On Tuesday morning I’ll get in a car and head to Provo Utah to begin my missionary service for my Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On my mission of two years I will have access to e-mail (but not my current address), and certainly to snail-mail, but not to Hatrack, or any other portion of the web.

I’m announcing this now in case someone wants to say something or ask me a question before I leave. I’m not sure what any of those things would be, but what the heck, here’s your chance. [Smile] As you would imagine, I’ll be pretty busy before I leave, but I’ll check e-mail and, to a lesser extent, be on Hatrack.

If anyone wants to write to me while I’m on my mission I’d of course love to hear from you! [Smile] I’ve given my address to Kat, and I think she’ll kind of be in control of it. I don’t want it posted for obvious reasons, but if anyone wants it, an e-mail to me for the next few days, or to Kat should get it for you. [Cool] My policy is I will write back anyone who writes me (meaning, I’m no initiating anything, there’s just no way I would remember to).

Have a smash without me Hatrack! [Big Grin]

Hobbes [Smile]

I just signed up here tonight and wasn't going to post anything (following the proper protocol of lurking for new forums) until I saw your post. Have a wonderful mission: you'll do great. I hope you are going to post a similar good-bye at Nauvoo (I just checked and didnn't see one yet), I know everyone over there would want to say farewell as well!

All the best!

My mission was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Both the highs and the lows. Treasure it all.

Hobbes, I am always so proud and awed to see a young man so thrilled to go on a mission. I'm probably going to miss you, even though I don't usually miss people who leave message boards I frequent, but I'll do my best to still be here when you get back. I will make an effort to write you, though I'm not the best about that kind of thing. E-mail is much better for me because things actually stay in my inbox until they're replied to, as opposed to being carried all over the apartment by little hands or shredded by a cat. Also, my life is going to be a bit hectic for the next few months, maybe more. But even if I don't write you much, know that I care about you, and that if there's anything you need and can't get (along the lines of spices or something), write me and ask, and I'll do my best to get it to you. (((hugs))) (You haven't been set apart yet, have you? Oops. Well, I think virtual hugs are okay, even if you have.) I'll be thinking of you and wishing you luck, and I'll pray for you now and then. [Smile] It's been an honor getting to know you. You're a good man.

Annie is very lucky. [Wink]

Hobbes, I sent an email asking for your address (in case you miss it somehow and see this). Good luck on your mission! You'll be such an awesome missionary, and the new "Preach My Gospel" system is fantastic. The spirit I feel with the newest missionaries is stronger than ever before. Raising the bar and the change to "Preach My Gospel" has really made a powerful difference. They say that even though there are fewer missionaries, they are more effective so it more than makes up, and the rate of baptisms is even higher. I expect it will be an amazing mission experience for you. I wish it were I who were going. Maybe someday I can.

I think the change in the missionaries is being felt throughout the whole church. It's strengthening and lifting our wards and branches, as well as gathering in new converts. I feel so privileged to be a part of the work that our Heavenly Father is directing here on earth. I ordered the "Preach My Gospel" book and have been reading and studying it, and going out on team-ups. My small way of taking part. [Smile] I feel sure you will love the whole experience. I'm so proud of you and happy for you!

My only advice: If you can't get along with your companion, you can't get much work done. Be friendly, open, and very forgiving.

Or more directly: Spokane Washington Mission, which is Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, a small bit of Western Montana, and tiny, tiny, tiny portion of Canada.

I'm still going to suicide. I stopped myself until now just so I can hear the one and only concert that ever mattered to me, but now that I've heard it, I have no reason to live besides Hobbes.

Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :

Are you serious?

Posted by Haloed Silhouette (Member # 8062) on :

No. I can't kill myself when I still have the chance of converting to LDS and preaching with Hobbes.

Posted by Haloed Silhouette (Member # 8062) on :

But thanks for your concern. I must've phrased it too seriously...

Suicide is, I think, one of the topics that it's not okay to joke about on Hatrack. There's a story behind that someone more involved might be willing to hash out for you, but it's good to know that it's generally not an amusing topic for people.

Posted by Haloed Silhouette (Member # 8062) on :

And death generally is? *Thinks back to Tom's ridiculous joke in the "Danzig is Dead" thread.*

whoa.... imagine the system updates that are going to be piled up waiting for him...

Man, I could actually leave work right now and drive over to the MTC where I might even find Hobbes getting ready to officially start his mission. Don't really know what he looks like, and he would have no idea who I am, but hey...

ooh DO it AFR!

Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :

I'm not dressed for it.

I DO know what he looks like from pictures, but I don't think I could pick him out from the enormous crowd that always congregates in front of the MTC.

That, and finding parking.

Actually, wait--MTC day is Wednesday, isn't it? So maybe I can plan a bit better and greet him there tomorrow.

Does anyone know what time he's going in?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

His last name is towards the end of the alphabet, so I'll bet he goes in around 4:00.

6'2", bright-red hair, halo - he couldn't be that hard to find!

Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :

Well, yeah, there's the halo and the little ray of sunshine that will be following him around.

4:00? You think? It seems so late.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I'm a "P", and I think I went in at 2:30. Doesn't the last go in at 4:00? Maybe 3:30?

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Lots of halos there, I bet. [Smile] <will miss Hobbsey> Wow, he was 14 when he first started posting! <sniffs and wipes a tear> Our little tiger is all grown up now.

Well, I missed him. I shouldn't leave for so long at a stretch. I hope Hobbesy has a wonderful time. Where's he going? Does anyone know?

Spokane, WA

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

What I want to know is what teeny weeny part of Canada is in that mission?
