Okay, here's the deal, I have a laptop with a wireless network card and in my dorm I was able to access a wireless internet. Well now, I've moved back in with my parents and they only have dial-up, which is killing me.

Therefore, I am thinking about setting up a wireless network at my home, the only problem is I have no idea how to do it or what I need. So I figured there has to be someone on Hatrack who knows more about internet conections than I do...so here I am.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me.

You need a wireless router, which connect through ethernet connections (cable modem/dsl).

I dont think you can have a wireless dial up connection.

Okay.
So how do I get cable model or dsl?

Well, you can set up a wireless network with a modem, you just need a router with a built in modem (such as an Apple Airport). It wouldn't get you any extra speed for connecting tot he internet, though.

Maybe I need to rephrase the question: how do I get a faster internet connection, be it wireless or otherwise?
I'd like wireless so I can use my laptop instead of my parent's PC, but the main priority I'm looking at is getting something much faster than what I get now (about 32kbps)
So how does one go about doing that?

One pays for it.

Best sort of connection in the price range is cable internet, usually. Call up your cable company, ask if they have cable internet, and get prices. Then call up your phone company and ask about DSL options (and prices).

Just so you know, it's not that your replies weren't helpful, it's just that I'm totally inept with computers and computer-speak. I ask questions and what I mean is not necessarily what I ask the first time around.

The wireless bit is incidental to your problem. Wireless happens at YOUR end; you can make your Internet connection wireless with a wireless router.

However, your Internet connection itself is painfully slow. That, sadly, you cannot fix without getting a new Internet provider.

In general, DSL will run you around $24-$29 dollars a month. Cable access costs about five to ten bucks more.
