My monitor is acting all weird now cause my cat just vomited in it. She likes to sit up there while I'm online, cause it's warm, and so she can be a part of things. And lately she's been nauseated a lot, poor baby. Dr. George and I are trying to get her well but he's pretty sick too so he hasn't come to see her yet this time to give her any specifically anti-nausea drugs, or anything to combat the inflammation in her bowel, which is the cause, we think. All I've been doing is giving her subcutaneous fluids when she gets dehydrated. She's still eating and drinking, and doesn't seem to be vomiting up everything she eats. So I hope she'll be okay soon.

Anyway, as it happens, she's done that before, a long while back, and the monitor survived it. I wonder if it will on this occasion.

The picture gets all distorted for a while, then gradually returns to normal.

Does anyone understand what is going on actually when random liquids are poured in the ventilation slots of a CRT? Is it just that a sudden temperature difference on the outside of the picture tube can affect the magnetic fields that direct the electrons? Is it going to die?

This is awful! I can't get a flat screen display cause where would Drive By sleep? Do they even sell CRT type monitors anymore?

I'm pretty sure they do.

But if they don't, you can buy a flat-screen, and we'll trade you. [Big Grin]

Yeah, you can still get CRTs. LCDs are growing in popularity, but I still think the majority of monitor sales are for CRTs. I can't help you with the problem itself, though.

Ah, it's still alive over an hour later so I guess it's going to survive it once again. [Smile]

Drive By also seems to be doing okay.

Glad to hear they still sell CRT type monitors. The makers of flat screen displays don't seem to realize sufficiently the importance of warm horizontal surfaces in monitor design.

Man. I thought this was going to be a thread about a female lizard...

Wierd.

P.S. I prefer CRTs, especially for gaming. They are not hard to find, and you could pick one up at Best Buy if you wanted to.

Tatiana, I don't know about the monitors, but your first sentence should start a story.

Will B, I'm glad you liked it, or I hope I may so take your words.

What should happen next? In my mind the entire plot of this story is not unfolding. Does it in yours?

Make that line go alone with "There was a lot of vomiting in the garden last night."

anne kate, you'd be a person I'd ASK about the crt/liquid thing!

Tatiana, back when I had two cats and a monitor instead of a laptop, my little one, Tellulah, used to sleep on the monitor. Oberon tried, but he was too bad and caused it to shake, so I booted him off.

But, because of the way I had the monitor angled, combined with the downslope of the monitor, Tellulah would fall asleep on the nice, warm surface and then, in an unsuspecting moment, would twitch or otherwise move, and blam! There she goes, sliding off the monitor. She'd grab at it with her claws! But avast, she inevitably always wound up a heap on the floor below. [ROFL]

(I'm so mean. I laughed every single time.)

quid, everything here is arranged so as to provide maximum convenience and safety for cats. [Smile] I face my monitor as far down as it will go, so as to provide a more horizonal surface up there for her. (It also keeps down the glare from the windows and overhead lights, so it's a win/win deal.)

Anyway, sometimes she still falls very deeply asleep up there and starts to slip off. Then she comes to with a start and catches herself. After she fell once or twice, the way you describe with Tellulah, I changed it like that so she wouldn't. Also I back the monitor into a corner so she's got a little more security from having the walls right there.

Yep, mine are definitely spoiled! [Smile]

Update on sick cat, since I know that all of Drive By's many fans and well-wishers will want to know.

She got much worse last night and this morning. She quit eating entirely and continued to vomit again and again throughout the night and morning. I was very worried about her, but kept her from getting dehydrated by giving her subcutaneous Ringers fluid. Then her ministering angel, Dr. George (I swear that man is a holy seer and saint) came and examined her and gave her more fluids with the addition of a cocktail of drugs consisting of an anti-nausea medication, an anti-inflammatory, some vitamins, and a long acting anti-biotic. He can't tell from palpating what is causing the trouble. That would take lots of blood tests, maybe biopsies, etc. Her bowels were not thickened this time and weren't painful on palpation. Neither did her liver, kidneys, or gall bladder feel abnormal or cause pain on palpation. Her stomach was painful but he said that was to be expected no matter what the source of the nausea. Also that nausea can have many causes.

Unfortunately, he also said that it was about time for the anti-inflammatory to have worn off from the last time she was nauseated. So it's possible that she is showing signs (worse this time) of some underlying problem that we have not found or addressed. So far we're just treating symptoms.

On the other hand, this bout started with conjunctivitis, so I'm hoping it was a viral or bacterial infection that kicked it off again, and that if she gets over the acute stage, she might be fine now. We must wait and see.

Right now she's sleeping on top of the monitor again. She feels better, though still nauseated some, and hasn't vomited again since Dr. George was here. (You can tell if they're nauseated by the fact that they lick their lips a lot.) She ate a little this evening, ignoring the turkey baby food which Dr. George recommended and eating her regular Purina Cat Chow instead. So far that has stayed down.

Drive By wants to thank all her many fans and admirers for all their prayers and well-wishes. She's overwhelmed by the flowers and cards and touched by the warm show of support. (Recordings of Drive By singing duets with Trent Reznor, Thom Yorke, and others are available to her fans through email.)

Best start I can make:

quote:
My monitor is acting all weird now cause my cat just vomited in it.

I didn't know monitor lizards could make noise, but it's croaking and shivering -- sort of like the noise a turtle makes when it's going into its shell. Usually it just sits there and looks unimpressed. The cat is quietly sitting in its favorite sunbeam, licking its paws as though nothing had happened. I swear, it did it on purpose.

Good luck to the real cat ...
