Here's the thread where I get all my excitement out, and discuss one topic a day.

Today:

Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot

Temperatures have been climbing, even with thunderstorms coming through. Make sure you all bring clothes for warm weather and plenty of sunscreen; highs are predicted to be in the upper 80's and lows in the upper 60's during DallasCon.

I got my first sunburn of the year yesterday.

The T-storms are supposed to have cleared out by then, though; hopefully that will happen!

I had never seen a thunderstorm actually literally pass through until I moved here; you can hear it coming, then it gets closer, then it's on top of you, then it rolls on off! I grew up in the land of valleys near the sea; we didn't often get thunderstorms, and when we did, they stayed and stayed and stayed all day. It's kinda cool to see them go on by.

blackcatwings (Ivygirl's friend) is NOT coming to DallasCon -- something about being grounded due to a poor grade in Chemistry. So our group is back down to just three (note for your dinner reservations).

I'm so exhausted after having just returned from five days in D.C. that I'm afraid to begin even thinking about DallasCon for a few days yet...

So, that means they're down to 3 in rivka's room, then? (This should be in the planning thread, but what the heck!)

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ok, that means only two people to fight over the other bed. [Wink] We should start a betting thread -- one is threatening to bring hardware, and the other is a mother of three. [Big Grin]

I'm sorry to hear that bcw can't come. [Frown] The irony is that I tutor chemistry . . .

8 days to go!

Today: Eating Well in Richardson

Restaurant reservations are made. We made them for 9:30. Orders will have to be in by 9:40 or 9:45 so the people in the kitchen can go home. [Smile]

It was quite amusing, actually; forgot to leave a name, called back, and the reason they hadn't asked for it was because they have caller ID. [Laugh] Boy, I felt stupid.

Check out the menu if you haven't already. [Party]

Just one week to go! This time next week, we'll be on our way to pick up rivka!

Today's topic: Will anyone want to go swimming?

I'm thinking teenagers here, especially, who might get hot and bored and want to go.

That weekend the City of Richardson's public pools open, and on the 28th, there's free admission from 1-9 at all pools. Or if someone just really wants to go hang out alone, we're allowed a guest or two at our pool, and it doesn't get too much use. So that option's open. [Smile]

Actually, the irony, rivka, is that Ivygirl has been tutoring this girl in chemistry as best she can. Ivygirl has an "A" in the class, and spends many evenings over at bcw's house trying to help. So Ivygirl feels bad too -- that her friend is struggling with chemistry.

Swimming? Oh my. We don't even currently own swimsuits that fit - it has been so long. And none of us know how to swim, and we all sunburn really really easily. But I'll mention it to my two and see if they are interested.

..now, if there is a hot tub...... [Wink]

FG

edit: I can't believe I wrote "swing" instead of "swim" and KQ didn't even tease me about my mistake! [Eek!]

There's nothing at the hotel; I just thought that teenagers might be more interested in spending part of the day at the public pool (or our apt. pool) than hanging out with old weirdos and a bunch of kids. [Wink]

[Frown] I have some students like that in my class. Who are really trying, but just don't get it.

It's one of the reasons I base part of the grade on effort/participation, on their notes, and on effort shown on homework. Even so, I have had students who were really trying and managed to do so poorly on their tests that they got high Cs or low Bs.

I'm glad my parents were always more concerned about whether I was putting in effort than my actual grades. (Well, it wasn't true at the time, when an A- might get me more grief than a C.)

Didn't do this yesterday because it was my birthday and I was away from the computer most of the day. [Big Grin]

Today's topic: Birthday Cake and Rhubarb Pie

We're planning on chocolate cake for the birthday cake. No objections, right? Good.

Now, I don't want to make rivka jealous, but she'll be getting her own rhubarb soon enough, anyway, so since ElJay is sending me rhubarb, and it should get here in time for me to bake it, I will almost certainly have some rhubarb pie that everyone is welcome to share on Friday. [Smile] I thought it would be kinda neat. And you'll also get to try my family recipe for pie crust. Yumminess! [Big Grin]

Ok, in order for me to be able to attend without feeling guilt, I need to get certain things done first.
I also need to update my resume for the interview I have with Academy 123 on Wednesday, and it would be good if I made it into the office for a few hours this afternoon (edit: it's 4:30 already -- evening) to play catch-up there.

Encouragement, nagging, and other forms of tushie-kicking are requested. [Wink]

Yeah, it does. But if they cancel the interview at the last minute (as they did two months ago), I'm outta there. [Razz] They're hiring teachers to record stuff (like the samples) for other textbooks. It would be supplemental to my other job(s), not instead of.

