Soon I will be rejoining the ranks of the unemployed. IM is moving jobs to India and/or the Phillipines, or as they told us 'a lower cost geography'. At least I won't be canned until late July.

My Dad was a mechanical engineer at Carrier's Syracuse, NY plant. Then they moved to Korea, and after 28 years of solid employement, he was out of a job.
Now I know this is more of a national problem, but Tick, if its at all possible get out of upstate New York! That place is sinking fast. Moving to a city that is actually growing as opposed to shriveling up and dying is a breath of fresh air, let me tell ya.

The DC area is faring pretty well as far as tech jobs are concerned. The biggest drawback is the price of living-- especially real-estate.

Here's a handy website to help you figure out cost of living differences between where you are and where a job is that you might find. You know, to see if it's feesible.
What surprises me is the fact that Buffalo seems pretty economical. I mean, it is slightly more expensive to live in St. Louis ($94 more a year, at $50,000/year) than in Buffalo. Slightly less in Kansas City (you'd need to make $47,200 in KC to match the $50,000 in Buffalo.)

That's awful.
I wish more profitable companies would take the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to cost-cutting. If you're making money, don't risk screwing things up by making further big cuts...

Actually, I read a story that mentioned a number of companies were leaving India because:
The thick Indian accent was difficult for customers to understand. (You were expecting a Yonkers accent, maybe?)
The high turnover rate which left hastily trained and ill-experienced staffers to service customers

San Diego seems to have a pretty vibrant tech sector, but unfortunately it's really expensive around here.

That is really what killed me after I thought about it. Every month we have a meeting where they tell us how good we are doing, this is how much better we are compared to our competitors, blah blah blah. Having felt the cold knife of corporate cutting at my last job, I really thought this place was different. I was wrong.

I hate to be the cynical one again, but I've yet to see a company willing to be honest with the rank-and-file if only because they don't want to upset the apple cart and have employees engaging in motivated acts of malice or suddenly jumping ship en masse.
Mind you, not jumping ship until the management is ready for it.
Enlightened self-interest just doesn't work - I remember the Delta execs voting to give themselves raises and benefits while asking other employees to approve cuts in their respective positions.

Actually, your present employer is very nice, extremely ethical compared to most employers. You are getting 3to4 months notice of a layoff -- 3to4 months to job hunt -- whereas corporate downsizing advisors and standard management texts recommend keeping employees in the dark until the last possible moment.

Oh, I realize that, aspectre. My last job let us go after we got GUARANTEES that we would have new jobs despite all the turmoil. I know that they are going through all the motions of being helpful, but it still sucks.
