My sister's CD player broke and she had to disassemble it to extract a CD. When she got it out, there was some kind of oil coating it.

Does anyone know the best way to clean the CD?

This one always works for me:

Coat the CD with toothpaste. I mean, a lot of toothpaste; a layer about 1/4 of an inch thick covering the whole CD. Get a damp rag and wipe off in a circular motion. Rinse rag. Then wipe again, this time sideways across the CD in one direction. At this point, it may be necessary to hold the CD under running water for a few seconds; don't be afraid to. Now wipe again with a damp cloth in a straight across motion, then dry with a clean, lintless cloth in the same manner.

Blockbuster has some really good cleaning solution, at least my local blockbusters (they're franchise, so it could be a local thing).

We used it internally all the time, it worked pretty consistently.

Internally as in at the business, on our DVDs, does no one use the word like that any more?

Spread peanut butter evenly over the surface that needs cleaning. Lay out for your cat or dog and stand back. Best to come back later and retrieve your CD. Might require a final wipe with a damp cloth but your CD should be very clean after this procedure.

Most CD Players have lenses on both the bottom and top. The bottom lens might just be tired and in need of a break. If I were you, I'd put the CD in the drive read-side-up. That's also a good way to see what's on the B-side of all those albums you buy.
