Old English has nothing to do with it. That phrase refers to the form of the language before the Norman Invasion. It is also called Anglo-Saxon.

Old English looks like this:

(Opening lines of Beowulf.)

The form of English that uses structures like "desirest thou" is in fact Modern English. It's just an archaic pronoun and verb conjugation within it.

I've been waiting for this thread! I'm reading Othello in school, and the definitions they give you for some of the words are even less "slang" than the original.
