I love to read aloud to my friends, and even more to be read to. It doesn't matter what. I will be rapt and spellbound by the sound of anyone reading to me. Recently I listened over and over to a recording of BunnV reading a few paragraphs out of his biochemistry textbook.

To me it's totally not something that is just for kids. I sometimes record stories for my friends and family and email them out, but my secret (don't tell anyone) motive is that I'm hoping they'll record stuff to send to me.

I guess I'm just really weird or something. Nobody else seems to enjoy it like I do. Sooooo.... I'm taking it to the highways and byways.

Is there anyone else who would like to record themselves reading something they love and swap? (I hate my voice, btw, but this activity is so fun (and I've had so much practice reading to kids) that I lost some of my shyness about it.)

Or maybe you have a dread textbook reading assignment that might be made more palatable by sharing?

I have a free program I downloaded that allows me to record for long periods of time, and at a lower bandwidth selected for voice, so that the resulting filesize isn't too huge. I will be glad to send anyone a copy of it.

The current club list:
And much much more! See the yahoo groups database here for a complete listing.
How about it? Any takers? Email me at annekateard AT bham DOT rr DOT com to send or request stories.

This sounds fun! I read aloud to my daughter every night. It really wouldn't be too difficult to record our sessions on a tape recorder or something. However, we've already started "The Secret Garden", so you'll have to wait until we're through with that.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

I record mine on computer, for easy emailing. Do you have a way to transfer from tape to computer?

I've also been looking for the cheapest and most convenient portable recorder that will put things in mp3 format. (Or if there's a quick way to convert from whatever format it records to mp3 that would also work.) Can anyone tell me the best way to go? What's the state of art in dictation machines these days, for instance?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

MP3's not so hot a format for voice, I suggest Ogg Speex: http://us.speex.org/

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Russell, why not?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I'd love to do it, although I don't really have any equipment.

I think this is a great idea. We spent about a year recording us reading the New Testament together as a family when I was fourteen or so. I think it was supposed to be a gift for my grandpa, but we never finished it. I have all the tapes now, and I think they are the only recordings of my mother's voice. I haven't listened to them yet, but I love that I have them.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Its just badly inefficient. Something like Speex will result in a significantly smaller file size.

Of course, its harder to share a Speex file around as fewer people will be able to deal with it. A low bitrate mp3 should be adequate enough.

As for a converter, most any music program out there should be able to convert from many formats to mp3, and if not there are tons of specialized pieces of software doing the same.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

The recorder I downloaded has a way to make 1 kilobyte/second mp3 voice recordings that seem easy to understand. That's what I use. Would ogg be better?

For equipment, all you need is a microphone and a computer, kat.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

If that is kilobyte per second and not kilobit per second, then speex can get it down to 2 kilobit per second (about a fourth of your size).

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Okay, thanks! Yes, it's kilobyte, sorry, I fixed it. I guess where that would come in handy is reading long things. So far the longest thing I've done is White Nights for Sasha, which is about an hour total, but I broke it up into four segments. The idea is to make each one a nice length for a bedtime story.

I'm willing to use whatever format others want, but I have this recorder software if anyone needs it, that can do mp3s at 1 kB/sec.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

mp3 will definitely be the best for sharing.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Jenny Gardener, The Secret Garden rocks! I totally would love to get a recording of you reading this, even if it's only parts of it. No need to make it complete. After all, the book is there if I want to remember the rest of the story.

Obscure things or dry technical things are not excluded, either. Anything at all that someone wants to read or has to read I'm interested in. What I found it did with Sasha was provide motivation for me to read again something I loved but hadn't read in years. And I'm so glad I did. I had forgotten how much I loved that story.

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Dostoevsky's "White Nights" or some other story?

I used to read for the blind. Scholarly linguistics papers. That was a trip. Sometimes I think I might like to record some motivational books on tape for my husband so he can listen to them in the car. I listened to the book of Mormon on tape for a while once and it was a really different experience. Most people have probably experienced that more, but I found it very interesting.

