugh] Liz.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Good on ya, Beren! Be bold! [Smile]

It may not work, but at least you'll have shown you're an upfront guy who puts all his cards on the table.

Mmmmm....sexy honesty... [Big Grin]

Posted by Beren One Hand (Member # 3403) on :

If nothing else, this should clear my library fines. If she likes me, fines magicall disappear! If she hates me, she would feel too awkward to ask for the money. Wooo hooo! [Big Grin]

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

*snicker* Yeah, right. Good luck with the honesty thing. [Big Grin]

Hey, it works for some people, and I bet a lot of people (read: women) here would agree with me. [Razz]

You're so cute, Beren. Frustrating, but cute. [Smile]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

And if you end up hating her, she will always have a reason to call you, because she can falsify your records, saying you owe money.

Megan, he goes from "being honest and upfront" to "she can make all my library fines magically disappear."

Which is why I was wishing him luck with "that honesty thing." [Razz]

Why? Do they have porn?

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

As a matter of fact, they do.

And they have a lot of books without a slightly perturbed librarian.

If the date goes badly.

-Trevor

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Or maybe he's just implying that he'll have to go to Borders to get books instead of going to the library because he'd be too embarassed to face the librarian.

Er, right. What Trevor said. [Big Grin]

I'm really offended that you think I would get porn at Borders. Everyone knows the internet is the place to get porn. [Wink]

*sings* Madam librah-ree-ahn!

What can I do, my dear, to make it clear?
I need you badly, badly, madam librarian

It's a long lost cause, I can never win
For the civilized world accepts as unforgivable sin
Any talking out loud with any librarian!

Belle, the Library Wench shirt is awesome.

Secret confession: I used to help out my school librarian by shelving books, and putting misshelved book back in the right order, and I loved doing that. [Smile]

I know a lot of you have talked about being bored in a library - but the field of library and information science is anything but boring now.

I read an article (which I can't find dagnabbit! [Wall Bash] ) not too long ago about medical librarians that actually went on rounds with doctors. They were specialists - one worked in emergency med, one in another section of the hospital, and they carried their laptops with them, and when the doctors were on rounds talking to patients and med students, they would be available to look up the latest information right there. In some cases actually pulled up information that helped the doctor make a diagnosis. Some doctors have even phoned medical libraries from the OR.

Yeah, I know I sound a recruitment video - but there is so much more to LIS than just books and shelving them and keeping collections. There is so much more going on, and it's a great time to be going into the field.

I would totally be thinking about doing this (with the aim of working in a university science or medical library) . . . if it paid better. [Frown] [Razz]

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Uh, being a university librarian pays pretty well (not overwhelmingly, but not bad, either). Ditto school librarian.

Its public librarian that pays atrociously.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

The difference between my current salary and the current salaries in my area for university librarians (at least those with less than 10-15 years experience) is not worth another two years of school (and that's full-time -- it would take me longer). At least not the last time I looked.

In high school our librarian was a rather large woman with a permanent scowl and a ruler used to keep order in the library.

She once kicked a teacher out of the library for talking to loud and disturbing her children.

When the advanced Shakespeare class had our annual "Shakespeare Dinner" we invited her and allowed her to be Queen Elizabeth. She got to use a fork.

Ahhh, Librarians are wonderful.

My mom has always wanted to be a librarian. She took a course on Library Science, and it was fascinating, but she was making good money in her field (accountant technician) and didn't have the moxie to make a switch this late in her life. I think she will become a library tech after she retires, though.

I love love love the smell of books. I love working at the Bookstore and helping people find good reading or research materials.

On post we have a tiiiiny underfunded library, but wonderful (wonderful!) librarians. In town (less than a mile from my house) there is a beautiful, spacious library with hateful mean librarians. One guess as to which library I go to.

[Smile]

People really do make the difference.

Rats! I killed the librarian thread!

*pout*

I don't think you need to have a legitimate reason to buy that Orlando Bloom poster. I mean, the legitimate reason for anyone who buys it is, of course, that it promotes reading. Right? Why else would anyone buy a nice, big poster of Orlando Bloom? [Wink]
