I could bag on the the linguist in "Stargate" again. Oh, wait, I seem to have fundamentally misunderstood the nature of the irony we are going for here.
While it is true that you missed my point at first, I would love to hear you rant about the linguist in Stargate.

There's not much you can say about him really. He ends up with one of the more beautiful women in all of cinema [Wink] .

Sorry, just have a little crush on that character/actress. [Blushing]

Xav, my freshman year, my friend Jason requested Stargate every time we wandered out to rent a movie. Every time. For six months. We agreed once, and then couldn't find it anywhere in town, at any of the six video stores. I have vivid memories of the Egyptian Chick's power. [Razz]

Dude. I don't even remember what she looked like.

I do. [Big Grin]

Her name is Sha're.

Ah, you found a different link than me, but good one!

I found out lots more detail about Stargate than I ever knew before Right Here

Farmgirl, that pic must be the actress in the TV show. The one in the movie is the one I like. (never even seen the TV show)

Edit: It looks like Vaitiare Bandera is the actress in the picks you guys linked.

Mili Avital is the one I like [Smile] .

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Ah -- I wondered why KQ's link listed two different people as playing the part of Sha're -- and that would explain it! Mili Avital and Vaitiare Bandera....

(trying to remember if I saw the movie version)

The movie was okay. But the show is great.

One of these days I will probably watch it....

Wow. I totally didn't associate "the linguist in stargate" with Daniel Jackson. Weird.

Posted by Boris (Member # 6935) on :

He's an Egyptologist in the movie. Not a linguist.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yeah, technically he's an archaeologist with a special interest in Egypt, languages, and the link between Mayan and Egyptian cultures, or some such.

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Like most Hollywood scientists, his particular field of study varies from plotline to plotline. [Big Grin]

-Trevor

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

He also seems to know just about every language ever known to mankind, and a few that weren't. He can recognize cultural influences after 5 seconds of observation, down to the specific century and Native American tribe, where applicable. Plus, he's dead sexy.

Truly a man for all seasons. [Big Grin]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

We're supposed to overlook the fact that he seems to know everything about every single human culture ever to have graced the surface of the earth.

Afterall, he IS very very smart.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Which one? 'Cause I think the movie guy, James Spader, is far sexier than Michael Shanks, the TV guy.

While neither is in actuality geeklike, James comes closer. And what can I say? Geeks are hawt.

Another pic for good measure. [Big Grin]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

He doesn't look very geeky here, here, or here.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Nope. But in a contest of who is less geeklike, I think Michael is lightyears beyond James.

Check this out. And this, and this.

How they expect us to believe geek from that... pfff! He's more Hollywood Total Babe. Booooring. [Sleep]

Even in a suit with a haircut, James looks like a dweeb. [Big Grin]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Wow. Get him out of the ill-fitting air force gear and he looks a lot like Ben Bowder from Farscape.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Yup. The piercing blue eyes. Except, I think Ben is actually quite hawt. I think it's his whole "crazy act". And he makes me laugh. Not boring at all.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Michael Shanks is the one I think is hottest. He's just got this sweet mannerism, you know? Both in and out of the role. Plus, yeah, hot. Hot hot hot. And Richard Dean Anderson is much hotter than Kurt Russell. Yummy. *drools*

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Since I haven't watched the show much, it is hard to tell. I might warm up to him, given the chance. [Smile]

Sweet is good.

I think I have a platonic man crush on Richard Dean Anderson.

Posted by alluvion (Member # 7462) on :

*dunno nothin' bout' no sci-fi shows*

but, sweetness is a childish craving and not at all good (as any child who's gorged herself on the post-halloween's sweets knows)

but saucy is definitely good.

ranks somewhere between dill and tart.

Ditto, ditto, ditto.

In fact, why am I here? I have a completely-unwatched SG dvd waiting for me!

See ya!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

*jealous*

For some obscure reason, my husband put the Clone Wars DVD, which is completely available online (we have my friend's Hyperspace un and password, so we get in free) on our Netflix queue, and it's holding up our SG-1. [Grumble]

Yes, gorgeous, buffed, well-dressed, eloquent geeks are hawt. [Big Grin]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

If he's georgeous, buffed, well-dresses, and eloquent, I think it's fair to say that he's no geek.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Hmm...I know some Hatrackers that fit the above description but are still, definitely, geeks.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

And, he's totally a geek. He gets all excited about science and history. He'd rather not be buffed, it just is kinda essential when you might have to be running and fighting for your life at any time. As for well-dressed, it's not too hard to dress well some of the time when you spend most of your time in fatigues. [Wink] And what he gets eloquent about is usually geeky stuff- at least to the military types he hangs with.