Sure, Miro! Do you have a microphone on your computer? If so then that's all you need. I will be glad to send you this software and tell you how to set it up for 1kB/sec recording.

Pooka, yeah the story I read for Sasha was White Nights. If he seems to like that and requests more then I'll pick some others, maybe Tolstoy's Death of Ivan Ilych or else Family Happiness. My favorite Dostoyevsky short story is called The Little Hero, and I read it in an old collection at my university's library. It's been out of print for a long time now, though. I wish I could find a copy of that story. I'd definitely read it to him.

Heh, Miro, there's tons of recording software for macs, don't worry. If you have iLife, use Garageband, its great (add a voice instrument track, press the record button, record as desired, edit as desired).

Well, there seem to be a lot of links here, I'd just need to know what would work well with our computer.

We've got a 2.7 Ghz processor, 256 MB of RAM, running Win XP (stupid system). Any recommendations?

I'm running XP on a Celeron with 96Mb ram and this one works fine on mine. I installed it, configured it for 1kB/sec mp3, chose a filename, and hit record. It was pretty easy.

It's called "All Sound Recorder" but I think the newer versions have time limitations. I've got an older version with no time limit, if you would like it.

And most decent headphones don't have a microphone installed, Hobbes, they focus on being headphones [Razz] . Certain kinds of headphones include a microphone, yes, but hardly most.

Try looking for a mic on most Grado or Sennheiser (or the like) headphones.

Okay, I'll just post instructions here, in case anyone else ends up using this same software. The file I sent is an exe file, so just double click on it to install it.

Once it's installed, you can configure it for 1kB/sec mp3 like this:
Run the program, then click on the little folder icon at the bottom left.
You get a "select format" dialogue box.
From the "format" drop down, pick "MPEG-Layer 3".
From the "attributes" drop down, pick "16kBit/s 12,000 Hz Mono 1kb/sec".
Click the "Save As" button and give this configuration a name.... I called mine "mp3 voice". Then click OK.
Next it will pop up a box for the file name. Drill down to wherever you want to keep these stories, and type in the name of the story you're reading in the filename box. Click Save.
Thereafter, click on the little triangle to start recording. Speak into the microphone.
Click on the box to stop recording. Listen to your recording using Real Player or Windows Media Player or WinAmp or any sound playing software like that.
You can also pause your recording at any point by clicking on the pause button (the two vertical lines).
Record a short test first to make sure it's working, before you spend a long time reading in a story.
Next time you record, you can skip the configure step and just choose "mp3 voice" or whatever you called it, from the drop down list in the select format screen.

I was listening to "Unaccompanied Sonata" this weekend, just on audiobook, and I was amazed at what details came out to me that I didn't pick up when I read it (which I did for the first time just a few weeks ago). I think that is because even with fiction I "scan" a bit. We read at different speed and depth when we read silently, depending on the interest level of the passage.

In particular, the back story on both Joe and Guillermo didn't stand out when I read it- I just wanted the narrative to get back to Christian- but since the audio book reads every word at more or less the same speed I suppose I gave them equal attention.

If not, could someone review some of the options for me? I have no idea what would work well...but I do know free is a good thing at this point.... [Big Grin]

Kwea, I think any program that outputs mp3 files will be fine. This one just happens to be handy. Configure any program for relatively low bandwidth and sampling rate and you should get reasonably sized files.

12,000 Hz bandwidth is plenty for voice recordings (telephones use 5,000 Hz I think). My recordings have an annoying high pitched computer whirr that I wish I could filter out, in fact. This software isn't sophistocated enough to do that, to do band pass filtering, so there's plenty of room for improvement by computer (or audio) wizards like our friend Russell.

I tried the lower sampling rate that would generate files half the size, but it sounded fuzzier and less understandable, so 1 kb/sec seemed to be a good choice. You can experiment a bit with different settings in any software you may try, to compare sound quality and file size and pick something you like.

