I was wondering how much information you guys might have on this symphany. I am looking to find out reasons why he wrote it and some of the circumstances that lead to his writing of it. How some of the Social and Political factors might have effected the writing and production. The people that were ivolved with the production or influenced it. Any elements of the piece you can give tips on. Also if you have any resourses that you have for websites or books. I am mostly looking for information on the first and second movements.

I'd feel much more willing (well, maybe not, but at least not so irritated) if they just came right out and *said* "I've got this homework assignment and I don't even know where to start."
When it's posed like this, or as it is in Sid Meier's Taiwan vs China thread, it just feels like they're trying to pull one over on us.

Where have you looked? Have you been to your local library? This sounds suspiciously like a "do my research for me" type request. It took me about ten secons to find the wikipedia article.
You should go to your local library; if you're at school, your school library. There will be a book on Beethoven and it might help you with your project. I'm pretty sure there are some excellent websties out there, too.

Well, just to get started:
Some interesting stuff about the famous opening:
Ask 10 musicians exactly who plays in the famous opening bars and you'll often get 10 different answers. I've heard everything from Tutti to Tympani and lots in between.
(The answer: Strings and Clarinets)
Then, there is the tidbit of the 4th and 5th measures: why not just put a fermata on the 4th measure like he does in the 2nd measure? Does Beethoven mean for the fermata to last exactly as long in the 2nd measure as in the 5th measure with the addition of an additional beat? Or is there some other reason? Lots of different interpretations on that one.

The premiere of the 5th was part of a rather gargantuan concert that included:
5th Symphony 6th Symphony (Pastoral) 4th Piano Concerto an Aria and 2 excerpts from the Mass in C a Piano improvisation by Beethoven The Choral Fantasy
They probably needed to serve dinner and breakfast after all that...jeesh..

It's also his first symphony to use Ondes Martenot, Moog Organ and Theremin. Make sure you put that in your report.

One other historical tidbit: It was originally composed as a soundtrack to Yojimbo. But when Kurosawa turned it down for not sounding Japanese enough, Beethoven cut it up into these things he called "movements" and released it as an album on the Death Row label. It was Beethoven's first platinum hit, thanks in part to its constant MTV exposure.

I actually had to check for a minute and make sure I didn't register an alter-ego and sleep post. I'm in music appreciation this semester and Beethoven's Fifth is one of our listening examples that we have to write up.

This is about the time where he was realizing that he was going deaf.I have heard that the main theme that starts the 1st movement is supposed to be fate knocking on the door.
