100 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #100: Lightning shaped scars are hot! [Razz]

(By way of explanation, sarcasticmuppet started a similar countdown-thread yesterday, but she was a day early (overly excited perhaps? [Wink] ). I thought about just using her thread as a conduit for the thread I was planning, but I thought that since my plan is slightly different it would be ok to start a new one.)

This is the idea: I will post a different reason to love Harry Potter with every day of the countdown. Feel free to add your own, but try to keep them for the same day of the countdown (ie. any reasons posted today would be under reason #100) so that the countdown can remain intact. [Smile]

#100

Harry Potter is the only children's book not dealing with potty-training, in which the author faces reality: there are bathrooms.

Hermione is really, really cool. I hope my kids will grow to emulate her dedication to dental hygiene, academics, and championing the rights of the oppressed.

Harry Potter has ruined my life. Since harry potter became popular, i haven't gone anywhere without someone telling me how much i look like him. For a while, when people asked me to sign stuff (thinking I was Daniel Radcliff) I signed for them. But it is a pain none the less. I would deeply like for the Harry Potter movies and books to end, so that I can on with my life.

Dude, I have the exact same problem! Don't be annoyed, enjoy it [Big Grin] Its been less of a problem since I gained some height and grew a beard. But freshman year, even before the movies even started coming out, people would come up to me all the time and say I looked exactly like they imagined Harry. I had the messy dark dark brown hair, glasses and everything. Its not a bad thing, its fun [Smile]

But if it really bugs you that much, just grow a beard, that'll solve the problem. After I did that people stopped telling me I looked like him [Razz]

97 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #97:

quote:
A breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which lay silent and tidy under the inky sky, the very last place you woud expect astonishing things to happen. Harry Potter rolled over inside his blankets without waking up. One small hand closed on the letter beside him and he slept on, not knowing he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken in a few hours' time by Mrs. Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles, nor that he would spend the next few weeks being prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley....He couldn't know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: "To Harry Potter--the boy who lived!"
Any series that begins like that has to rock! [Smile]

"Your sons flew that car to Harry's house and back last night!" Shouted Mrs. Weasley. "What have you got to say about that, eh?"

"Did you really?" said Mr. Weasley eagerly. "Did it go all right? I--I mean," he faltered as sparks flew from Mrs. Weasley's eyes, "that--that was very wrong, boys--very wrong indeed...."

What a great birthday present, Choobak! [Smile]

93 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (and Choobak's birthday [Wink] )! [Big Grin]

Reason #93: Early Ginny...

quote:
At that moment there was a diversion in the form of a small, red-headed figure in a long nightdress, who appeared in the kitchen, gave a small squeal, and ran out again.

"Ginny," said Ron in an undertone to Harry. "My sister. She's been talking about you all summer."

Reason #92: Dudley thinks he's all that...Harry actually is. [Razz]

quote:
"They stuff people's heads down the toilet the first day at Stonewall," he told Harry. "Want to come upstairs and practice?"

"No, thanks," said Harry. "The poor toilet's never had anything as horrible as your head down it--it might be sick." Then he ran, before Dudley could work out what he'd said.

Reason #91: Weasley Sweaters! [Big Grin]

quote:
"I think I know who that one's from," said Ron, turning a bit pink and pointing to a very lumpy parcel. "My mom. I told her you didn't expect any presents and--oh, no," he groaned, "She's made you a Weasley sweater."

Harry had torn open the parcel to find a thick, hand-knitted sweater in emerald green and a large box of homemade fudge.

"Every year she makes us a sweater," said Ron, unwrapping his own, "and mine's always maroon."

quote:

Neville backed away, his wand up, mouthing wordlessly. Snape was bearing down upon him, reaching inside his robes.

"R-r-riddikulus!" squeaked Neville.

There was a noise like a whip-crack. Snape stumbled. He was wearing a long, lace-trimmed dress and a towering hat topped with a moth-eaten vulture, and swinging a huge crimson handbag from his hand.

88 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #88: Hagrid, world's best Care of Magical Creatures teacher! [Smile]

quote:
The baby dragon flopped onto the table. It wasn't exactly pretty; Harry thought it looked like a crumpled, black umbrella. It's spiny wings were huge compared to its skinny jet body, it had a long snout with wide nostrils, the stubs of horns and bulging, orange eyes.

It sneezed. A couple of sparks flew out of its snout.

"Isn't he beautiful?" Hagrid murmured. He reached out a hand to stroke the dragon's head. It snapped at his fingers, showing pointed fangs.

"Bless him, look, he knows his mommy!" said Hagrid.

...They walked all the way back to the mouth of the pipe. Gilderoy Lockhart was sitting there, humming placidly to himself.

"His memory's gone," said Ron. "The Memory Charm backfired. Hit him instead of us. Hasn't got a clue who he is, or where he is, or who we are. I told him to come and wait here. He's a danger to himself."

#85 - The Hogwarts School Song

Hogwarts, Hogwarts,
Hoggy, Warty, Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
Teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn till our brains all rot.

quote:
"Wizards have banks?"

"Just the one. Gringotts. Run by goblins."

Harry dropped the bit of sausage he was holding.

"Goblins?"

"Yeah--so yeh'd be mad ter try an' rob it, I'll tell yeh that. Never mess with goblins, Harry. Gringotts is the safest place in the world fer anything yeh want ter keep safe--'cept maybe Hogwarts."