Or if you'd rather, I'll send you this software and you can configure it just like mine. But there's no special reason for everyone to do that. Mine is not particularly wonderful and there may be many better things out there. I may be persuaded to change to something else myself, in fact, after listening to stories recorded by other people. I'm really impressed by how Russell's sounds, for instance. Mine are quite amateurish by comparison. [Smile]

I would recommend Audacity, a freeware program that seems to be as good as most commercial programs. Recording a voice was very, very easy to do, and best of all it isn't shareware, it's freeware.

I have played around with it a bit, but the sound quality seems to be very good.

Now, I guess I need to set up my web space with Verizon...I have DSL, so I think I got free space with it, but I don;t have a site even set up.... [Big Grin]

We will see....

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Played around with it a bit, and it is incredible. It is easy to use for our purposes, but it has so many other professional grade features that I am really impressed.

And did I mention it is freeware, not shareware?

I am having a problem with Audacity...although the problem isn't with the program, it is with my lack of knowledge about computers in general, I think.

In order to save these voice files with Audacity as mp3 files, I have to install LAM, which is a program/library that Audacity uses to convert it's files to mp 3's. I went to the link and downloaded it, and clicked on the exe. file, and something happens, but then when I try to save the files as an mp3. Audacity can't find the LAME catalog.

Weird.

OK, I figured it out, and now they items I read are in MP3 format. Now I just have to figure out how to send them to people, as I don't have a web site to post them on yet. I think I have the space, as a Verizon DSL customer, but I have not set it up, and have never done anything like that before. It would probably be easier to email it to people, providing I can figure out how to do that.

I believe I can just send it as an attachment, right? I have never tried to send an mp3 before, so I have no idea...

Hobbes: there's no hard and fast limit as to what's okay and what's not, but I don't see any way a couple of pages (in this setting) wouldn't be a fair use, particularly as your use is transformative of the work you're copying.

Megan: asimov's estate is a ferocious copyright defender, so you couldn't post links to them on the forum.

Oh, and Kwea: File are files, you can just attach MP3s like any other file. The only reason you wouldn't be able to attach some file in exactly the same way is if your ISP had some particular restrictions on what sorts of attached files could be sent, which is best tested by a trial run.

I made some mp3's today, but even though the titles are all different in the file I put them in, when I go to play them as mp3's windows reads them as the first one I ddi. They play fine, each individualy, but the title is the same on all of them.

I went under properties of each, and they are all named the same in that, although the names of the individual files in the folder show up fine.

What did I do? Or rather, what didn't I do?

Do you think we get into copyright violations if we just email them one by one, person to person? That's what I was planning to do, but if that's illegal or wrong then I won't. I'll limit myself to stuff in the public domain.

However, much of what I want to read will have a copyright if not on the original work then on the particular English translation. So I will be sad. But since I've gotten zero requests so far for my readings, the point may be moot anyway. [Big Grin]

Kwea, what have you got so far for me? What story/book or other text are you reading?

Russell, your public clamours for chapter 2!

ketchupqueen, did the microphone come yet?

Jenny Gardener, what chapter are we on in The Secret Garden? I'll read the book to catch up to wherever you are.

I'd like to undertake a really long work, one chapter at a time, perhaps Lord of the Rings, or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or maybe Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, or Anna Karenina, possibly Heidi, but only if anyone is interested in hearing it. Anyone care to listen to one of those novels that I love passionately? I will work on improving my reading voice, and I'm sure I'll gain in confidence and ability the more we do this.

Nope. Shipped Mon., could be here as early as tomorrow or as late as next Mon. I am looking forward to reading, though; I think the first thing I will do is "The Cat that Walked By Himself", my favorite Just-So Story. After that, I am trying to decide whether to do my favorite Sherlock tale, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", or my father's favorite, the very readable "A Scandal in Bohemia". [Big Grin]

Is Poe OK yet? I think so, and I might read some of his soon. The Pit and the Pendulum, or The Fall of the House of Usher....

