I'm going to be in Lawrence from July 2nd through the 6th or so. Any interest in a little gathering of some sort?

Farmgirl, would you be able to make it up to Lawrence, or would I need to meet you somewhere?

When does punwit get back from his Black Hills trip, anybody know off the top of their head?

Posted by Tstorm (Member # 1871) on :

Well, I'm in KC, but I didn't make any requests for this holiday. So, I'm stuck with some of the crap shifts. The store closes July 4 at 7pm, of course. so I'll probably make it to whatever fireworks show I want to. I'm off on July 6, too.

Basically, don't count on me, but I'll pay attention to this thread for whatever everyone else works out.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

I'll be here. Well, not in Lawrence, but nearby. We could BBQ or something. And you know, from the 2nd to the 4th we can set off fireworks, which, unless I'm mistaken, you can't do in Lawrence.

I have a scary bathroom, two twin air mattresses (huge three foot tall things) and a pull out couch that is 50 years old, so it has an actual mattress, just in case Farmgirl needs a place to stay, or someone.

Or, if you want to meet in Lawrence, I could do the 2nd through the 4th. Maybe the 5th or 6th, depending on the time and what/where it's going to be.

You know, Bob and Dana are only a few hours from here. We could drive out there for the weekend and help them unpack or something. I'm sure they'd love guests this soon after moving. [Wink]

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

If you come here, you WILL be drafted into helping with OUR scary bathroom. It's gutted and needs to be stripped, sanded, floored, and have various new things installed.

So, sure, c'mon over. We'll order pizza.

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

I'm back and I'd love to get together. The 4th is out for me unless you all would like to visit here. The 2nd would be the best date for me but I'll see what I can do if others prefer some other day.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Noemon. I'm pretty much open that weekend except for Sunday the 3rd -- have several church activities. I also have a cousin coming in from Seattle to visit, but she's staying with others, so I'm sure I can work around that.

Don't mind driving to Lawrence - in fact, I love that drive. I vote we all get together than drive up to whatever store TStorm works at in K.C. and bug him for awhile.

Anyone know if Screechowl checks Hatrack much during summer? (TStorm?)If we don't hear from him, I have his work e-mail address and can nudge him to let him know of this thread. He is in that northern area of Kansas as well.

Bob, the idea of a bunch of us descending on your house for a remodeling party actually sounds like an enormous amount of fun. Plus I'd get to practice on your place before attempting some of the same things on mine.

Of course, my family and some of my local friends in Lawrence probably wouldn't be especially pleased if I cut out on them early for a trip.

In terms of getting together, the best day for me would probably be the 5th. It's possible that I could pull off getting together on the 2nd, but it would probably be tough. I'd be up for either going to Kayla's for BBQ, or just meeting in Lawrence and going to FreeState or La Parilla or something.

Ooo - if it ends up being the 5th, I will have to take a vacation day. I'll have to check on that.

Well, I don't want you having to do that if we can help it. My plan is to leave Dayton after work on Friday, and I was going to spend the night somewhere along the way and finish the drive in the morning, getting into Lawrence at 1 or 2 in the afternoon. It's possible that I could juggle plans with my parents and free up Saturday evening. Sunday the 3rd is wide open for me, but that won't work for you, and while I could swing the 4th, that won't work for punwit, and probably wouldn't work for most other people. I'd be able to get together any time on the 5th, or during the day on the 6th.

Of course, if people were interested in gathering at my parents' place on the 2nd that would work wonderfully for me. Any interest in that? It's out in the country about 20 miles from Lawrence (in Clinton, for those that know the area).

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

by Clinton Lake?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Yeah, about a half mile from Bloomington beach on the far side of the lake from Lawrence. Here is a map that shows where the "town" is.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

That would be fine with me. I think.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Can I go fishing while I'm there? [Wink]

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Sure, if you don't mind the mutant-ness of them. You know, there are nuclear missiles buried under the lake, right?

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

[Big Grin] That's enough to draw the kids' interest in going there....

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Would we be able to get together at your parent's house on Saturday during the day and then have dinner at Free State that evening, or we could perhaps get together again on Sunday. I'm not sure about Tuesday but I probably could do that if push came to shove.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Tuesday (the 5th) definately isn't going to work for us after all. I forgot my daughter works that day (she works at the zoo) and I have to take her/pick her up. And I want us all to come up.

