Slashdot has posted a notice about a rumor that a rider will be attached to an upcoming appropriations bill that would require all digital televisions to place copyright protections on programs. One of the problems is that the flag would probably make no distinction between fair use and copyright violations.

This site has a form e-mail available for those who want to inform their senators of their disapproval of the broadcast flag. It's for people who live in states with a senator on the appropriations committee, since the bill is a large appropriations bill and would probably not be blocked in the full Senate due to a rider.

I wish more people with an understanding of how these technologies actually work were in positions to regulate them.