Daniel Jackson is a geek.

Posted by Sartorius (Member # 7696) on :

Daniel Jackson, I long for you tragically.

And you too, Jack O'Niell.

The TV cast is way hotter than the movie cast.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I dream about SG-1. And I mean really realistic dreams. Usually with some scenario where I get to kiss one or the other of them. [Blushing]

These are now practically the only dreams I ever have that I remember.

Perhaps the male TV cast is hotter.

I believe Michael Shanks started muscling up on his own accord - which does somewhat take away from the "socially inept bookworm" schtick.

-Trevor

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

But he's still so sweet!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Yeah -- when the show starts, he has a normal human physique.

But a few years in, he bulks up to Hollywood proportions.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Being an Air Force civilian consultant will do that.

Sorry, I'm being snarky - ignore me.

He studies! He's in his lab with papers all the time when he's on-world, and he always seems to try to keep up with the latest papers, and he knows what his former colleagues are up to most of the time. Most of them, anyway.

Trevor, I love you lots, but don't you start bad-mouthing Daniel Jackson or Jack O'Neill, or I will have to kill you. [Razz]

I'm all about the Michael Shanks action. And not just because his last name is "Shanks."

Though most of the time on the show, the cultures/cultural influences shown ARE that easily identifiable, so it's really not THAT huge an accomplishment.

And I think Daniel Jackson is primarily an Egyptologist, and one of the few who's done research in the cross-pollination of ancient cultures. Or something.

You have those too, kq? I'm glad I'm not the only one.

On an unrelated SG note, anyone else excited for the foray into Arthurian legend this upcoming season? I know I saw Excalibur in the preview commercial...

You all make me wish for cable TV so I too could enjoy the wonders which you speak of . . .

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Oh, I guess I better check in here...

One really great thing about being young in the 80's was the panoply of cheap movies starring James Spader. And I'm so glad my sister got me to watch Sex Lies and Videotape even though I can't recommend it in my official capacity as the poo-pooer of all R rated movies.

The draft script on the internet doesn't seem to have what I was looking for. I may just have to watch the movie again. The sacrifices I make for Hatrack. Okay, those of you who have seen the movie, doesn't Daniels say something about understanding the language once he got the vowels straightened out, or did I merely pick that up from the context of him talking to Sheera?

I don't think so . . .

[nitpick] Daniel, no S; and Sha're (Sheera would be a character from an 80s cartoon).

I don't have the movie, so I can't check, but that sounds familiar.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Actually, what happened is this: Sha're's people were forbidden to write. But they had secret writings hidden away, and once Daniel saw the written words, he started pointing at them and pronouncing them, and she corrected his pronunciation. So, he did say something about the vowels being different, and there were a few other differences, but once he was able to grasp the main differences, he was able to communicate with them pretty effectively.

You don't need cable to enjoy the wonder that is Stargate. I don't have cable. I use Netflix. The first seven seasons of SG-1 are on DVD. [Smile]

It's been over 10 years since I saw it. I would also have to review the qualifications that he presents at the beginning of the film. But as I recall, he was some form of Semitic Linguist, and in Semitic Languages the vowels don't hardly matter. Like, for several centuries the Koran was written with no vowels.

But the people on Abydos speak some form of Ancient Egyptian or some such, don't they?

Darn it! Y'all passed me! (I have two episodes left of s5, and the first s6 disk came today.)

pooka, vowels don't signify in written Semitic languages, but they do when the languages are spoken, neh? And he was decoding a spoken language, and its shifts from the form he was familiar with.

If that doesn't work, then just remember: it's comics physics (well, linguistics, but you know what I mean) [Wink] .

'Salright, if he comes back with a $40,000 a year job and an opportunity to live both near my family and where I will have an opportunity to bring in at least another $10,000 a year without working outside the home (caring for my aunt's goddaughter's children in my home), I suppose it's worth it. And I still get to see Boon for her birthday, and we still get to spend Tue. (our anniversary) together. *sigh* It's just a few days. I can get through that. Especially with plenty of library books and some movies to watch.
