Do they want us all to work at Walmart or something?

Actually, it makes a certain sense - you're going to be limited to managerial level jobs, some minor production functions that can't be outsourced or are kept internal for security reasons and the rest of the job force may very well end up in service fields of some sort.
Defining medical staff, lawyers and similar "support personnel" roles as service related.

I didn't read the whole article, but I am a programmer in the US. I myself feel stable enough, because while its cost efficient for large companies to outsource, I don't think it ever will for the small ones. And after working for a small computer company, I don't ever want to work for a big one.
Today I saw our Vice President lugging a water jug from the supply room to the break room (all the way across our office).
As long as their are lots of small programming firms around, I'm not worried. As long as the economy doesn't completely tank, I should be okay.
