I'm keeping two puppies for a while. The first is a pretty little red girl that has a name. "Glyph" short for hieroglyph.

The second is the puppy at the top of this page, who is now called "orange". She's the one I'm having trouble coming up with a call name for.

Her registered name will probably be Lowryder Triple Feature.

Since they are Welsh anything remotely Gaelic or even Elvish is desirable. She's very feminine but with quite a bit of spunk.

Also preferably something that doesn't sound like "Jake" "Glyph" or "Ciara" (prounounced Sierra in this case) so there isn't any confusion with my other animals.

Goober!

Duchess Aileen (welsh corgi...it made sense in my head)

Myfanwh (the name of the neice of a friend of mine)

I'd also prefer 3 syllables or under. Ciara is even kind of long. Traditional herding dog names are only one syllable, becuase the herders felt it was easier to call.

And the problem with many welsh names (and LotR names for that matter) are that there are actual Kennels using them as kennel names in some cases.

For example [Smile] http://www.cwcorgi.com/Aragorn/personal.htm

Goo-ber.

Two syllables.

Do you always look that surprised?

My first though was "Petra", thinking the two puppies would stay together. I know if I had one named "Glyph" the other would have to be named "Petra". But I see that there is no guarantee they will be together in the future.

How about "Rune"?

In that picture from behind she looks like a mammoth.

What is that orange thing you've got her sucking on in the last pic? Hmm . . . she's looks like she's been dusted with orange powder . . . I think you should call her Cheeto.

LOL! That is precious! [ROFL]

lol the orange stuff is cheddar cheese. "Orange" was the original color sharpie I used for marking the back of her neck to keep her straight from her sisters who were all the same color.

KarlEd
Why petra? am I missing some connction between glyph and petra? Rune might not be bad. It isn't as symbolic for her as it is for her sister. you see her red sister has an unidentifiable white marking on the back of her neck that looks like it could mean something if we only knew what language it was.

I'm not normally frilly girly, but I kind of want a girlier name for this puppy. She was the smallest and most delicate of the bunch.

Neldë is the Quenya word for "three." I think that would be a good option, and it's only two syllables.

Well. . . [Blushing] . . . the first thing that came to my mind was "petraglyph", but in looking for the word in the dictionary I find that the word I thought I was thinking of is really "petroglyph".

*lightbulb goes on* No guarantee they will stay together though. I may sell one after the National next year if there is interest. Or I may not... I've got to see how they grow on first.

vana how would you pronounce "nelde"? Is it like Nell-D or Nell-duh?

AJ

Posted by Architraz Warden (Member # 4285) on :

I'd suggest Freydis (no relation to my Hatrack name, I swear).

More Norse than Celtic, but still a fine choice.

Posted by Vána (Member # 6593) on :

Nell-de (it'd be a short e sound, but you hold it for a little longer - wow, that probably doesn't make any sense, does it?)

Closer to Nell-duh, I guess, but closer to the front of the mouth on the last vowel.

What about Freya?

I've become fond of the name Maida. It's from a set of books I used to read about a frail little blond girl named Maida. Probably more German than Gaelic, I suppose...

Oh, well, actually one place I just looked said it was a Greek name meaning shy girl.

Brenna is my vote.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

ohhh, maybe Melian isn't she the valar that was the great grandmother of Arwen?

Problem with "f" sounds. Glyph ends in an "F" sound, which is the defining characteristic of her name.

I also like Vana, but it's too close to my own real name for comfort.

AJ

Maida is a possiblity though...

Cara means friend.

Melian and Vána ( [Wink] ) are lovely choices. Here is a list of the names of all the Valier (female Valar). I think Nessa is also especially nice. She loves to dance and spend time in the green grass.

If I ever get a dog, I'm naming it Jpeg.

Oooo...Nimue. I love that name.

What about Rowan?

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Alright Vana you are better at pronunciation than I am is it Nim-oooo, Nim-ewe or Ni-mu-ay I think any of the three when I read it.

I've also thought of just plain "Arda" and was looking at some of Tolkien's river names. I think I want a fey faery-ish name.

AJ

I would name it Cariad - 'beloved' in Welsh. It's a diminutive that gets used a lot instead of 'sweetie'.

Or Brith - speckled / dappled

Posted by Vána (Member # 6593) on :

I believe Nimue would be pronounced Ni-mu-ay, but the i probably sounds like a long e (Nee-mu-ay).

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Oh dear.

♫ A Nee-mu-ay A Nee-mu-ay, A Nee-mu-ay A Nee-mu-ay
. . .in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the puppy sleeps tonight. . .

[ROFL] at Dana

I think it should be Nimue - rhymes with emu.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

*rotfl* Steve has a version of Leher's
"Cows with guns" changed to "Dogs with Guns" even though he means "corgis" in particular.
Lines I remember:

"We are free roving canines, we run free, today"
"We will run free, herding buffalo and hold our large ears high..."

Branwen is the most famous Welsh chick, and a pretty name imo. [Smile]

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

How about Wren?

Posted by Vána (Member # 6593) on :

ludosti, you could be right - I'm actually not familiar with Welsh. I am, however, nerdy enough to read Tolkien's pronounciation guides, so I can be trusted with those! [Smile]

nothing like a little identity confusion for your dog.

Can't go wrong with Gozer the Gozarian. She looks the part. Sort've.

I suggest Rat. Then you'll have a dog named Rat.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Annie beat me to it...my suggestion was going to be Branwen. Megan is also a nice Celtic name (and thank you, Vana, for the precedent of suggesting one's own name [Big Grin] ).

Posted by Bella Bee (Member # 7027) on :

My dog's name actually is Branwen - Bran for short. She's a black Labrador, so it seemed appropriate. (Branwen means beautiful raven). I also like the shortening as Bran was one of the hounds of Finn Mac Cumhal, the mythic Irish hero.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Bran is also Branwen's brother!

Posted by Bella Bee (Member # 7027) on :

Which means that their parents didn't have much imagination IMO.

By the way, did you know that the tradtion that the ravens must stay on the grounds of the Tower of London is thought to come from the popular myth that Bran's head was buried near the tower?

How about "Easter"? That's what we should have named one of our cats...

"Puddles" is a good name too.

I think we've found a winner: Prada <grin>

AJ

Both of our dogs were named from the dog pound.

(Calypso, which we shortened to Callie and Chelsea.)

I quite like Prada. Short, snappy and cheeky.

Muffy.

Thats the only name you'll ever need. I call all my toys and animals Muffy. It just fits everything.. Well except for my Gi Joe. Who i call Captain Silvia, but Muffy

Please Pick Muffy

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

My great aunt already has a dog named Muffy... a little Yorkshire terrier... so I can't use it, it's already in the family. I agree it's cute though.

We'd moved from goddesses to supermodels and nothing was working but that was kind of how we ended up at Prada. Steve came up with it and it just fit.

Game over. He wins.

My friend and I had a contest of worst dog names ever, however. Most of them were human oriented. Steve, Chuck, and Normal all placed pretty highly. I just like the idea of naming a dog Steve.

I've always been partial to Oy, though... [Blushing]
