Hello, my friends. Here I am, your favorite brazilian jatraquero nicknamed after a Lotr archvillain (because there's only one, I guess).
These last few months I couldn't write much over here. Working too much, I guess. I'm not teaching in the "favelas" (slums) anymore. After some of the events I've been through last year, I just had to take a break.
I'm teaching at two public schools and a local (small) private University (the best, here in Brazil, are the public ones). Better payment, much less risk...but next year I may be back to teaching in the favelas. Not as a hired teacher, though. This time, I'm developing my own educational project to be submitted to the State's Educational Board. If they like it, they'll sponsor it, and maybe I get to hire a few teachers and do thinks my way. Problem is: too much politics involved in getting the money. Oh, well...time will tell.
Oh, yes...I'm also starting a chess club in the schools where I teach. I never taught chess before, although I like the game and, at one point in my life, was almost becoming good at it. So, if anyone taught (or was a member) of a chess club, I'd gladly accept some advices.
Oh, yes... I did get over my previous break-up (if someone still remembers that ridiculous thread). I'm currently dating a wonderful girl, who's been my friend for years (I never thought about dating old friends, but it's been great!).

Well...that's it. Oh, and watch out for my doctorate thesis to be published in the next few months. Only in portuguese, though [Wink] .

Love you all, folks!

Just remembered. There are some pictures of my classes here . They were required to create and present a "television news program". We enjoyed ourselves a lot during the presentations, as you can see, hehehe.

I am so glad to hear that you are doing well, and that you took your experience in the favelas and turned it into an opportunity (by being inspired to create a program).

I am proud to 'know' you!

I'm in awe of your work, man. Good on ya!

Oh, and in regards to your new relationship: I married *my* best friend, and it was the best decision I ever made. (not to pressure you or anything, haha)

Your work does sound fascinating Eduardo. I hope you can get the funding for it. It must be so exciting to have plans to go in and make a difference somewhere with the knowledge you've gained. And if you can get other people on board with you! Wow!

I'm in a class right now called "teacher as researcher" and we're examining what our 'life's work' is going to be, whether we'll publish papers about research we do in our own classrooms etc. I hate research and number crunching and control groups and all of that, but this class has really got me thinking. I mean, after I get my Master's this summer, I'll be part of the educational academia and could feasibly start to publish. What's cool is that I'm just now starting to think of things I want to figure out and research. It sounds like you've done a lot of that already and now you might have a chance to put your findings into practice! I hope you can, that's got to be one of the most exciting things in the world!

[Smile] Oh, and it's really good to hear from you. I'm so glad to hear that you're happy.
