Are there any Dr. Who fans out there? I am surprised I have not heard more about Dr. Who on Hatrack. I had a very good friend who was the biggest Dr. Who fan in grade school and beyond. He would do well on Hatrack.
I have not watched Dr. Who much. I am not familiar with the story or the characters, however, I love the intro music. I also know a lot of actors have played the Good Doc.
Is this something I should look at more closely? Is anyone excited about the new series?

Edit: Yes, we get BBC. Don't know why, I guess it comes with the cable plan we have.

Oh Goodness, Little_Doctor. It's very good, well some are better than others.
It's an old (varies in age) British show, or rather a series of old British shows, with different 'incarnations' of the same character. It's kind of hard to explain.

I'm not familiar with the actor playing The Doctor this time around, so I can't really tell you whether this particular go-round will be worth watching. The series started in the early 60s--63, I think, but it could have been 64--and ran until 1989. The main character, The Doctor, is a rogue member of a race of beings called Time Lords. Time Lords have a dozen incarnations--when one incarnation dies the body undergoes a metamorphosis, after which a Time Lord will look quite different, and will have a somewhat different pesonality as well. Pretty good gimick for keeping a series around for 30 years or so without having to worry about keeping the same cast.
Like many people, my favorite Doctor was Tom Baker, who played the character in the late 70s.

I understand that some of the later doctors were kind of Tom Bakerish looking. I haven't actually seen any episodes later than the Peter Davidson era.

One of my friends was really into Dr. Who as a kid. It never really captured my imagination, though. And now, after Firefly, all other television SF just seems... well, lame.

You have to watch it for its historical charm!
(I mean, IF you watch it, you should keep in account its historical charm, not that you HAVE to watch it in order to appreciate it for its historical charm)

I was always a Quantum Leap fan. I want to enjoy a sci-fi show I have not appreciated. Firefly was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.
I did see an episode of Smallville, and I was pretty impressed. I actually rented the first disc of the first season. I like Lex.
However, right now I am into the BBC thing. I basically enjoyed Coupling--my bro has the first 3 or 4 seasons. I just finished The Office, which I think is the next best show after Firefly I have recently seen. I am looking forward to THGTTG. I might as well get initiated into the Dr. Who culture.

It can wait until the summer if you're really, really busy. But for reference, when I was in my final year of engineering school, I introduced two friends to the show, one at a time, and watched every episode with them. And yet, somehow, I not only passed but got the best grades I'd ever had.

But this isn't about that, it's about the new 'Doctor Who'. I'm not sure if there's a thread devoted to discussion- point me to it if there is- but I saw the first two episodes with my family last night and it was excellent. Opinions varied in my family, however; my father thought it was "too common" , which I guess would be a variation of the "too hip" comment from romany.
Although it is very 'hip', it's not atrociously so. It's a bit loopy and modern, but it's not putting-offing-ly hip. The Doctor may not look eccentric, but I assure you he is.
It's very good. It's exciting. It's funny. Christopher Eccleston is very good and very charismatic. It takes you from fear to laughter in a few seconds, to a moment of wonder and serious thought. It makes you think, and it makes fun of our world in a very well-handled way.
