What foods are good for speeding up the 'healing process' of broken bones? Should I be going with protein-ey foods for growth, or calcium-ey foods for bone... strengthening... properties... (?!) or something else?

Yes but it was 3 weeks ago - I've been good since then! I'm just trying to convince myself that by willing myself better, I'll heal faster? Then I thought I should get some nutritional advice to help me on my way.

Any ideas? I thought chocolate was a good one - That's got protein in it, hasn't it? And calcium. [Smile]

Seriously leafy, green vegetables have lots of calcium in a readily absorbable form. So broccoli and spinach are what I would suggest, since they're the two I like. I suppose leaf lettuce would work too. If your tastes are different than mine, you might enjoy brussel sprouts, swiss chard, maybe asparagus. In general the less cooking, the better they are for you. In my opinion the better tasting for most of it too.

When I broke my wrist last year I found mulled wine and hot chocolate helped considerably.

Of course, I was on a ski-field with a broken wrist and not much else to do *but* drink mulled wine and hot chocolate!

Oh, and eat french cheese. Lots of it.

Thanks ofr all the advise - I like spinach and broccoli so that's not a problem. Wouldn't touch sprouts with a barge pole! Same for asparagus.

Mulled wine and hot chocolate? How about a pint of beer too? [Razz]

What does French cheese do?

Also, should I be moving my arm as much as possible, or as little as possible? (Really should have asked this at hospital but I just couldn't wait to get out of there!)

French cheese - nothing I know of.

But I did have a broken wrist on a skifield in France, so...

It was goood cheese.

Oh - don't try to actively move your arm too much.

The cast should protect the break and everyday movements are ok. But I wouldn't start weight-lifting or anything.

Depending on how bad the break is you may need to get some exercises from a physio when the cast comes off to get the muscle back in action.

It's not in a cast, though - I dislocated my elbow and fractured the lower part of my arm. They couldn't put it in a cast until they reset my elbow but they couldn't do that until my bone had healed! So they wrapped it up, put it in a sling and said that it might heal itself. Tomorrow, they're going to see if the bone's strong enough to put my elbow back, and if it is, then I won't need a cast anyway.

Yum! I like cheese!

I think I'm just being impatient - I just want to start strengthening it up now, but I guess I shouldn't try anything till it's properly fixed up. But an excess of painkillers has made me a bit dopey so it's hard to tell what makes sense and what's complete rubbish in my head!