Physics test is now 99% complete, and I realized that the piece I need (the extra credit reading I assigned them) is at school.

So I'm heading over there for a while.

I don't have Fishtail's e-mail.

I feel like I missed someone, but I can't spot who it is.

3 days to go!
Today we discuss: Fun and Games

So, I'm planning on improv games; I love them, and they are so much fun! (I'm thinking Freeze, Questions Only, whatever you all like.) You could veto me, but what fun would that be?

Since card games are a Hatrack con tradition, we'll also want to play some of those, neh? We can bring Pit, Phase 10, Cranium... You all are welcome to bring whatever.

We can also bring a portable DVD player that'll hook to a tv, and some DVDs (you know, like Pirates of the Carribean, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Galaxy Quest...) You are welcome to bring any you want to share. In addition, someone had suggested a Bollywood flick or two; I'd be up for that. Maybe while we're out on Fri. we'll pick one up.

Any other suggestions?

This one isn't a "mingling game". [Smile] It's played sitting in a circle, is almost entirely painless, and has food at the end. Good food. Junk food, in fact. [Big Grin]

I don't know if there will be a next time or not. [Dont Know] On the other hand, I'm sure there are still hotel rooms, 4 hours isn't that long, and the hotel is only $44 a night + tax for a single... We'd love to count you in if you want to come and be instantly real! [Smile]

Lurker-girl -- are the massages limited to women only?

I personally can not stand to have anyone touch my back in any way, except my son (the son that I'm bringing with me). Ever since he was a boy, he has had the "magic hands" that relieve the tension in my back when I've had a bad day. But he has had no training or anything -- he just knows what I need to relax my muscles, and my brain trusts him enough to let him do it.

I'd like to return the favor to him -- by having him get a massage, because he's never had one, nor has any idea what a professional massage is like. On top of that, he threw his back out (kinda) yesterday while "sword-fighting" with his brother (with sticks -- the guy thing, you know). *teenagers*!!

He may not be willing to let you do it. But I thought I would ask.

Farmgirl

Posted by Lurker-Girl (Member # 7802) on :

Massages are not limited to women only (just ask Jim-Me--he was one of my first lab rats, lol). Maybe your son can give me some pointers! [Smile]

If he's willing to let me work on him, I'm willing to give him a massage; am I remembering correctly that he's a minor? (This won't really make a difference--we're just supposed to have permission from parents/guardians when we work on minors).

Edited to say that it may not be a good idea to work on him if his back is really out--I'll have to check on that.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Well, we will see when we get there. Yes, he's a minor (17). However, I always forget that since he's 6'4" and 250 pounds. I figure his back will really be better by Friday -- just overexertion.

Only 2 days left!!!

Today's topic: "...You belong in the zoo..."

So, was anyone interested in doing the zoo? Who? How many? When? I figure Sat. might be good; we'll probably have cake around 5:30 or 6, but it shouldn't be hard to get back by then, considering the zoo closes around then anyway. [Smile] The train station we're by is blue line; the zoo is on the red line after it splits, so there would be a transfer. The ride on the train, with transfers, would be between 46 minutes and 1 hour 7 minutes, depending on when you caught the transfer. (You can plan this in advance at dart.org.) Or there are other options: drive all the way to the zoo, drive to a red line station and take the train from there (that's not too far, but would really just be a waste of gas, since it would take about the same amount of time), or, you know, not go. [Wink]

Who wanted to go? What are you up for? Or would you just rather hang around and hang out? [Smile]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Lurker-girl, if you want ElJay rhubarb pie, you have to come Friday. [Razz]

Will saying that it's macadamia nut candied popcorn make a difference?

Or we can bring chocolate just for you.

We want you to come! It will be fun!

Posted by Lurker-Girl (Member # 7802) on :

I wasn't saying I wouldn't show up on Friday--if I want to fit all the massages in, I pretty much have to. I was just talking about the 'getting to know you game'. [Razz]

Rhubarb pie and candied popcorn are quite a lure....and I'm used to carrying my own supply of chocolate with me. [Big Grin]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

On the zoo note, Dallas Zoo has a commercial that gets stuck in my head everytime I see it. I keep humming the tune. As for coming up, it won't happen unfortunately. Driving is my least favorite thing to do, so 4 hour drives don't appeal to me (which is why I only get to see my family on extended school holidays, i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and Summer). Oh well.

