Soon I will be rejoining the ranks of the unemployed. IM is moving jobs to India and/or the Phillipines, or as they told us 'a lower cost geography'. At least I won't be canned until late July.

Man. Sorry to hear that Tick. At least you've got a little lead time in finding something else. Good luck.

Ouch.

Damn, that just sucks.

Sorry Tick.

Thanks. It's just frustrating...We were finally to a point where I felt like we were making 'enough', you know? Not behind on bills, putting a little away in savings, and then this.

We geeky hatrackers should start a consulting company distributed around the US . . .

Bummer. I hope you find something even better. Good luck.

My Dad was a mechanical engineer at Carrier's Syracuse, NY plant. Then they moved to Korea, and after 28 years of solid employement, he was out of a job.

Now I know this is more of a national problem, but Tick, if its at all possible get out of upstate New York! That place is sinking fast. Moving to a city that is actually growing as opposed to shriveling up and dying is a breath of fresh air, let me tell ya.

Man, that sucks. Hopefully something will come up.

The DC area is faring pretty well as far as tech jobs are concerned. The biggest drawback is the price of living-- especially real-estate.

Bummer, Tick. I hope you find something soon.

There goes our capital.

That really sucks.

Here's a handy website to help you figure out cost of living differences between where you are and where a job is that you might find. You know, to see if it's feesible.

What surprises me is the fact that Buffalo seems pretty economical. I mean, it is slightly more expensive to live in St. Louis ($94 more a year, at $50,000/year) than in Buffalo. Slightly less in Kansas City (you'd need to make $47,200 in KC to match the $50,000 in Buffalo.)

Here's a small list of what you'd need to make in some other cities, based on $50,000 in Buffalo.

$48,622 in Phoenix AZ
$70,966.63 in Oakland CA (ouch, don't move there)
$69,031.4 in San Diego CA
$83,807.27 in San Francisco CA
$51,737.76 in Denver CO
$61,038.7 in Hartford CT
$49,057.07 in Gainesville FL
$55,262.64 in Miami-Dade County FL
$48,158.57 in Atlanta GA
$76,797 in Honolulu HI
$63,225.71 in Chicago IL (ouch again)
$47,487.16 in South Bend IN
$49,012.64 in Ames IA
$44,974.33 in Louisville KY
$67,594.79 in Boston MA
$43,695.7 in Tupelo MS
$45,137.24 in Omaha NE
$50,572.67 in Albuquerque NM
$107,163.31 in New York (Manhattan)(yowser bob)
$67,500.99 in New York (Queens) NY
$45,522.31 in Winston-Salem NC
$50,760.27 in Cleveland OH
$45,927.13 in Tulsa OK
$59,621.84 in Philadelphia PA
$44,752.17 in Memphis TN
$47,763.63 in Dallas TX
$49,718.6 in Richmond VA

I wonder if companies will start realizing that outsourcing stuff like Tech support to India is really BAD for customers. Guess they don't really think about that when the allmighty dollar sign hangs above them.

That's awful. [Frown]

I wish more profitable companies would take the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to cost-cutting. If you're making money, don't risk screwing things up by making further big cuts...

Actually, I read a story that mentioned a number of companies were leaving India because:

  1. The thick Indian accent was difficult for customers to understand. (You were expecting a Yonkers accent, maybe?)
  2. The high turnover rate which left hastily trained and ill-experienced staffers to service customers

San Diego seems to have a pretty vibrant tech sector, but unfortunately it's really expensive around here.

Sorry to hear your news, dude. If I do hear of any jobs I'll be sure to let you know.

That is really what killed me after I thought about it. Every month we have a meeting where they tell us how good we are doing, this is how much better we are compared to our competitors, blah blah blah. Having felt the cold knife of corporate cutting at my last job, I really thought this place was different. I was wrong.

I hate to be the cynical one again, but I've yet to see a company willing to be honest with the rank-and-file if only because they don't want to upset the apple cart and have employees engaging in motivated acts of malice or suddenly jumping ship en masse.

Mind you, not jumping ship until the management is ready for it.

Enlightened self-interest just doesn't work - I remember the Delta execs voting to give themselves raises and benefits while asking other employees to approve cuts in their respective positions. [Grumble]

-Trevor

Edit: And they wonder why employee loyalty is a thing of the past.

Sounds like a plan. When do we start?

No idea, who wants to write the business plan?

Actually, your present employer is very nice, extremely ethical compared to most employers.
You are getting 3to4 months notice of a layoff -- 3to4 months to job hunt -- whereas corporate downsizing advisors and standard management texts recommend keeping employees in the dark until the last possible moment.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Oh, I realize that, aspectre. My last job let us go after we got GUARANTEES that we would have new jobs despite all the turmoil. [Roll Eyes] I know that they are going through all the motions of being helpful, but it still sucks.

We need a business plan? I thought we were just going to... you know... consult. [Razz]

Accck! No! Runs screaming away from IT consulting.

Although if I'd gotten on the managing board for VLR I was going to try to throw some work your way, fugu.

Heheheheheheh . . . Dag may be a little put off of consulting [Wink]

Thanks for the thought, btw [Smile]
