If someone were to have “fixed” hail damage by painting their house but not scraping or sanding or anything first (wooden siding) how soon might the whole thing have to be re-done?

If the house was painted without any sort of prep I would guesstimate that you would have to repaint in less than 5 years. Normal house paint lifespan is usually around 7 years. If the house was dirty and or chalky as well as being hail damaged you might only get a year or two before paint integrity begins to fail.

Edit to add that that was the short answer. If you need more in-depth info I'd be glad to provide it if I can. Without seeing the house and its current condition I can't answer unequivocally but I could give you more precise reasoning about why adhesion may fail if the house wasn't properly cleaned and prepped.

Crap. I was hoping for longer. I hate painting. So how much does it cost to hire someone to paint a house? (And do it right.) Fairly large two-story type.

I don't know what painters in your area charge but I usually charge 40 cents a sqare foot for siding plus anywhere from 10 to 25 dollars per opening. If you have french windows go with the 25 dollar price. If the house needs alot of scraping I may charge an additional hourly fee past a pre-set allowance. Not knowing how many windows or how much siding you have I can only give the roughest estimate but I'd say somewhere in the 2500 to 3500 dollar range.

Thanks. It's still hypothetical, but it's good to know what we might be getting ourselves into.

Glad to help. If you do decide to hire it out, make sure to check with local hardware and paint stores for reliable painters. Get several (at least 3 or 4) estimates and don't go with a bid that is much lower than the others. It's acceptable if the bids are close to choose the lowest but don't choose one that seems drastically lower unless you can talk to references from that painter that had thier house painted over 5 years ago.

We figured we'd just invite you to stay over for a week or so.

[Wink]

We could pun after you're done scraping.

Well now, that seems quite the treat. I would love to do that for you two. Be warned tho, after all day slaving in the sun I can be quite the pun gent.

Maybe it's because you were wearing too many coats.

I doubt Bob and Dana would give you the brush off because of your smell. I bet they bristle at the very idea.

by the way, thanks for using the word "slaving." I was afraid to mention our hope that the fumes would lull you into failing to notice the distinct lack of payment.

Yes Dag, I'd sooner kick the bucket!

I'm sure you'll scrape by somehow.

Don't stop now, you're on a roll - er, maybe a sprayer.

Well if I'm not getting any remuneration I absolutely must have someone to minister to my aches and pains. Can you cover that?

Perhaps we should avoid the caulk puns.

When it comes to this thread, I've been walking on eggshells, afraid my jokes would fall flat. If these jokes are repeats, please forgive -- I only glossed over the thread.

Ooh, I wanna come and paint. (So, how weird would it be to have someone painting the second story while holding an umbrella?)

(Also, I got no puns. [Frown] )

Papa, your semi-gloss was perfect, it covered the material quite nicely.