And so, on to today's topic:

What to remember to pack for DallasCon

Sunscreen is a necessary if you burn at all; even if you don't usually, you might want to bring some just in case, because partial cloud cover, like we're supposed to have, and humidity, like we always do, can magnify burns.

On the same note, you probably will want either sunglasses or a brimmed hat or both.

Bring light clothing; it will be hot. But you might also want to bring an umbrella and a button-up shirt or very light sweater or sweatshirt in case it rains and the wind picks up and it feels chillier than it is at night or something.

Bring a swimsuit if there's a possiblity you will want to go swimming.

Bring food if you don't want to go out every meal, and maybe some basic cookware if you'll want it; there are kitchenettes in the rooms, and you'll have access to a fridge and sink and all that jazz. Or just bring the cookware, and you can pick food up in town. [Smile]

Bring things to do that are fun as a group: games, CDs, movies (we'll have a DVD player, I don't know if there will be VCRs), maybe something else. If anyone has Scrabble Deluxe and would like to bring it, you're welcome to, but no need to bring regular Scrabble, we have that. Also, if anyone has Fluxx, please bring it!

Bring your appetite for Indian food! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

If you're up for "freak the normals", you may want to bring a costume or fun to wear, weird clothes, but that's totally up to you. (I am always up for this!)

But most of all, bring yourself! [Smile] We're looking forward to seeing everyone! Yay! [Party]

Okay, we can make it work. I'm sure being dropped off and picked up will work for you, right? We might need to go back to let people into your hotel room. [Wink]

kq, I have confirmed my flights with American, and they are from/to American gates.

That actually helps more than Terminal C; many domestic flights come into terminal C, but the name of the airline helps a lot. [Smile]

Not that you're going to see this; you're gone already...

*turns to FG* w00t! [Big Grin] [Party]

wOOt!

[The Wave]

(don't worry Kama -- I'm going to wear my KamaCon shirt sometime during the weekend, just in your honor...) [Wink]

And everyone who signed my t-shirt at WenchCon will not be forgotten; that's what Ems and I are wearing today. (Jeff is wearing red for higher visibility. [Wink] )

And last I heard, Rivka was planning on wearing her Annie skirt. [Smile]

When we arrive, I should be wearing my Farmgirl shirt (that I made for KamaCon so people would know who I am) and MAYBE Ivygirl will be wearing her Ivygirl shirt. She doesn't like it much, so she may not.

And everyone has a new challenge -- my son (who is currently not a Hatracker) wants your input on a suitable screenname for him if he were to join Hatrack in the future. You have to kind of get to know him first, then see what you think fits.

Hmmm. And should it have "boy" in it, or does he not want to be in the family? [Wink] (Says the woman whose family has matching screennames.)

Rivka's plane is in the air, as of 6:47 am PDT. Yay! Good thoughts for a safe flight for her.

I tried to think of a way to simultaneously express my gladness / envy that another Hatrack gathering is occurring while pointing out that I was in on the ground floor in a witty fashion, but I can't.

So...

Darn you! / Yay!

If anyone is still around, I'll offer a w00t (but every time I do, I think of the Aggies--LOL).

KQ, I'm getting off work earlier than I thought--do you have any idea when y'all will be at the hotel? [Smile]

Boon was thinking around between 2 or 3. We're going to do errands with Rivka, then take her out to Plano to see a non-HR friend. Then we're heading back, so I don't know when we'll be there, but someone will be there by around 3:30 or 4 at the latest. [Smile]

Ok. Thanks. [Smile]

*Can almost smell the pies from here* [Wink]

I'm having to be scolded now. They are so tempting! *has not had rhubarb pie in almost two years*

Posted by Lurker-Girl (Member # 7802) on :

I'm not sure I've ever had rhubarb pie, so if you do give into temptation, please save me a piece, ok? [Wink]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I won't give into temptation. We only have an hour before we have to leave to pick up Rivka. I have to, like, pack and stuff, I guess.

Alright, I'm already behind on my morning schedule (big surprise!), so I won't be out of here until around 1pm, which will put me in around 4:30 at the earliest.

He's coming in at 8:30, and will drop by later tonight, FG.

My husband just pointed out that the kitchens have flatware, dishes, and basic cookware, so we really don't need to bring anything but food and Emma's dishes. [Smile]

...and 15 mins. late, we are leaving for the airport. If anyone needs us from this point on, call the cell phone. See you all soon! Yay!