Either that of some of Shakespere's sonnets...I always felt they were much better read out loud than they scanned on a page.

And yes, Shakespeare's sonnets, while good on paper, are much more impressive out loud. I impressed the Relief Society at a "getting to know you" event by reciting no. 116 (the famous "Let me not to the marriage of true minds...") when the question was "Who can recite a poem from memory?" I can't believe that mine was the only hand that went up, and that was the first one that popped into my head. [Big Grin] It's much more impressive out loud. In fact, maybe I'll do that, too.

Hobbes, what program are you using to record this? It sounds good, but there is a lot of white noise..I know that Audacity has an EQ ability, and filters....

Oh Hobbes, your voice is awesome! It's just like I heard it in my head! Have we ever spoken on the phone? I don't think so yet I seemed to recognize your voice. I love this reading! Thanks so much for it! Please do more. The earphones sound fine as a microphone to me. I just had to turn up the volume loud to hear it but I didn't hear any static, really, at all.

And Kwea, yours are very impressive! I enjoyed listening to them so much! Audacity definitely makes great quality recordings. I may change over to it to get my recording quality better, and so I can filter out that computer sound from mine.

Twinky, I will send you the Pooh story that Grisha loves best, okay? It's from Winnie the Pooh, in which Panda and Roo come to the Forest and Piglet gets a Bath.

I began making a web site using Verizons' web kit....it will be a pretty basic site, but it will do for now.

Unfortunatly, Verizon is down tonight, perventing me from uploading mp3's to my site tonight. At least I think it is because of that....

I went to upload this to my site and it won't do it...at first it sadi that all teh file names were invalid, because I had spaces between the words. Upon reading the board a bit I found that it said to modify the names of the files on the upload screen to remove the spaces..so I put underscores where teh spaces had been, and they appeared to be working fine. I got the list of uploads populated, then began to hit the "choose" button, as prompted by Verizon....and none of them would upload, even though it had accepted them with the underscores.

I hope I wasn't suppose to go through teh file on the computer and rename them as well, because it didn't say anything about that in the web directions.

[Dont Know]

All of this is completely new to me, so I will have to figure it out later, I guess.

Hobbes, I forgot you were using your headphones as a mic...that being considered, it wasn't bad. You have a very good voice for this stuff...even if you DO steal my ideas for reading material..... [Big Grin]

Still, I know that Audacity can filter out some noises, it is under tools I think...I played around with the EQ function as well, so perhaps that might help as well.

Thanks, ak...I wrote tehm a while ago, as I mentioned in the email I sent you. I tried to wrote poetry while I was in school, but never finished even one to my satisfaction...but a few years later, out of the blue, I had a bunch of ideas all at once, and wrote them down.

I have a poem I wrote for a friend who died as well, and I really like that one as well. His parents had part of it carved into the headstone too, so I guess it was fairly good.

The only copy I have of it is at my parents house, so when I go down there this weekend perhaps I will record it as well. If I can figure out the web space as well I will post it there.

At least I won't have any copyright issues, as I own them lock, stock, and barrel... [Big Grin]

Kwea, do you want me to list your readings individually in the catalog on the zeroth post? Or just to group them together and call them "readings"?

I won't send them directly myself but will let anyone who wants them ask you for them directly.

And for my readings too, I would appreciate it if people didn't share them directly to others, but let them always come through me. Shall we make that the general rule?

Kwea, I just saw that you requested something from me. Which would you like? Or if you want to wait I will soon be recording more stuff.

I think that that works, only sending things that you yourself have recorded, that way there aren't any confusiong problems about where they originated.

Sure, list mine there, wherever it is....either individualy, or in a folder called Original Poems, then sublisted...whatever works for you, I don't care.

Now, you mentioned a list of existing recordings? Where?

I am open for suggestions...send me whatever you think you did best, or you enjoyed reading the most.

