As a lot of people know, Diane and I have been working pretty much nonstop since mid-January or so. You can tell because:

a. My postings have dropped way off.
b. When I do post, I whine about how much I work.

We do it because we think of it as necessary work. You don't think about awards and stuff like that.

A few weeks ago, we got an email from the president of the Arc of Illinois (Arc = "assoc. for retarded citizens" but has shortened its name.)

As part of the yearly conference, they were giving us the President's Award.

It happened last night. One for each of us with our names on it.

It reads:
quote:
For your tireless commitment and outstanding advocacy to ensure meaningful support, access to medical care, and legal safeguards for the rights of all people with disabilities endangered by non-voluntary euthanasia in the United States.
I'm not usually an outwardly emotional person - last night that probably wasn't true. A lot of what I learned about being an advocate and a human being occurred during the ten years or so that I worked in the field of disabilities as a teachers aide, group home counselor and in day treatment centers.

Getting thanks from this group of people means a lot, even if I think the praise is heaped a little too richly. Still, if I could pick a group to be honored by, this would be it.

Thanks for being patient and tolerating a little self-indulgence on my part.

Congratulations. [Smile] I would like to say that you have really broadened my understanding and emapathy as a non-disabled citizen, and I appreciate it. (((hugs)))

Now, are you going to get a good night's rest to celebrate?

Sweet! You deserve every bit of the praise.

By the way, my 8-year-old sister was watching Jim Lehrer with me when you were on and when it gave your name and title - Not Dead Yet - she looked at me, very concerned. "Is he going to die?!"

I think the key word on the award was "tireless".

Congratz!!

[Blushing]

to everyone.

And, yeah, going to bed early and getting a good night's sleep is definitely on the agenda. I definitely went short on sleep on sleep last night. Again.

I received an award a few years ago from a national group for media work and it's on a shelf in the corner, facing the wrong way. It was nice to get it, but the one I got last night is different.

This is going up on the wall. [Smile]

It's funny how if you just see a thread title sometimes you won't want to click it if you didn't know who started it, but if you see it with who started it you want to click it. (I first saw the thread title looking through someone's post history, by way of explanation.) Okay, that's supposed to be a really convoluted compliment.
