Unfortunately, I cannot share them - yet. For one thing, I've got to figure out where I want to post them, and how to get them there. We reformatted our computer last week and I lost my bookmarks and a bunch of programs downloaded from the Web.

I'm too tired to figure all this out right now - I tried posting one picture to my blog and had to download 2 programs but still wasn't able to do it.

Also, I believe I got at least one picture of every Hatracker there. Before I post photos for the non-attendees to see, I would like to know if there is anyone who objects to having their photo available to all the fine people who visit Hatrack. If anyone does object, then I will not post their photo online, just e-mail it to them (if they want it) and keep it for my scrapbook.

I'm going to bed now (Goodnight Hatrack).

I know, I'm an awful tease. But I've spent about the last 30 minutes or so trying to figure out how to get one simple photo online and it's just not working. I haven't installed the programs I used to use and the ones I did install just didn't work for me.

We had a blast! It was so great to have so many of our Hatrack friends there. You all are the best!

For those who couldn't make it, but wanted to, we love having you rooting for us and we hope to see you soon.

We're off to MSP and then on to London. If you want further updates, listen to BBC World Service. If we make the news, then either things have gone horribly, horribly wrong or the Queen has finally recognized dkw's brilliance and invited us to become subjects.

So I'm guessing it's okay with Bob and Dana if I post more Bob and Dana pix.

I think I may have to send the photos to foobonic - the problem is I think they need toning/lightening and my skills are incomplete.

Anyone who is a subject of my photos who objects to their photo being posted should speak now or ... whenever they see this. If I post something that becomes objectionable later, I will remove it.

Anyone who wants to help out by toning photos is welcome to volunteer. (shades eyes with hand and peers around)

CaySedai, go ahead and post the least bad pic of me.

Disclaimer: the picture is bad no because of any fault of CaySedai's but because the combination of low ambient lighting and flash photography kept forcing my eyes shut.

I wasn't drugged. Really!

I may be able to help you with your picture toning. If you want, send em over and I'll see what I can do.

kaioshin - there are 103 pix, but many are semi-duplicates. For example, I must have taken rivka's picture 5-6 times trying to get a good one. [Wink] No fault of subject, but low lighting as she said.

Since we both have gmail, I will send a few your way. Thanks for your help.

I guess this is a time where the "batch action" in photoshop will come in handy.

But you can post it.

Nathan got one of me at the reception when he stole my camera from me (*gasp*) and I had to chase him down and beat him up to get it back. The pic is of me about two seconds before I gave him a dead-arm.

mack - i was actually thinking about that this morning on the way to work -- thinking that you probably could NOT share the photos you took until after getting approval from Bob n Dana, since you were the "official" photographer and all.

Except for ones you took that weren't connected to the wedding and reception.

I mean - if they paid you to do the wedding, I would ask them first, if it were me. Let them have the chance to be the first ones to see their pics.

There are more photos, but I didn't want to make too much work for kai, plus some are "trying to get a better shot" duplicates.

edited to add: it's okay with me if others' photos are added to the BobnDanaCon album. I may start my own album later. [Wink]

And thanks to kaioshin for fixing my photos and ludosti for posting them.

It would probably be easier if you sent me the remaining pictures that you want put up (meaning all the pics minus the ones already there, the duplicates that don't need to go up, and the one that we're waiting on permission from one of the photoees before posting).

By the way, what kind of work was he doing to them? I have photoshop and can make some mods, if needed.

While its definitely good to ask them, I feel the copyright-geeky urge to point out that, unless such an obligation not to share is specified in the contract, jamie would be legally able to. She took the pictures, and not as work for hire.

Well, yeah - Russell. I wasn't saying "legalities" -- I was just pointing out that if I were the bride, I would assume I would get the see the photos from my official photographer before they ended up in a display window somewhere.

I hope that wasn't me ... I knew your name but find it hard to remember a specific thing anybody has posted, so if it was me, it wasn't personal.

I didn't know that you and Cor were a couple, so that was a good thing to learn. My little notebook with the list of Hatrackers who were going to be at the wedding has names with lines drawn to show who is a couple (some I already knew, like Jamie and Nathan and of course Bob and Dana).

Gah! Hold the phones!

I was making a light-hearted (and slightly hyperbolic) observation in response to Tater's confusion. No umbrage was taken, and no explanations are required, expected, or wanted. To be honest, there are lots of people that I would have a hard time recalling specific facts about.