So Saturday is probably best bet, although Monday the 4th also works for us at this point.

Bump

Noemon, what's our status? Is Saturday going to work and if so what about food? Do we bring something for lunch, dinner? Go out for the evening meal? I'm looking forward to our little get-together.

My husband asked about the status of this shindig and I repeated the above, saying "What is Free State?"

His reply? "They have the most awesome onion rings in the world."

Who knew?

Well? What's up? Are the Kansas clump unable to make decisions? Or is Noemon already on the road?

If we can't get a hold of him, we could BBQ here on Saturday afternoon and then drive out to bug him Saturday evening. And if he isn't up for being bugged, punwit and I could go to Free State on Sunday for the world's best onion rings and meet him.

Or, punwit and I could get together with Noemon on Sunday and then Noemon and I could get together with Farmgirl on Monday.

And Tstorm, if you are open any of these days, you could join us.

Hey guys, I've missed some of the thread's bumps.

Why don't we BBQ at Kayla's place Saturday afternoon? If we were to do it late afternoon/early evening I'd definitely be in town by then (my plan is to get to Lawrence in the morning, but you know how it can go when you're travelling). Alternatively, if Kayla didn't want to cook, we could meet at her place and hang out for a few hours, and then go and get dinner at FreeState.

Is Saturday still free for everybody (or most everybody)?

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Saturday works for me and BBQ at Kayla's is fine. Farmgirl will check in later and I'm pretty sure Saturday afternoon will work for her. If we do the BBQ at your house, Kayla, what would you like for me to provide? If we have any interested parties I could swing by Free State and pick up some fresh brewed beer. Or if most folks are tee-totalers let me know if I could bring a salad or something.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I meant to ask the same question (and was actually thinking of bringing the exact same thing!). Anything you'd like me to bring Kayla?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

What are y'all interested in eating? Burgers? Hot dogs? Brats? I'll make potato salad, which my husband loves, but you know how potato salad is like stuffing. Everyone has their favorite kind.

Also, my grilling skills usually consist of burnt on the outside, raw on the inside, so be prepared. [Eek!]

punwit, my husband drinks beer, but I don't know about anyone else, so maybe just a six pack.

Noemon, you'll have just gotten off the road. Just bringing yourself will be good enough.

I'm thinking burgers and hot dogs, potato salad and deviled eggs, some chips and dip and maybe brownies. Sound good?

Maybe we should have jello, too. I hear no gathering is a hit without it. Anyone want to bring some green jello with carrots in it? [Evil]

I read that last post there, and got REALLY confused for a second because of a non-existant comma I put it a sentance...

It scanned like "punwit, my husband, drinks beer..."

Sure. Saturday afternoon/evening works for me. Kayla - my e-mail address is in my profile - let me know how to get to your place and what time you want us to show up. I will probably be bringing all three kids (hard to call them kids now that they are really pretty grown up). Do you have a big area nearby they can toss a football or a frisbee? (they aren't much for talking).

I'll also bring some food if you want. My daughter loves potato salad, Kayla, so she will love you forever if you make homemade!

Farmgirl

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Burgers or hot dogs either one would work for me, although I'd lean toward a burger.

I'll also need directions to your place Kayla--Noemon at Sakeriver dot com would probably be the best place to send them.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Well, there is the street. But about half a mile from my house there is a football field and the public pool is over there, too. How old are you kids?

punwit, will you be bringing your wife and daughter? Would she be interested in swimming? (I'll call today and make sure they are open that day, but I can't imagine they wouldn't be.)

I don't care what time. Let me know what time works for y'all. One? Two? Three? The kids can always go swimming and if they want (or are allowed) I'm sure they could get some fireworks (I know there will be a stand right across the street from the pool and football field) and they could do those in the evening, while we old people sit around and talk. [Roll Eyes]

As for what to bring, I'll have what I listed and if there is something you want that isn't there, bring it. (I hate trying to figure out what I should tell people to bring.)

So, four from Farmgirl, three from punwit(?) Noemon, three here. That's 11? Anyone else I'm forgetting? Maybe just 9 if punwit can't convince his wife and daughter to come?