BTW... Welcome back, AK ! I missed you.
EDIT : Another idea that just came to my mind : I'm currently in job research, and will probably spend considerably less time near my compy if it succeeds. Does anyone know if something like a digital recorder exists ? You know, something that would have a battery, that I could have with me to record things and plug to my compy to have the records back...

Yes, they do..either portable MP3 recording machines, or even just a portable tape player, digital or otherwise. You could always convert the recordings to a mp3 file on your computer before sending it.

Anna, I too would love to hear you read in English, accents are awesome! I would love to hear you read in French too, even though I wouldn't understand it.

One of my favorite reading aloud memories is a time when I was reading and being read to in Spanish. I hope someday Sasha will read Crime and Punishment to me in Russian and translate it for me line by line and word by word. That might sound tedious to some but for me it would be heaven! And maybe I could learn Russian that way.

Thanks for the latest round of readings, everyone! I'm all busy this weekend because BunnV and Grisha are home for a bit, (last night I read to them the Stinky Cheese Man) but they're leaving on Monday (too soon!) and then I want to listen to all the latest plus I promise I'll record some more myself. Hobbes, I like "The Raven", although the volume is very low.

Hobbes, I have an idea for you until you get a mic....

Are you using Audacity now? thought you were, based on your comments about using the on the last recording, although it might have been another program I suppose...

If you are, there is an option for "noise removal" that seems to be tailor made for your sound issues, although it might not help much with the volume. You click on that option, under Effect, and it ways to run it while the sound is playing for a little bit so it can detect the sound and filter it out. If you did that, then didn't make a sound, it might filter out the white noise, allowing us to hear your cool voice better.

Then again it might not...I have a fair mic, and have no problems, so I haven't tried that effect myself other than to play around with it a little bit. It might work, it might not, but it seems it might be worth a shot.

I enjoyed hearing you read though.....

Send me anything and everything, people...I may nto be able to listen to it all, but I have DSL so I can download it no problem and save it until later.

I had two other sonnets recorded but they weren't saved properly so I lost them. I will record them again this weekend, and send them out.

My mom had a birthday while she was out in AZ, and since she is now home Jenni and I are going to see her (and my dad) this weekend. As a belated birthday gift I am taking along a audio CD of these poems, and some others than Jenni and I are recording for her, so that she can always hear our voices when she wants to. She is just enough of a sap that it will be a great gift for her...

And I am just enough of a sap to think of doing it for her....

ElJay, I believe that fugu said it was OK to read most works, as it is a "transformative" use within the public domain. We can't post them here, probably, but we should be able to send it to each ohter, as we are not profiting by doing so...it is considered "fair use", I think.

Then again I sell suits and mortgages for a living (although NOT at the same time or place... [Big Grin] ), so what do I know....

OK, here is the linky to Audacity for anyone who wants it, once again. I really like this app, it seems to work really well, although it is a bit overpowered for simple voice recording. Then again, it's free, so who cares? [Big Grin]

AK, I will take the piglet one first, pls....and The Gift of teh Magi, too, from fugu.

Also, please add my selections to the first post....I see that is what you meant now... [Big Grin]

Anyone want to hear some truly mediocre original poetry? It is my specialty, sort of...

I am very grumpy at UPS. They said they were going to deliver between 2 and 5 today, so I was up, here, and ready-- and they didn't come. I opened the door-- and there was a note saying they missed me! It must have been in the narrow window between 11:45, when Jeff left, and 12:20, when I got up. And this is the worst part-- they left it in the office. The office hours are supposed to be until 5:30, so I woke the baby and ran down to catch her at 5:15. No one there. Locked. [Mad] Saturday hours are by appointment only; I will have to have my husband try to catch her tomorrow morning. [Grumble]

Yes, I don't think that worked at all. They're all tiny "cda" files.

Hm.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

CDA files aren't music files, they're pointers to the music files on a CD.

