I noticed that we had a blowfish and a mushroom going back and forth in the evolution thread, and it got me thinking about different ways of categorizing screen names here.

Cyanide Cuisine: based on foods that can be poisonous (ok, portabellos aren't poisonous, but some mushrooms are) - fugu13, Portabello.

Non-poisonous Noshes: ketchupqueen, twinky.

The Forthright Few: screen names based on the posters' real names - TomDavidson, Chris Bridges, Sara Sasse, Orson Scott Card, Bob_Scopatz, and, to a lesser extent, Scott R, rivka, dkw, katharina.

Occupational Oligarch: based on the poster's occupation - Architraz Warden, UofUlawguy.

Anti-Occupational Oligarch: Bob the Lawyer, Bean Counter, King of Men.

Fantasy/Sci-Fi Character Names: Beren One Hand, vwiggen, Steve Rogers

I could go on, but it's more fun to see what you can come up with.

Dagonee

The name Dagonee always reminds me of a dragon...
so you could be under the Fantasy category. [Smile]

Who's Steve Rogers? Is he a character in a Sci-fi book/movie?

Fantasy: unicornwhisperer, Trogdor the Burninator, Unicorn <haven't seen her in years) Marlozahn

Dagonee reminds me of Dagonee from King Arthur.

Lyrhawn is the name of a general from a story series I write.

Posted by Little_Doctor (Member # 6635) on :

Steve Rogers was the name of Captain America's alter ego.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

There's a Dagonee in King Arthur? I had no idea. So far it only shows up as me on google.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Mine falls into none of the above, so far.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

The Pseudo-Forthright: names that seem to be real, but are either imaginary (or partly imaginary) or belong to someone other than the poster -- T_Smith, Dan_Raven, Belle, Ela, Ralphie.

I'm honored. I'd like to accept this award on behalf of all those who can't accept rewards. Oh and, Steve Rogers was Captain America's alter ego or was Captain America, Steve Roger's alter ego? Steve was the one who was genetically altered to be invincible was he not? [Razz]

I don't fit into any of these yet either, but then again no one's suggested one that fits mine yet.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Assuming you are really a bookworm, I think you'd fall under Occupational. [Wink]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Oh, I forgot sndrake and Elizabeth in The Forthright Few. Which is the largest category so far, but still a minority on the board.

Names I Don't Try to Pronounce in my Head: Epictetus

So do I count as a "lesser extent forthright" since my handle is my initials? Or does it not count 'cause I didn't include the Double-Yew? (I only use it when being formal.)

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

For those who don't fit into a category, I've got the category for you:

Completely Random, yet Cool, Names

How is that?

Posted by Avadaru (Member # 3026) on :

I guess mine could be categorized under fantasy or character names...it's my gaming handle mostly, but I originally got it from one of those elvish name generators, and I though it was pretty. (it means "from the far cliffs"

(also fits in the Forthright Few category, I guess, b/c I could have just signed up for a new one once I realized my mistake)

By the way, many names will fit multiple categories. And many categories have yet to be named.

Add ketchupprincess to royalty.

Toys and Games: Litebrite and Superstation.

Animals: Papa Moose, Mama Squirrel, Mooselet, A Rat Named Dog, Puppy

Homestar-inspired: Trisha the Severe Hottie, Trogdor the Burninator

Somewhat loosely based on Comic books: SteveRogers and TheHumanTarget

Posted by Portabello (Member # 7710) on :

Perhaps there should be a larger category -- character names. This includes all sci-fi, fantasy, H*R, etc. characters.

Mayfly names: Names that are created for the purpose of a joke and have a post count of less than 5. Sadly, I can't remember any of these, but there's lots of them out there.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Mine was briefly a potential name for a character in one of my own unfinished stories.

Does that count as something somewhat interesting?

Posted by Brian J. Hill (Member # 5346) on :

I don't know, mb, are you on foobonic? I'm a pretty objective judge of babe-ness. [Big Grin]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Well, Brian, Mayfly would be a mayfly name.

Is Elizabeth forthright enough, or should it go into the royalty category?

Posted by Brian J. Hill (Member # 5346) on :

Yes, I totally forgot about that one. It most certainly meets the first criterion, but I'm not sure it's post count is low enough.

Nope, not on foobonic... and not really interested in being judged either.

Hi. [Wave] I'm a newbie. I know it appears that I took my name from SotG, but I'm a forthright few. Seeing my name (spelled the way I spell it) in SotG was a surprise for me. I've never come across a fictional character with my name before.

I would have preferred a more intelligent and perceptive character, but it was fun for me and I'm looking forward to the next book to see what happens with Randi and her baby.

Posted by Brian J. Hill (Member # 5346) on :

[derailment] mb, I was j/k--honestly. I'm not really all that into judging people based solely on physical appearance. That's why I'm not on foobonic, either. I'd rather people know me through what I post.

[/derailment]

Verily

Moose
Squirrel

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Verily, I think it's closer to "What are you writing" or something close to that. I don't know latin - I created it from an English-Latin dictionary. I wanted a login ID that would universally be mine rather than fighting with everyone else over the same names. And I'm a writer. [Dont Know] So far, I'm the only person around who's ever used quidscribis, near as I can tell.

Posted by Verily the Younger (Member # 6705) on :

Oh, okay. I thought maybe I had made a typo or something.

Then I was going to be cute and write "What did I write?" in Latin, but I've never learned past tense. So that kills that joke.

My name is pronounced eh-pic-tee-tus. At least that's how my philosophy teacher pronounced it. From what little I know about pronouncing Latin, it could also be pronounced Eh-peek-TAE-toos (tus)(capital letters indicate guessed emphasis.)

You can still avoid pronouncing my name in your heads if it's still confusing.

Any stoic philosophers out there or anyone who speaks Latin feel free to correct me. I'd love to know how to pronounce my name too. [Big Grin]

You know, if we could encourage new members to adopt for their usernames articles, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs, then eventually we could have game threads where we can make up entire sentences like "The quidscribis jumped over the Black Fox" by using Hatrack usernames.

So come on, new members! If you grab such popular words as "the," "and," "said," and "onanism," you'll get to see your name all the time!

EDIT : derail :

Actually, I find it annoying to find my name all the time, because when I'm searching for a thread and type "Anna" I have like a zillion thread with "Do you wanna" or similar.

I never did read that "is my screen name too fanboyish?" thread. But I think "characters or made up words from a OSC book" counts. Though I found the phrase "mother tree" in the Book of Mormon the other day. Also, "pooka" was a dead pet name.