Tstorm, are you off at all on Saturday?

Farmgirl, I'll e-mail you in just a minute with directions.

I'll e-mail screechowl -- but I have his school (work) e-mail (I think), so I don't know if he is there this time of year.

My kids are 19,17, 15. Old. They can find something to entertain themselves with. They might choose to swim, I don't know. I'll ask them.

Sorry guys, I've been working open to close for the past few days. I keep missing this thread as I skim Hatrack. If screechowl doesn't post here today, I'll call him tomorrow. [Smile]

I"m working Saturday afternoon and evening. 1PM to 10:30PM, to be specific. Sunday, Noon to 5. I'm highly dubious of my ability to change this with my co-workers. I'll poke around and try.

Where's the smiley for working one's behind off with no social life? [Wall Bash]

Noemon, what time are you going through Kansas City? I'm trying to get John Keats a ride. I could go out and pick him up earlier in the day, but if your going through KC. . .

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Also, anyone have an idea of what time they'd like to get together?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

And beans! You can't have a BBQ without baked beans!

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Bob and Dana, are you sure you don't want to drive 4 hours for a hamburger? I mean, you've been working hard to get all moved in. You should take a break.

And Bob, really, you need to work on your profile. It still says you live in Texas. You aren't still keeping a bachelor pad there "just in case" are you? [Wink]

Crap, the reason I posted above was to ask Farmgirl a question. And then I forgot!

Farmgirl, are any of your kids artistically inclined? I need a storm cloud painted on a ceiling. That could keep them entertained for a while. [Big Grin]

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Not especially inclined in that way, exactly.

The most artistic is my oldest -- however, he is so meticulous and perfectionistic that it would take him hours just to decide how the cloud should look -- and he draws really really tiny, so I don't know how he could do anything on a ceiling! *grin*

Sorry -- that was one gift that most of my family does not possess.

Kayla, I'm not sure what time I'll be passing through KC. It all depends on when I leave Dayton and whether or not I feel alert enough to drive through the night to get to KS. Could be 5 in the morning, could be 1 in the afternoon. It probably wouldn't be good to plan on my picking him up, unfortunately, just because my arrival time is so completely up in the air.

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Kayla, I expect I'll be solo, but bearing victuals. How about an oriental salad, always good for hot summer days, and a favorite dip or two? It's not right that you bear the expense of all the food. I should pay you back for the money I left with last month anyway.

If John Keats needs a ride I also am available.

Noemon, you drink beer, right? So far it appears that there will only be three beer drinkers present unless Screechowl or John Keats imbibe. A growler or two would be plenty. Of the beers presently on tap, I would suggest the John Brown Ale or the Post Rock Pilsner. The John Brown is very good and may be available in a cask conditioned variety. If you are in the mood for more hops the Copperhead Ale is very good as well. I'm available for the beer run or people run or both. Let me know what you want me to do.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

punwit, I figure Farmgirl, Noemon and your gas bills will more than cover the food. [Wink]

Hamburgers
Hot dogs (my kid won't eat a hamburger)
Potato salad
Deviled eggs (If you don't like the potato salad, you won't like the eggs)
Baked beans
Chips and french onion dip
Brownies
Ice Cream

I'll also have ketchup, mustard, hamburger pickle chips, american cheese slices, Hellman's mayonnaise, KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce, ice, and bottled water. (I have bottles of Aqua Fina and 3 and 5 gallon jugs of water, and the ice is store bought because I just don't trust the water because it makes my ice cube/water dispenser white and it tastes like chlorine. Yes, I know I'm weird, just go with it. [Wink] )

If you let me know specifically, I can pick up some soda, otherwise we'll have diet cola of some type, root beer and a regular cola of some type. Maybe a white soda also.

So, if there is something you want that ain't on the list, bring it. You know, if you like something weird on your burgers like onions or tomatoes. I know how odd some of you people are. [Razz]

I'm not too anal-retentive, am I?

Oh, and punwit, Caleb lives in downtown KC. That's kind of out of your way, isn't it? I'm now wondering if I've remember where you live incorrectly. . .

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

I'm in Ottawa so downtown KC would not exactly be on my way but I'd be happy to provide transportation for him if he wants to attend. It might not be any more convenient for Noemon, depending on what time he comes through KC.