81 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #81: Early Neville (his "brave stand" against the trio) [Smile]

quote:
"You can't go out," said Neville, "you'll be caught again. Gryffindor will be in even more trouble."

"You don't understand," said Harry, "this is important."

But Neville was clearly steeling himself to do something desperate.

"I won't let you do it," he said, hurrying to stand in front of the portrait hole. "I'll--I'll fight you!"

80 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #80: Argus Filch...disgusting and terrible, but Hogwarts wouldn't be complete without him! [Razz]

quote:
"He did it, he did it!" Filch spat, his pouchy face purpling. "You saw what he wrote on the wall! He found--in my office--he knows I'm a--I'm a--" Filch's face worked horribly. "He knows I'm a Squib!" he finished.

(I was a little late with yesterday's reason, but Hatrack was down the first time I tried to post it.)

Reason #79: The Dueling Club

quote:
"Scared?" muttered Malfoy, so that Lockhart couldn't hear him.

"You wish," said Harry out of the corner of his mouth.

Reason #78: Harry's recruitment to the Gryffindor Quidditch team by Professor McGonagall. [Smile]

quote:
DO NOT OPEN THE PARCEL AT THE TABLE.
It contains your new Nimbus Two Thousand, but I don't want everybody knowing you've got a broomstick or they'll all want one. Oliver Wood will meet you tonight on the Quidditch field at seven o'clock for your first training session.

quote:
About once a week, Uncle Vernon looked over the top of his newspaper and shouted that Harry needed a haircut. Harry must have had more haircuts than the rest of the boys in his class put together, but it made no difference, his hair simply grew that way--all over the place.

57 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #57: Dumbledore's abundant wisdom

quote:
"The sorting hat placed you in Gryffindor. You know why that was. Think."

"It only put me in Gryffindor," said Harry in a defeated voice, "because I asked not to go in Slytherin...."

"Exactly," said Dumbledore, beaming once more. "Which makes you very different from Tom Riddle. It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

"Vernon Dursley speaking."

Harry, who happened to be in the room at the time, froze as he heard Ron's voice answer.

"HELLO? HELLO? CAN YOU HEAR ME? I--WANT--TO--TALK--TO--HARRY--POTTER!"

Ron was yelling so loudly that Uncle Vernon jumped and held the receiver a foot away from his ear, staring at it with an expression of mingled fury and alarm.

"WHO IS THIS?" he roared in the direction of the mouthpiece. "WHO ARE YOU?"

"RON--WEASELY!" Ron bellowed back, as though he and Uncle Vernon were speaking from opposite ends of a football field. "I'M--A-FRIEND--OF--HARRY'S--FROM--SCHOOL--"

"Blown up a toilet? We've never blown up a toilet."

"Great idea though, thanks, Mom."

...

"Hurry up!" their mother said, and the three boys clambered onto the train. They leaned out of the window for her to kiss them good-bye, and their younger sister began to cry.

"Don't, Ginny, we'll send you loads of owls"

"We'll send you a Hogwarts toilet seat."

Oh my gosh! You are so funny! Are you Emily and Amanda?

OK, first of all, I feel I must apologize for the fate of this thread. I went out of town fully intending to continue it while I was gone (I even packed two of my Harry Potter books!), but it just didn't happen. I was visiting my boyfriend before he left for Japan for the rest of the summer (internship). Anyway, I could have caught this thread up this week, but I was totally overwhelmed at the idea of doing it. A friend who reads my thread actually brought it to my attention just now, or I wouldn't have seen it at all.

Second of all, I love Hatrack.

54 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! [Big Grin]

Reason #54: Professor Trelawney's death omens

quote:
"I see," said Professor McGonagall, fixing Harry with her beady eyes. "Then you should know, Potter, that Sibyll Trelawney has predicted the death of one student a year since she arrived at this school. None of them has died yet. Seeing death omens is her favorite way of greeting a new class. If it were not for the fact that I never speak ill of my colleagues--"

Professor McGonagall broke off, and they saw that her nostrils had gone white.

I watched PoA last night, and noticed something. When Lupine turns into the werewolf, Snape instantly pushes the children behind him protectively. He does it again a minute later.

I like that they didn't take the cartoonish route and make everything about Snape less than admirable. I wish they had done the same with Malfoy. But that little scene made me like the movie even more.

[Big Grin]

OK, Rowling said the half Blood prince isn't Harry or Voldermort. And there is a clue to who he is in C.o.S. when Harry goes in the chamber.

The only thing down there is Harry, Tom Riddle, Ginny, the Basilisk, a bunch of columns and a giant statue:
quote:
Harry had to crane his neck to look up into the giant face above: It was ancient and monkeyish, with long, thin beard that fell almost to the bottom of the wizard's robe
So what does this mean? Is the statue of Slytherin. If so does that make him the HBP?

Are there any other nerds out there who have thoughts on the matter?

Posted by Liaison (Member # 6873) on :

Carver, I think that when Rowling is referring to a clue in 'Chamber' it doesn't necessarily mean IN the actual chamber. I believe it means the clue is somewhere within the entire book.

Reason #27:
quote:
Indeed, a week after Fred and George's departure Harry witnessed Professor McGonagall walking right past Peeves, who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier, and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth, "it unscrews the other way."

The link between Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince relates to a discovery Harry made in 'Chamber' that foreshadows something that he finds out in 'Prince'.
It didn't say that someone/thing in the chamber IS the prince