But it really did get me to thinking, not for the first time, about the circles that we travel in. There is a specific grouping of thread topics that I do most of my reading and posting in (unlike some addicts who post in every thread! [Razz] ) and so it is possible for me to have a lot of posts and someone else to have a lot of posts and us hardly ever cross paths. (It took me a little while to figure out that Suneun and Suntranafs were two different people! [Embarrassed] ) And I think this phenomenon gets described every time there is some sort of flare-up as cliquishness, but it isn't so much, because it's not on purpose.

It was funny to me, and also thought-provoking, but I am certainly not offended.

[Smile]

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Cliqueshness doesn't have to be on purpose, you know. I think clique formation is pretty much inevitable when a group reaches a certain size and it becomes impossible to know "everybody."

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Okay, then my point is that I don't think its necessarily an evil, nor that it can be avoided. It's one of those things that happens quite naturally, and need not be based even on judgments of people's personality, but on whether or not we even have contact with each other.

Either way, though, don't you see why this is an intriguing topic?

Yes, that's true. And even the people who see it as an evil are a part of it. There is certainly a "paraiah" or "anti-clique" clique. Even better, I'll bet there's a "meta-anti-clique" clique whose members are aware that they're in a clique.

[Big Grin]

I can't possibly imagine who might be in that one.

Also, people drift between cliques and/or join multiple cliques. And then there's the secret liberal cabal...

Well, I certainly knew everyone by their username - and was finally able to put faces on the names: plaid, Xavier and Valentine014 (I think others I had either already met or seen photos of).

However, even among those of us who knew each other there was a lot of whispering of ("psst... what is Mama Squirrel's real name?" "what is Cor's real name?") That was kind of hilarious. Especially when it went down an entire row in the pew of us trying to remember Mama's real name. Everyone just calls her Mama.

Farmgirl

I blanked on Mama Squirrel's real name at the reception, so she must have gotten that a lot.

*nod*

I love to learn people's real names, but I can't always remember them.

I like to use people's real names on Hatrack also. I know I'm not the only one who does this, and I think it's cool when people know me well enough to know my real name.

But I don't know if everyone feels this way, or if it would be revealing too much information to call people by their real names here if they have not made those names obvious online.

So what are the ethics of calling people Connie, Amy, Liza (sp?), Mike, etc?

I've used my real name here before, as have several of my family members. I'm fine with you using it if you wish. [Smile] And you spelled it correctly.

Posted by Cor (Member # 4295) on :

Actually, this is a topic that Icarus and I have been debating a lot recently. My thought is that people pick their user names because they really like them. Often it is quirky or cute or has something specific to do with some aspect of the personality that the individual really likes. In my case, I'm not fond of my real name. I feel it is used too frequently. As one character in the novel "Tuck Everlasting" put it, it gets called so much that it's just worn out. And a lot of people share my first name. I much prefer a stronger sounding name like Cor. It is the name of one of my characters and she has characteristics that I would like to possess more of.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

That makes sense. I like Kat because it is my name, but no one except Hatrackers and ex-boyfriend from ages ago call(s/ed) me that.

Icarus, do you prefer Joe? I call you Icky because it makes me giggle a little bit every time.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Personally, I like calling people by their real names because it makes me feel closer to them. Knowing something personal like that lends a sense of intimacy.

Edit: Of course, if they prefer not to be called by their real names, I find that knowing that information has much the same effect.

I've grown to love my name, but I'm willing to bet that hardly any of you can pronounce it. Of course, almost none of my real life friends can pronounce it either, so it's not like that matters. I answer to any reasonable approximation. Or even to "Hey, stupid!" sometimes.

What are we betting? I'll have a chance to prove it in about two weeks. How many tries do I get?

[Razz] Take all the fun out of it. Besides, wouldn't you say it for anyone first? Or you'd just make them try to say it from the spelling? That would hardly be fair.

I might let them hear it once or twice. I suppose if you do manage to correctly pronounce it we can work something out. Positive reinforcement, right?

Dude, whatever. I can't even count how many variations on Sakasegawa I've heard. Heck, one of the companies that regularly sends me mail spells it "Jtwros."

Kat, I like both. I like Joe because, as Mike suggested, it lends a certain (nonromantic) intimacy: I feel known. I like Icky because it strikes me as affectionate, and it makes me feel liked. I'm sure saxy would agree. I also like the strangeness of having such a nickname as Icky. Sometimes people see it and wonder if it's an insult--knowing that it's not, I think it's kind of cool. [Smile] Then again, as Cor noted, I wouldn't have picked Icarus as an s/n if I didn't like it, so that's okay too--and I wouldn't want to encourage people to fake an intimacy or affection that they don't genuinely feel with me.

Nobody who's not latino pronounces my last name correctly. Cor comes closer than just about anyone. I have gotten into the habit of pronouncing it incorrectly when people ask me to pronounce it--I anglicize it because otherwise nobody could spell it or pronounce it at all.