Saturday is out for me. I'm working 1pm-10:30pm I'll spare you the description of an under-staffed retail environment on a holiday weekend. Retail sucks. I hope you guys have a great day and enjoy the warm (ha!) weather.

Sunday and Monday evenings are a possibility, though, just let me know what's up.

Kayla -- since you are going to be using so many of your eggs with the potato salad/deviled eggs, can I bring you two dozen home-grown, organic, free-range chicken eggs as a gift?

I am available anytime but I assume that Noemon has family obligations until sometime in the mid to late afternoon. Why don't we let him tell us what works time wise for him?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of Farmgirl letting me know what time she might be coming in. Noemon can show up whenever he wants, but she's coming from quite a distance, so she might want to spend some time here. I mean, if we have dinner around 5ish, and she gets here at 4 and then has to leave at 6, it would kind of suck.

I was just wondering if she'd like to come up earlier in the day and stay a spell. Depending on what time she comes, I'll tell Caleb what time I'll get him. (we can flip to see who brings him home. [Wink] )

And drinks! What kind of drinks do you want? Going to the store tomorrow. . .

That makes sense, Kayla and btw I've never been able to flip. Can we arm wrestle instead?

About 3 hours to drive there, right?

Ivygirl got ahold of babager via IM and she says she has to work and can't come [Frown] Wish I had thought to contact her earlier.
Can we think of any other Kansas even-occasional posters that we might have missed?

Kayla -- my kids wanted me to ask what the fireworks rules/laws are in your town. If they decide to pop a few, is it legal there? (if not, we won't -- I personally think it is a huge waste of money)

FG

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Fireworks are legal here. Not in Lawrence, but in Eudora, no problem. The funny thing about Lawrence is you can buy them all over town, but you can't have them in the city limits. So, after you buy them, I'm not sure how you are supposed to get home.

But there are stands here and they can set them off. I'd forgotten how much I hated this time of year till I nearly peed my pants last night when some loud ones went off unexpectedly. (Not legal till the first! [Mad] )

punwit, I thought you meant a "flipping off" contest. And though I doubt you could beat me, mack would be the best person to learn from.

Though, at first, I wondered how hard it could possibly be to flip a stupid coin. [Confused]

Hey, I have 5 large trees and a house I would like to accidentally burn down. City park. Ha.

Though I feel the same way about fireworks, having known a guy who lost both legs in a stupid fireworks accident. But my husband and son buy stuff from around here and nothing too big and we've had really good luck. I hate the noisy ones and prefer the ones that are just pretty at night. Like the cones of flames thingies. They are like a sparkler shower. Those are really the only ones I like.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

When I was younger I'd save all year to buy fireworks. My friends and I would road trip out of state to buy fireworks that were illegal in KS, and then have massive firework wars in which, miraculously, no one was ever seriously hurt, and no houses or stretches of woods were set on fire.

Now? Meh. I could see buying a brick of jumping jacks or something, but generally I don't get around to it.

Kayla, I'll drink whatever's cool and nontoxic in reasonable quantities. Most soft drinks are fine with me, as are water, iced tea, etc.

Punwit, are you bringing a jug of FreeState beer? Copperhead's probably my favorite, but again I'm pretty flexible--anything from a cyclist to barleywine sounds good to me.

You'd be welcome, ShadowPuppet (assuming that you're either A)over 18 or B)have a parent's/guardian's permission to come). It'd be quite a drive though.

Punwit, no need to stock up on an extraordinary amount of beer on my account. I love the taste, but I'm not a big fan of the sensation of being drunk, and I'm a bit of a lightweight, so I won't have all that much--a glass or two tops.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Yeah, and anyone driving can only have a glass or two tops. [No No]

So, like I said, a six-pack?

Another question from my teens, Kayla.

Does the city park have tennis courts, and/or basketball court or anything like that if they decide to go run off some energy? Eudora looks small enough that everything should be within walking distance....

FG

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

I have no idea. I'll find out today and let you know. I do know that there are baseball fields, a football field around which there is a track, the pool, which they've tried 2 or 3 times to pass a bond issue to rebuild. . . but that is all just at the park that is a half a mile from my house. I know there is another park on the other side of town and I don't know what is over there.

