BACK!!

Um... played once, did ok, wind blows, shoulder hurt for a week. It was fun, and I'd probably play again if the opportunity arose.

I played as a kid. The course was in VA Beach in a wooded area. Way too many trees made for a tough course.

There's a disc-golf course at Codorus State Park a mile or two away from my house and I've been trying to hook up with a co-worker to play there. (Been trying for the past 8 months - minus the 4 months when it was too cold. We both have busy lives, apparently.)

When I came back from college, I discovered that they built a frisbee golf course in the park where I loved to lurk during college. [Grumble]

I think Frisbee is trademarked by Wham-O or something. And the disks we used were far heavier (and smaller) than a standard Frisbee. Easier to control, but harder on the arms.

Ahh, a trademark thing. I just know that the city set up a frisbee golf course. Our frisbees are heavier than regular ones, too. I just didn't know we weren't allowed to call them frisbees.

I used to play a lot with friends. One roommate wanted to play almost every day, he was a little obsessed with it.

There are several courses in Atlanta.

Anecdotes, hmmm
One guy we played with randomly when we ran into him on the courses was extremely good, he always had monster drives and much more accurate putts. But he was cool, didn't rub it in and was fun to play with.

One day, the local paper ran a story on disc golf. Our friend was featured prominently in the article, as he was ranked #3 in the world in disc golf standings! And he never said anything to us. [Cool]

No wonder he beat us like rented mules.

Lately, I haven't had anybody to play with. I tried to play once last year, but it's no fun alone. [Frown]

Yeah there's at least three courses within a fifteen minutes drive from me (in Michigan). I borrow my brother's driver and putter all the time to play, whenever friends will get off their lazy butts and play too.

And yes, sadly, there are special discs for driving and "putting" in frisbee golf.

My cousin plays, all the time. Every weekend. That's where his friends are. That's where his loyalty is. I'm afraid I'm against all disk gold as a result.

There's one course that is nearby, and one a little farther away. I play every now and again, but I don't know anyone here who plays, so I'm solo. It's very hilly and forested for much of the course. And I'm good enough that I haven't lost any discs yet, though that's about the best I can say about my skills.

The problem with this particular course, is that nearly all holes are on hillsides which slope down to the right, and being lefthanded myself, that means when I don't throw the disc perfectly, it always slices off (you guessed it) to the right. Which basically means I get a LOT of exercise running over the hills after my discs.

We call it frisbee golf here, too. Dan likes it quite a lot. I like it when we go with my cousin and her husband, because that means the guys can play and my cousin and I can walk and talk and entertain the baby.

I played some disc golf today at Skidmore. That was a lot of fun, though I lost pretty solidly. I don't have much of an arm, it either goes far, but way off target, or it goes short and on target. So I was kinda screwed either way. I could take lots of short throws and be on target, or risk longer ones. Of course, all of my throws fell way short of everyone elses. It was still a lot of fun though [Smile]

Is that kinda like Ultimate Frisbee? I have two second cousins once removed who played Ultimate Frisbee in college.

No, Ultimate is similar to soccer--you have two teams, you pass the frisbee around until someone scores a goal by catching a frisbee past the goal line. And you have to stop running when you catch it.

Frisbee or disc golf is close to real golf--you drive with a long distance disc, then move up and shoot from there, with the same disc or a shorter range or putter disc. The goal is the same as in regular golf: to get from the tee to the "hole" in the fewest shots. The hole is actually a basket with chains to stop flying frisbees on regular courses, or a pole or tree or something else on made up courses. Most courses have 18 holes, some small ones have 9.

Best of all--it's usually FREE, except for tournaments. [Big Grin]

I love disc golf, we play in Minnesota when there isn't enough snow to cover the whole course(we call this time of the year "not winter").

Ancedote-
Playing with my older brother on a hill that slopes downwards and the pin(the place where you try and put the frisbee to be done with the hole) is about 120 yards or so down hill from us. Next to it, going up the other side of this hill is the next hole and a walking path on the very edge of that.
My brother throws the frisbee, it gets grabbed by the wind and carried across our hole and to the next.
Guy is walking his dog down the path, frisbee hits the dog, bounces off of him, hits the guy, and then flies into the pond thats next to the path. Talk about bad luck for all involved! Luckily no one was hurt but boy was my brother's face red as we were all laughing to hard to help him!