I don't think my name is at all hard to spell. Only seven letters and it's spelled exactly like it sounds, but it's still misspelled more often than not.

One of my friends is named Daren, but the phone company liked to call him Darne. His last name is Toppin, but they thought it was Coppion.

[Dont Know]

We still call him Darne Coppion for laughs.

That's what I do, too, only I do it with my first name.

I figured out later that the word on the post it in our room (don't ask - I have no idea) was your last name when I saw the program for the wedding. Before, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to remember if it was Latin infinitive form of "anger."

I'll stick with Icky, then, if that's okay. It's very funny.

Precisely, twinky.

A while ago I realized I'd actually internalized the anglicized version of my name and it was how I thought of myself. That was a bit upsetting. I've been working on changing it but I'm not quite there yet.

Actually, yes. To be fair, they are addressed to Michael Sakasegawa and Juliette Jtwros.

For clarification, Juliette and I do have the same last name.

Further clarification: Juliette's maiden name is equally dissimilar from "Jtwros."

Twink, how DO you pronounce your name?

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

twink, I realized around ninth grade or so that I had done this too, and I went on a self-conscious ethnic kick. I also stopped anwering to "Joey" and insisted that people call me "José." Eventually (as in, after college, I think) I decided that "Joe" really suited my personality after all (or "Pepe" or "Pepito," but that's an entirely different issue).

It was only two or three years ago that I went back to anglicizing my last name (even when people specifically ask how the name is pronounced, because I interpret the question as being how they should pronounce it), but now it's only anglicized when talking to Americans. I no longer anglicize it in my own mind.

No dinosaurs. Mini posable man and bride.

There were going to be dinosaurs on the cake. If I recall, there is a picture of them dolled up for the wedding among CaySedai's pictures (on her blog, in fact, IIANM). However, as I recall, they were too big to actually fit there, so they went with poseable people and just had the dinosaurs somewhere else.

Back when I used to go to the Indian casino a lot, a lot of little old ladies had little charms like that in front of them while they played, for good luck. [Razz]

No -I never really saw it with the posable couple. Mainly because as Hatrackers, we waited around at the church quite awhile to get the group photo - so were like the last ones to show up at the reception and missed some of the action there. (I'm assuming they did the cake cutting, etc. before we got there? At least I never saw it)

What *is* the correct pronunciation? When I was in New Zealand, tt&t and I were speculating about it. Neither of us knows how the first "a" is supposed to come out.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

like the "ah" sound.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

it's kinda easy, cause Polish doesn't distinguish between long and short vowels. A Polish person would not hear the difference between "cat" and ... um... a word with an "ah" sound. The thing is not to put a diphtong in there, which he did.

Going back to the real names--I'm comfortable with people referring to me as "Amy" on Hatrack if they so desire. However, that's bound to lead to some confusion, since it's not used that frequently and those who haven't met me won't know who you're talking to.

Conversely, how does everyone feel about being referred to by their Hatrack name in face-to-face conversation? I still tend to think of most people by their Hatrack name rather than their real name, so it is easier for me to refer to people this way. Hearing myself called "Shigosei" out loud is always odd, but I don't mind that either.

My RL friends call me twinky on occasion. Not often, but sometimes. They also occasionally use 'RJ,' which I used to dislike, but now I'm not concerned about.

It weirds me out. I'd rather be called Abby. I dunno if I have Abby registered, tho... Hmm... Anyway, it's partly because my name is fake Japanese, and not everyone knows how to pronounce it with the correct fake Japanese accent.

Rye-oo-koh is fine with me, though. Still, I find it hard to answer to it.

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

I'm comfortable with any name as long as it isn't used in a derogatory fashion. I'll answer to: Darren, Punwit, Dagwood, Derwood, Big D, Undies(My last name is Underwood). I'm really not picky. If you can get my attention you can call me whatever you desire.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Now that we're home from BobnDanaCon, Ivygirl and I often have conversations about the trip, and I find that we constantly switch back-n-forth between referring to people by their screen names and their real names.

Except Amy. We both call her Amy. Because it is so much easier to say than Shigosei. And because that screenname wasn't exactly imprinted on my brain since I never figured out the proper way to say it.

If you don't get a lot of people pronouncing the vowels correctly, I reckon you probably get even fewer people pronouncing all of the consonants correctly.

The official was looking for the person in charge of the transportation...but when he asked for a Jose Orbe, he got about ten hands raised. Needless to say, we all know the response given when the official asked for the name of the dude in the coffin as well. [Big Grin]
