I'm somewhat disturbed. When you Google my username, it brings up my profile for Hatrack and my e-mail as shown at Virtual Battle School. I mean all it brings up, for me at least, are posts that I've done here. Does this happen for others? I don't think I'm fond of the idea that people I don't know might find out my e-mail address, I mean other than Hatrackers because we're like a big family.

For me, most of the results are for a forum that I'm active on... But there are a lot of results in these weird sites that I barely even know.

Click on "my profile".

Click on "View/Update Profile".

Scroll down and choose an option other than "Yes, keep my address visible to anyone."

Save your profile with the update profile button.

I don't like it. Can I complain and have them take those off the results or something?

Edit: I think I fixed it. Let me check.

Edit of the Edit: But now it isn't visible in my profile, how will Hatrackers e-mail me if need be?

Do you use the same username other places? If not you probably don't need to worry.

Oh wow, it brings up my first hatrack post over a year ago, plus some others that i actually consider important.

edit to add: I think many hatrackers will click on the email icon above a post if they need to email you.

They can ask?

They'll just ask you for your email. Then you can post a modified version of it so that no bots would pick it up, like "my_name _AT_ domain _DOT_ com" and that's it.

Uh, you did notice the second option? The one that lets people email you through the board software?

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

fugu, IIRC that option wasn't working back when I signed up. I don't know if they fixed it in the meantime though...

You know, when I was first doing this several years ago, I noticed that when I displayed my e-mail, that SPAM increased dramatically. Then I removed it and it slowed considerably.

There are text bots out there scouting e-mail addresses?

I should have known. [Wink]

Steve, who exactly do you think will be Googling your username and why? I don't think you really have anything to worry about. If people are looking for Captian America stuff, they're going to use a space, or if they don't, they're not going to be too interested in finding your posts and e-mail address, they're just going to skip over it and keep looking for whatever they were looking for. If they know you from a forum and are looking for you, well, then, they found you. No big deal either way.

I can find mine unless I put "hayrack" next to my screen name.

If I really needed you for some dire emergency I'd start a thread entitled: CAPTAINAMERICA COME QUICK OR, IF YOU CAN'T COME QUICK, SEND AN EMAIL TO THE ADDRESS IN MY PROFILE SO I CAN SEND YOU ONE!!!!! [Wink]

Steve, in the event that someone needed to email you and you have yours hidden they can just do a mayfly thread. It's not a huge problem and if you are hesitant to have your address public then keep it hidden and folks will let you know if they need your addy.
