Is this intentional or a setting that hasn't been adjusted yet?

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

How old was the post you tried to edit? Was it a "before" post by any chance?

Edit: Just went back and edited one of my recent posts - after the forum got back - and it worked.

When trying to edit a post from before I got this message: "Sorry, the time in which you may edit your message has elapsed."

Posted by scottneb (Member # 676) on :

This is just for me to edit.

[EDIT] I don't see a time-limit.

I think the flood control affects edits, so if you make a mistake, and immediately try to edit it, you might hit the 30 second flood control.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

It was a before post. I'll wait awhile and try to edit this one.

Edit: I don't see one either. I was just told "this post is too old to edit" or some such thing.

Taking this towards the absurd conclusion. [Big Grin]

Hmm, I just posted something, then clicked Edit right afterwards 'cause I noticed a typo. And now it doesn't say that the post has been edited... Weird... o_O

Edit: Stop it, guys, I got there first, you can't be any bolder than me! [Razz]

Edit2: Will it show the edit time this time?!

Edit3: What the...????

There we go again, I edited the previous post and it didn't show the edit time...

It seems that the little square-bracketed tag at the bottom that used to say that a post had been edited no longer appears. Interesting.

[Edit: I like the "originally posted by" addition. Handy.]

Yeap, guess so...

Wow, Mike, you're approaching 1000 posts! Do we (and by "we", I mean "me" [Big Grin] ) get to know who you are?

Hmm, I think I can still edit. I guess I'll find out when I hit this button.

Am I the only one who knew that you could already quote a quote since the last board upgrade (which was months and months ago)?

(And this quick-quote thing is pretty cool. ^_^ )

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Same thing with my initial post of the thread... I wonder if it will pose any problems. I also wonder what was the reason behind these changes, but I don't suppose we'll get an answer for this question... Oh well, moving on.

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Weird, I could edit my post but now it has an edit tag. Maybe Pop fixed it. Jon Boy, was there always a button to automatically quote someone? That is the only thing I have ever commented on.

Say, can we do a list within a list?

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

I haven't seen the auto-quote button before.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

This might scare away CT forever. [Frown]
Edit: To test the edit tag.

P.S. crap, what was I going to say? Oh, I think you can find more topics with search now. Like it would say it would get 300 before, but I could never find a way to look at more than one page, whic I imagine was only 50. Oooh, I wonder if the post stalking is better now.

Well, we could do lists within lists before, so I imagine we still can.

On the one hand, I like that edit tags don't show up. I can edit out my spelling/grammar/usage errors and as long as I haven't been quoted, there will be no proof. [Big Grin]

OTOH, I really HATE that there is now a time limit on editing. There have been a number of times that I have posted and walked away from the computer. Then walked back a while later, and seen a dumb mistake (or something needing clarification). As long as it hasn't been replied to, I will often edit the post.

It also means no more changing thread titles!

Pretty please, moderator-type people, could we change these settings?

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

As far as I can tell it works like this:

You can edit with no edit tags for a certain (short) time, then edit with edit tags for a certain (longer) time after that. Beyond whatever that longer time is, no editing is allowed.

Personally, I like that setup.

Oh my heck oh my heck oh my heck! There's a topics started list now!:hyperventilates:

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

twinky, I'd agree with you if it weren't for the thread title change. I think that would actually be the biggest problem with the new system, thanks for pointing it out, rivka.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

[Edit: to twinky] I like the first two parts. I do not like the third.

I think the loss of thread title editing is worth it. Heck, I'd even be fine with no editing permitted whatsoever.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Why are you against post editing (assuming a time-stamped edit message)?

Posted by Lupus (Member # 6516) on :

at the very least...make it so we can edit it...but put in a disclaimer that mocks us for editing long after it was posted. [Razz]

Though, who knows with a new UBB upgrade comes tons of settings and such that were not expected...so maybe the powers that be don't even know about the editing glitch...or can't find the option buried in the admin control panel.

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Can you not delete a thread, then? I seem to recall that thread and post deletion were integrated into the edit function. I hope PapaJ can still delete or if something goes afoul, he'll be locking a lot more threads. And then there is the linking-to goodness. Or badness, depending.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Posts can be deleted. So I imagine that a thread whose initial post is still allowed to be edited can be deleted. An older thread could not.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Well, here's my official (edit: request) to change the setting to allow editing (although maybe not thread deletion). [Smile]

Second problem - all our links to different posts are bad now, I believe. Not the administrator's problem, but people may be very confused for a while. [Big Grin]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

And what's more, we can't even edit the links!

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Found another problem. Or feature... [Big Grin] If you click the "reply with quote" button in a post while you're already replying in that thread, it generates another reply form inside the part that was supposed to show the previous posts. And you can go on like that. Haven't tested the limits, or what happens when you actually go on posting from one of those inner forms. I doubt it would cause much trouble, but I just wanted to point it out in case someone decides to correct it. [Dont Know]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

You could do that before, just using the reply function.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I'm not vehemently it -- not so much so that I'd protest vehemently if it returned -- but I'm quite happy to do without it. This forum moves fast enough that by the time an edit is made there are frequently more posts. That's why I typically don't edit content into the middle of a post, but rather append it. Still, that doesn't solve the problem, it only lessens the extent of the problem.

Basically, I think it's a mostly unnecessary ability that as a side effect makes discussions more confusing.

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

rivka, I was going to post an [ROFL] after your comment in PC's thread, but then I realized it would be a new page and no one would get without going back to the prior page if they even cared. But I just thought you'd like to know, this [ROFL] is for you.

I was referring to Scottneb's post near the beginning of the thread. It seemed like he was wondering if you could quote a quote, and I was kind of confused as to why he would wonder if we could do something that we've been able to do for at least a year or so.

29minutes and counting

And 3hours exceeds the allowed editing time.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

But 1 hour 21 minutes does not. At a guess, 90 minutes? or maybe 120?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

93 minutes is too long.

So it seems to be 90 minutes.

And I think the edit tags kick in after 15 minutes. [addit: nope, 10]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

This is horrifying. [Frown] I hate not being able to edit.

On the other hand, most of my edits are done immediately after I write it, so maybe 90 minutes is okay.

Maybe. [Frown] I don't like this. *uncomfortable*

Added (ha!): I can still edit posts made before The Change.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

kat, that sums up my feelings on the matter precisely.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

GreNME used to have the time limit, and I'm pretty sure it was way under 90 minutes.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

kat, last night one could NOT edit posts from before (*amused*) The Change. The limit has been lifted. [Smile]

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I think what I'd like is a ten-minute edit window, all edits labelled, no editing or deletion permitted outside the window except by moderators. Then the mod gets requests to change thread titles every so often, but that's okay.

Of course, it's all academic. [Razz]

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Um, rivka, it was directed at you. *runs and hides*

I thought it might be. But the thing is, if I have much in the way of OCD tendencies, shouldn't my house be cleaner and more organized? >_<