What sizes are the files you tried to send, kwea?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I am ripping them from the CD now, and will resend them in about 5 min....sorry about that, this is all sort of new to me. I don't know why sending them from teh disk wa a problem, since window media player reads them fine off the disk in the first place.... [Smile]

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Heh, if they were on an audio cd they weren't mp3 files. Also, WMP was following the CDA links to the actual music, but when you copied the CDA files, all Teshi got were the pointers to the music (which is still on the CD), not the actual music.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I figured that out before I even posted that, minus the actual compuspeak, but I still found it a bit odd.

I rippped the tracks to the my music folder, and tehn attached a copy of the files (wma this time) to an email...too bad it took so long that hotmail booted me and I lost the whole daamn thing after spending 30 min uploading it. I HATE not being at home on my own computer, this one has had all sorts of problems that even the tech people at Comcast weren't able to solve.

Plus, it is set up different than mine, so I have to relearn where everything is on this one, and dumb stuff like what happened above occurs while I do so.

I sent Teshi half the files this time, and CC myself...and they played from hotmail, so it should work ok this time.

Anyone else want copies of any of it while I am at it? I have all the work I have done so far, plus JenniK reading her two favorite poems...The Colussus, and She Walks in Beauty....

And when are we going to have the a cappella singing thread, twinky?

I'll set us up a yahoo group. Then everyone can upload their files and we can download whatever we want of them. Sound good?

KQ, are you using Audacity? If you are, the space key is pause, and you can edit too, so if you get interrupted you can just pause, then pick up where you left off and cut out the mistake/interruption after itis all recorded.

I messed up a few times but I just stopped, and reread the part, then cut out the mistake.

When one wishes to verbosely express one's feelings on a subject, Mrs. Queen, one must sometimes fit more in a sentence than that sentence can otherwise adequately carry. It is the bane of the high-spoken, that they must carry such heavy lines with them; but it is one lightened by the knowledge that you will always be on the look-out, so to recognize our burden as to the weight of such a load.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Annie: import them into iTunes (I have it set so garageband does that automatically), select the track, go to the Advanced menu, and choose Convert Selection to MP3. If it doesn't say MP3, go into the application Preferences, Importing, and choose the MP3 Encoder and Good Quality, then use Convert Selection.

Nevermind - I answered my own question.

In iTunes, you can simply control-click on the song and choose "convert to mp3."

This does not, in case you're wondering, work on m4ps. You still have to burn and then re-rip those.

But as of yesterday I don't think anything was actually hosted on Yahoo....

So, I now have the English translation of the first bit of my French nonsense done too. I'm in the midst of emailing it all to Hobbes so he can upload it for me.

Last night, I amused my sister by reading her some of the funnier chapters from my novel. I recorded three of them, but only one was still there in the morning (the other two files "couldn't find" my voice track [Dont Know] ). So, for now, I have chapter 15, and will re-do some of the other chapters if there's interest.

My question for you is- do you like funny or serious?

I like funny. But that's just me. (You may notice that several of my contributions are humorous. [Wink] )

Oh, I see why it didn't go. My ISP is objecting to the filesize, sheesh! It's only about 20 MB. <grumbles>

I'll try breaking it up into two groups under 10 and see if that makes them happy.

OK, mine are in the database as URLs. I don't know if Hobbes has had time yet to upload them, but at least that's the address they will be at.

Dragon, sending you White Nights now. We will see if it alone is too big to send in one message. It's around 13Mb.

The last line actually goes like this, "Isn't such a moment sufficient for the whole of a man's life?" I don't think I said it right cause my eyes were so blurred that I couldn't read it properly.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Hobbes, dear, perhaps it will take a few minutes since it's so big. It hasn't come back to me or anything. Do you still not have it?

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

"The Man Who Counted" is awesome! I particularly love it, twinky, when you laugh. I want more! The hotel one was pretty straight interpolation. I wasn't so amazed by that solution as the Wazir was. [Smile] But all of them are just great. Who wrote this story and when? The flavor of the culture that comes through is wonderful, as are the individual puzzles.

