My 12 year old gave me a sheet of paper for Mother's day. This is what was on it.

Ten Things About You that Bring Me Joy

10. You bring me joy when you ask me about my day. I'm glad someone cares.

9. You bring me joy when you make a special trip to Michael's just for those stickers I want. I'm happy someone likes my scrapbook pages.

8. You bring me joy when you tell me things. I'm glad someone realizes I hate being left in the dark.

7. You bring me joy when you try to help me with my homework. I'm glad someone's there, even if Dad's not.

6. You bring me joy when you come to my peroformances. I'm glad someone appreciates all my hard work.

5. You bring me joy when you cook my favorite dishes for dinner when I'm feeling low. I'm happy somone knows how to cheer me up.

4. You bring me joy when you take time to have mother-daughter talks with me. I'm glad someone can recognize when I'm in pain.

3. You bring me joy when you ask my opinions on important things. I'm glad someone thinks I'm smart.

2. You bring me joy when you answer all my questions during The Lord of the Rings even if I ask them during the best parts. I'm glad someone loves me enough to miss their favorite Faramir scene.

1. You bring me joy when we are together. I'm happy you're my mom and no one will ever be good enough to replace you.

[Cry]

A word about number 7. It sounds like a slam on dad but it isn't. The point is that I try to help her with math and science when Dad isn't home, even though it's not my strong suit, and when he is home Dad helps her with those things.

I couldn't have ever imagined a better gift.

I've been trying for two days, and I say it at last : your daughter made me cry too, Belle. You must be very happy to have each other.

I'll be a terrible dad!

Don't worry Jonathan, you'll discover how patient you can be once you're in charge of children.

[Especially if they have special needs...]

So cute and sweet and thoughtful.

You must be so proud, Belle.

My 9 year old sister made me a card before she left after her last visit (she now lives interstate and I miss her terribly). It's the most sappy love letter I've ever received, full of over-the top and at points slightly bizarre praise.

According to the card I am lovely, heroic, her 'beautiful sister with hazel eyes and white shoulders', a good forgiver (I wonder what prompted that one), amazing, talented and brave, strong and kind, bold, elegant as night and the stars brought me down from heaven.

And it goes on.

It's on my fridge. [Smile]

That is so darling!

It reminds me of what Liam told me while we were waiting outtside his preschool.

"You know what are my three favorite things about you, Mom?"

"No, but I'd love to hear them.." I was nervous, because he was all shifty-eyed, like he was making it up as he went along.

"Number one, when you wear make-up you're really pretty."

I had no make-up on at the time. [Big Grin]

"Two, I like your hair."

Now I'm smiling because I can tell he has no idea what he's going to say next.

Finally he says, "Three, I like your fingernails."

[Confused]

I guess the point is he loves me (and already has a grasp of the concept that women like compliments). [Smile]

Olivetta, that is hilarious! He really knows how to tell a woman that he loves her. [Smile]

Your fingernails? Were they filed and painted? I think that is so cute. It also made me laugh.

lol, yes. I had given myself a French Manicure. It looks pretty good. I think maybe it was just something he'd heard other people compliment me on. I'm not sure.

He's going to be a real heartthrob one of these days. He's extremely cute and charming, with these huge eyes. He will play with the girls on the playground. He's the only boy that will play Prince to the herd of Princesses. They love him. He told me that some other boy asked him if he was girl, since he liked playing with girls.

I thought he might whack somebody in that situation. But he just rolled his gorgeous eyes and said, "No, I'm a boy" like the kid was too stupid to live. In retrospect, I'm very pleased that he didn't perceive it as an insult. Of course, he plays with boys, too. But the girls fawn more. [Wink]