My son has a basketball, if that helps.

Oh, wait! Yes, they do! I remember once I went to see my son's track meet and over by the shot put area, there are tennis courts. I remember this because someone had left a glove (I would have called it a racquetball glove, but I suppose they wear them in tennis and baseball, too) in the middle of the court and my husband, the scavenger, went and got it. [Roll Eyes] I have no idea what kind of shape the courts are in though. I will check that out today.

Kayla, I'm not bringing prepackaged beer. Free State Brewery allows you to fill half-gallon jugs. One growler (half gallon jug) is a little over 5 12 ounce pours. I thought I'd bring one or perhaps 2 growlers. The idea behind the second growler has nothing to do with quantity and everything to do with variety. We are under no obligation to drain the growlers and I take resposible drinking seriously. See ya tomorrow. [Wave]

There are tennis courts, they have nets and lights and are clear. Or so says my husband who drove by them this morning. [Smile]

punwit, excellent! Variety is good.

(sorry, didn't see that post before I posted.)

Okay, the dip is done, the potato salad is chilling, the eggs have been devil and the brownies. . . well, let's just say that if there are any left by the time you arrive, it'll be amazing. [Wink]

I haven't gotten directions from Caleb, but I've e-mailed him again.

So, are we still shooting for 3-5ish? (That's a big window.)

You pick where in that window you want me to arrive, Kayla, and we'll be there. Our leave here time is flexible.

The earlier you come, the earlier we can eat brownies. [Wink]

Caleb just e-mailed! He's bringing tabithecat with him, so he won't need a ride!

Yay! Glad Caleb can make it.

Kayla - you sure know how to get ME to show up (chocolate!). Now it is just a matter of convincing my sons... (they aren't thrilled with the idea of going somewhere where there will be a bunch of people they don't know, and mostly we will be sitting around talking. But I think I can give them enough incentive....) [Smile]

Well, they'll have my 14 year-old to kick around. And they really can go off and play elsewhere. The pool will be open, the tennis courts, the football field. . . there are fireworks stands all over the place.

Do they like climbing trees? We could put them to work if we borrow a 20 foot ladder from my husband's work to get them started up the tree. I have some dead limbs that need trimming. [Wink]

Or, they could just climb to the top and drop a tape measure. I'd love to know how tall it is.

And there's always video games, and we have about a thousand movies. I can't imagine they'll be bored.

Actually, Steven (my oldest) would love this. And you probably won't need the ladder. (He'll stand on top of his brother)

Yeah -- I know there are plenty of things to keep them from feeling like that have to talk to all the adults. They are really old enough to be self-entertaining. I just need to convince them of it.

So far -- they aren't putting up very much argument. I think it will all work out fine.

Okay, tabithecat has to be back in KC around 6ish for a baseball game, though why anyone would want to go to a Royals game is beyond me. [Roll Eyes]

So, the earlier you get here, the more you can chat with Caleb and Tab.

punwit, Noemon, do you have a general time in mind for when you might be showing up? Caleb is thinking they'll be here around 1 or 2.

I'll be here all day. [Wink]

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Oh, wait, Noemon is already on his way here, isn't he? Or is he leaving after work (5)?

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

I'll shoot for about 1 or 2 and no later than 3.

thanks much for the invite

but I'm working all weekend [Frown]

but if there's another get together some time
I'd be delighted to join

We'll make sure there is another one. How else could you become real?

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

We'll have to come out there sometime, ShadowPuppet, for Dodge City days. We'll make punwit wear a cowboy hat and get duded up.

I'm just getting ready to leave now Kayla--just logged on to get your directions. You never did send me your phone number, did you? If you start wondering where I am, feel free to call me.

I'm hoping to get there on the earlier side of the 3-5 continuum, but we'll see.

How late do you guys think thing's will go?

Not that I'll get a chance to read this thread again before I get there, probably. Ha!

I've got quite a funny story about something along those lines, Farmgirl. Remind me tomorrow to share it with ya.

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Noemon, we'll go as late as possible.

I figure we should try to talk tabithecat out of leaving to go to the Royals game. She won the tickets at work and has never gone to a game, but it's the Royals, and we're Hatrackers. Barring that, I can just give Caleb a ride home later.