Okay, Annie, that passage from the novel was wonderful! It reminds me of Jane Austen. How cruel of her, though, to do that. Did you not think?

Hobbes, the jokes are great. I laughed out loud about the snakes.

How do I get copies of the stuff that's linked in the database? If I can listen to it I should be able to download it, right? Can someone tell me the trick? If it's an actual link I can right click and choose "Save Target As", but if it's just a URL listed and I put it in my browser address line, I get to a quicktime slider thingy that lets me listen but I don't know how to make a copy from that point. I'm sure I'm just being dense, but can anyone tell me how to do that? I want to save them to my own hard drive so they don't go away when people graduate or change servers or whatever.

I'm trying to catch up, so just now responding to stuff that happened days ago... but I remember now talking to you on the phone Hobbes! That would explain, I guess, why your voice sounded just like I imagined it would. [Smile]

Hobbes, Gravity's Rainbow is too quiet for me to hear. I can almost catch most of it but not quite enough to be able to follow. Is there any way to get a bit more volume? I've got mine pegged on this end.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

I'll see what I can do about Gravity's Rainbow, but probably not, right now I've got a bad sore throat and I can only whisper.

I still haven't recieved your files. [Frown] Gmail can handle 10MB

Oooh, take good care of that throat. I sent two messages each < 10 Mb this evening to your gmail account and they've not been returned or anything. Would you like me to try to resend? I've just added the first four chapters of The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. I have a suggestion if it's not too late. Could we add a field for running time in the Yahoo database? I can see that being very useful for those who are deciding which they want to hear. This latest one runs 15:11.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Okay, if it doesn't show up in a little while then we'll try again with the files one by one, devoting a single message to each segment.

Silly email servers!

Annie, I love Fraternite, especially the French version. Your french sounds wonderful, and I love listening to things in a language I don't understand. It gives it a mysterious quality, you pick up words here and there, and the essence flitters around you. Perhaps I will read my favorite storybook in Spanish, when I'm done with The Little Prince. [Smile]

ak, it was written in 1972. By a Brazilian, actually, under a pen name. But it's set in the middle east in the middle ages. [Smile]

I'll try to read some more of it this weekend.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Oh, wow, that's so cool! It sounds very authentic. I was sure it was written by someone in Baghdad in the 6th c. or something. [Smile]

I've now available the next installment of The Little Prince (chapters 5-9, running time 16:34). This edition was given to me by Grisha, by the way, and it's the original translation into English, which I vastly prefer to the more recent one which is all that is currently in print. He found it for me in a used bookshop. It was such an awesome present!

Perhaps someone who can read French will read the original for us. That would be so great!

I'm practicing Le Petit Prince. My French diction is rusty. I'll need to read over the segments a few times before I'll be able to record a passable version.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Oh, I adore the Little Prince! When I get some ansible time, I'll request it from you, Tatiana. [Smile] Did you see the opera version of it? It was on PBS a couple weeks ago. My 8 and 10 year old sisters even sat through it, and that's saying a lot for an opera. [Smile]

And that particular passage of my novel is the only one that's pretty much totally fictional, if that makes you feel better about the cruelty. Though, it is something those two people would totally do.

I have chapters 2 and 3 of Fraternite done, but still need to send them and also translate them.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

I didn't see the opera version. What did you think of it? For me the book is absolutely perfect, a wonderful jewel of light, and I can't imagine any other version of it coming close. But as an introduction for those who have yet to discover the book, I suppose any other form would work.

I would love to hear it read in French. I have it in Spanish but it's far too hard for me. My Spanish is not good.

The book I want to read in Spanish is La Verdadera Historia de los Tres Cerditos, the true story of the three little pigs by S. Lobo, the wolf. It's hilarious and way better in Spanish than in English, I think. The wolf seems so Latin to me. I can't believe he's an English-speaking wolf at all, I was astonished when I found out the book was originally written in English.

