How do you know if you are getting them? My mouth on the left side is so sore I am having trouble opening it
Maybe I'll just have milkshake for dinner.
Mmm. Milkshake. Or it could just be an irratating sore. What do I do about it?

See a dentist. I'm still pretending that mine don't exist, even though they're coming in now. [Razz]

For the first time in my life, I'm actually wishing I could go to the dentist.

Maybe when Jeff gets a new job, we'll have dental insurance. Or, you know, money to go.

If you have your mouth slightly open, try to move the lower jaw from side to side. Does that make it worse? Is it the jaw hinge area that hurts, or is it the area behind your back tooth?

Wisdom teeth shouldn't make your mouth sore in a not-being-able-to-open it kind of way. More like an ouch something's trying to burst through my gum kind of way. They hurt when you chew, and sometimes just ache constantly, whether you're eating or not.

It could be wisdom teeth, of course, but from my personal experience (I had all 4 out) and what I've heard from friends and family, it doesn't sound like it; unless I'm mistaking what you mean by not being able to open your mouth. I'd get it checked out by a dentist anyway. Hope you feel better soon! [Smile]

I'm still pretending mine don't exist, even though they're all coming in sideways and one is badly broken... gotta love not having dental insurance.

I had almost perfectly aligned teeth before my wisdom teeth came in, although the gap between my two front ones was just large enough to fit a single piece of paper in. I did not need braces or even a retainer. Now, I cannot do the paper thing, and they are slightly crooked although not thousands of dollars worth of crooked. So where all this is going is if your teeth alignment is changing, you might be getting wisdom teeth.

You haven't been to a doctor since age 10? And I thought I was bad. There's no way to tell online what's wrong with your teeth.

I'd try aleve two tablets twice a day or ibuprofen three tablets three times a day for a few days for the pain. Although, if you get need some work on your teeth this week you'll bleed more easily if you've been taking those meds.

You might look up TMJ to see if that is what you have, rather than a tooth problem. http://www.drshankland.com/symptoms.html

If no improvement, and not TMJ, on Monday you can call around. There may be dentists for lower income people without insurance. Or a dental school, the students can do a great job for little money.

That sucks, Syn. [Frown] But you should get it taken care of. It'll be worse if you wait longer. I'm lucky, I actually don't have any wisdom teeth. Unfortunately, for the same reason, I don't have a few other adult teeth.

Give your wisdom teeth to a blond, she could use them.

I am not sure if it is wisdom teeth. It seems to be something else because I can't really open my mouth that well now.

Do you have a sore back there? Or it could be TMJ. Or a combination of both. (*raises hand*) It's happened.

it might be a sore. it burns when I use salt on it.

Sounds like a sore. Just in case it isn't:

If you chew gum, or have nervous habits like clamping/grinding, etc., you should try to curtail these activities for awhile. Basically, they don't necessarily CAUSE the joint problems, but once the joint is inflamed, they will make it worse.

Of course if you are doing the grinding thing at night when you're asleep, you may not be able to control it. Reducing stress levels (Ha!) might help. Or, you can get a bite appliance and at least cut down on the wear & tear.

If you can't afford to go to the Dentist to do this, you might consider getting something like a full mouth bite protector (like those used by boxers, karate, football, etc.). But be careful. Don't get one that'd be a hazard for swallowing (or choking on) in your sleep.

They make ones you can heat up and then bite into to form them to your mouth. Soft rubbery stuff...

Sold at most sporting goods stores.

I only have 13 upper teeth but 14 lower teeth.

That's weird!

Wait... no... recount... 14 upper teeth.

Thank God!

My mom had her wisdom teeth removed when she was 24 I think, and they grew back when she was 26.

I don't know if she had them pulled again or not.

This sucks
IF i do go to the dentist I won't even be able to open my mouth.
What if it's Lockjaw? [Angst]

Well, I'd say that's pretty unlikely.

Yes, but Syn said she hasn't seen a doctor since elementary school. That would be over 10 years, neh?

I'm happy to report that I have fully grown wisdom teeth, and so far they have had no adverse effect on the overall layout of my mouth. My dentist seems to think that they will never cause me any problems. However, he continues to insist that I get braces, and has been doing so for many years. He now tells me that I should have listened to him many years ago, because now I'm going to get sleep apnea or something, and that I'll eventually need oral surgery. For my part, I'm not too worried about it.

She said she hadn't seen a dentist in ten years.
