I saw Star wars today, and it had a glaring European history pop culture reference, when Darth Sidous said "I am the senate"
Louis XIV Said "I am the state" after Cardinal Mazrin died..

So it got me thinking, what other european history references do you see in todays modern movies/books/tv shows?

Anyone seen ne recently?
(not to mention the fact i get Extra credit in my AP Euro class for every reference i find)

You'd probably have gotten more responses if you hadn't mentioned that last bit. I've found jatraqueros to be violently allergic to doing anyone's schoolwork.

I know. I wasn't asking for help or anything. But when i watched Star Wars, i thought it was awesome that i actually knew one of the "educated" people jokes (if u can call it that)

I just thought it was cool, no i wont edit the post, if they want to help they will

Sounds good.

Well, I remember reading an article once about my favourite show (Due South) where the star, producer, some-time writer, etc (all one guy) said that not an episode went by where there wasn't a Hamlet reference. The fact that the main character's dead father is in every other episode as a very annoying ghost is the most obvious one.

The Merovingian in the Matrix may be a referece to the the fact that some believe the Merovingians were descendants of Christ.

In the Matrix, the Merovingian had god-like powers and some speculate that he may have been an earlier version of The One, a christ figure.

He actually said 'L'Etat, c'est moi'. The State, it is me. Not quite the same, and I won't give Lucas credit for just altering it. I officially consider this a coincidence.

I actually really like when people make self-references, or other movie-type ones, in the movies themselves. Those are usually pretty clever, and get a laugh out of me. Like, in "How to Marry a Millionaire," Lauren Bacall said:
"I love older men. Like that crazy guy in the African Queen!"

(Note: "Crazy guy" being Humphrey Bogart, her husband in real life.)

The Siege was a movie made back in 1998 about terrorism and has proven to be rather prophetic.

General William Devereaux (Bruce Willis) exclaims "I am the law!" upon being t0old that rounding up people, stripping them naked and depriving them of food and water (yes, you read that right) is against the law.

I forget the episode, but at one point Mr. Burns (on The Simpsons) said, "Who do you think I am, Lorenzo de Medici?"