I took a break from recording,as it seemed that half the readings on the first page were mine, but I will probably record some more later this week, if I have time. I just started a new job, part-time, and it is really taking off so I am a little short on time these days.

Not that I am complaining. [Big Grin]

I listened to the first part of AK's Pooh's story yesterday night, and I totally loved it ! You read wonderfuly, AK. I'm going to enjoy listening to the following deeply !
I love Tom Davidson's Small gods too, but some times he reads a little too fast for me to understand everything at first listening - I guess it'll help me to better my listened comprehension.
I also listened to KQ and Ketchup Prince Consort, it's great.
Special mention for Annie : I listened to the beginning of the French version of Fraternity, and your French is nearly perfect ! I didn't know the text, and it's definitively a great choice. Very easy to understand, and yet very profound.
My projects so far : Record the Little Prince in French, and go on Harry Potter.
I love being part of this club !

I'm glad you like Pooh. The goodness is all in the story, though. I apologize for my voice but like Hobbes said it's the only one I have available to me at the moment. [Smile] Grisha keeps requesting more Pooh so I will keep recording them.

I'm having so much fun listening to everything everyone's sent! It's great to have a bedtime story to listen to nearly every night! I finally got around to all the poetry ones, Kwea and ketchupqueen, and they are great. Reading poetry is much harder than prose, isn't it? I don't think I can manage it.

I, too, am having to listen to Tom twice to get all that's going on. I think it's probably because the book itself is quite clever and subtle. I've never read Terry Pratchett, but from this clip he seems extremely funny and good.

Anna, I'm really excited about you reading more of Harry Potter, and Le Petit Prince too. Your audience eagerly awaits them (at least this portion of it does).

No, you can do it! There's a simple rule: take care of the sense, and the meter will take care of itself. The point is not to emphasise the meter of the poem; that's the poet's job. The point is to read the words of the poem, with feeling, like you would prose, and the meter and rhyme will come out despite you, but the emphasis will be in the right places. [Smile]

Test to see how the yahoo database will copy and paste to hatrack. It seems like a barrier to require someone to join the group if they only want to peruse the available stuff. So I thought it might be cool to copy the listing here from time to time, depending on how difficult that might turn out to be. [Smile]

It actually turns out to be pretty easy using notepad. I just copied and pasted each page of the database listing from Yahoo, then did a search and replace on "Edit Delete", (that has 2 spaces between Edit and Delete), and replaced it with the ubb code for "list item" which is an asterisk between square brackets. I copied and pasted this into the Hatrack message window, adding the List Start and List End codes, as well as a list item code for the first item, to finish the job.

Does anyone object to this? Should I disguise the email addresses better to thwart web crawler bots? I could do that fairly easily, in fact! <goes off to do it>. All I did was search and replace <space AT space> for <@> and then again <space DOT space com> for <.com>.

Oops, I messed up Russell's link that way! <fixes> Oooh, and Tom's too! <fixes that as well>.

With that done will this be pleasing to everyone? Please let me know what you guys think. I don't want to overstep. Thanks!

Two readings from the Book of Mormon join our library today.

I read from first Nephi chapter 8, in which Nephi tells us of the dream or vision which was granted to his father Lehi of the Tree of Life.

And then I read from third Nephi chapter 17, in which Christ appears to the Nephites after his resurrection, and prays for them and blesses their children.

I've added both to our Yahoo Groups Database. If anyone would like to hear them, please email me for a copy. [Smile]

This is the first time I've seen this thread but it sounds awesome, guys! Add me to the number of people who love to read out loud and listen to others as well. My husband, unfortunately, does not. I didn't know that when we were courting. We read out loud the entire Chronicles of Narnia to each other on our dates, instead of going to movies (we're broke - that's what I get for going for a missionary [Big Grin] ). Then, about two months after we were married, he says "You know, reading out loud doesn't do anything for me." And he won't do it ever since. Sigh.
