To the Marketing Devil. There are about 5 market research places in this town. All of them are walk in and start working kinds of places. Having not found a job and knowing that any attempts to find one from here on out will result in weeks of waiting, I'm going to become a Telephone Market Researcher. I hate this more than anything I can say...But we all must do things we hate in order to survive sometimes.

Ugh. You have my sympathies.

'I'm sorry to drag you from your shower, sir.... Now, sir, there's no reason to get nasty. No, my mother is not--sir! Well, now that just hurts my feelings. Good day!'

Telemarketing sucks reeeeeally hard. Here's hoping something else turns up for you, and I salute you for Doing What Has To Be Done.

By the way, I thought you were doing computer repair or something?

My BIL did that for a few months. Actually, there are good parts, or so he says.

Don't worry Boris, you'll be fine. It's better than working in what Storm Saxon's mother does not.

Nice one.

Oh, and sad "Yom HaZikkaron", happy "Yom HaAtzmaut".

Same to you. I think it's kind of disrespectful to put them on the same day, despite the connection between them.

I did marketing research for a few weeks when I moved to Utah. The place I worked was fun, and people were often more receptive to taking a survey than they would be to buying something (I also did that).

Keep in mind that the daily quotas are often a lofty goal. I stressed too much about reaching them and found out after I quit that I usually had the most calls per day.

Good luck!

I take comfort in knowing that you will burn for all eternity. I suspect prostitution would pay better, in addition to being less degrading and damaging to your soul.

My brother worked for a telesurvery company for a while--after a few months he went to donating plasma because he hated working there so much.

Why, thank you!

People who hate their jobs donate plasma?

I'm going to second the "survey is better than sales" comment. You'll still get hung up on and such, but don't take it personally and just call the next one on the list. You won't have a high-pressure sales quota to worry about, and probably won't be on commision.

More importantly though: You can keep looking for a better job and not feel at all guilty when you quit this crappy one for it. Call centers like this have high turnover and expect few people to last more than a few months.

Kaioshin: When I worked at MCI a lot of people there donated plasma, so apparently the answer is Yes.

I've done it before, too. Yes, I am doing computer repairs, but I don't get much work from that right now, and am waiting to see if the company I work for is going to go under (likely) or keep its head above water. Along with that and waiting for the on-site tech position at the other computer shop in town to open up (later this month or sometime next month), I have to pay rent. So...Anyone want to take a survey?

Boris, you're the most sophisticated ape I've heard of and from (J/k!!!), and one of the best humans I've heard of and from.

Boris,

I'd like to help ease your pain.

So I'd like to offer some alternative ways of viewing this - alternatives to having "sold" your soul.

1. Think of it as more of a "time-share" arrangement.

2. Think of it as a rental.

3. Think of it as a leasing arrangement. *

*If they offer something really spectacular, then inform them of the "option to buy" plan.

(Now I won't feel guilty when I hang up on you. [Wink] )
