Spanish woman ignites daughter's rapist after being taunted by offender

Yes, she did break the law, but I'm finding it really difficult to be that upset by it.

I thought you were against the death penalty, Trevor? [Wink]

By "later succumbed to injuries," does the article mean that he died? That, in other words, she walked into the bar in cold blood, poured gasoline on him, and burned him to death? While he was halfway through serving a sentence for the crime in question?

I'm not a big fan of that particular approach.

Yes, that's what that means.

The rapist Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, who later succumbed to injuries, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejuzar, 50 km south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.
[Confused]

Three-day pass?

*snicker* I'm the one who keeps quoting a box of shotgun shells every time the issue comes up.

See what you get for taunting an emotional woman?

Men may be stronger and beat women more often, but you gotta admit, when women act out, they do it with flair.

I think she used a match, not a flare, Kayla.

The moron was stupid enough to taunt his victim's mother and, I'm assuming, wasn't bright enough to run when she turned up in the same bar and soaked him in an unknown fluid.

Being soaked in gasoline is certainly more colorful than the volley of small arms fire some Americans favor, but I think a similar reaction might be had anywhere in the world.

Seems like a compelling reason to not issue "day passes" to criminals convicted of violent crimes, at the very least.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I wouldn't have thought this was something they were short of reasons not to do.

I'm trying to picture how this might have taken place.

Idiot yells "How's your daughter?" to her, enters bar. She leaves, returns with gasoline in a bottle and a match, and walks into the bar. The crowd parts before her like the Red Sea. She walks up to the guy, who's sitting at the bar and probably too drunk to know what's coming. She dumps bottle, lights match. We see flames, screaming, etc... lady walks out.

Really, Dag. I mean, on what planet do we think it's a good idea to issue 3 day liberty passes to violent criminals? [Confused]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yeah, that struck me as monumentally stupid, too.

Not to mention letting him loose in the town where he committed the crime in the first place.

Hmmmm, I.......Wow. That just....yeah. I knew I forgot the marshmellows.

I think, wading through Dagonee's double (triple?) negatives he agrees with you Belle. [Smile]

I have no way of ascertaining the veracity of this report and in no way would I defend a rapist, BUT has anyone considered this scenario: The rapist is walking down the street and sees the mother of his victim. He suffers a moment of remorse and inquires as to the well being of the woman's daughter. Being socially inept and boorish he fails to understand that this isn't right time, place or person for this inquiry.

I feel for the woman and her daughter but we are taking at face value that it (his question) was actually a taunt when there is always the possiblity (however remote) that it might have been remorse.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Hell, even if it wasn't remorse, I'm still of the opinion that she shouldn't've burned him to death.

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Tom, I agree with you. I was just introducing an alternate scenario for those that may have identified with the mother.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

imogen, I knew he did, I was just reiterating how ridiculous it was. [Smile]

I think we're all pretty much agreed that 3 day furloughs for violent criminals doesn't sound all that smart.

Perhaps she did not intend to burn him to death, just to burn him a helluva lot and have some revenge. Eight years for raping my daughter seems awfully meager to me.

I wonder if she could truly be said to have been in cold blood? Could temporary insanity be an issue? I can certainly imagine myself going nuts if my daughter's rapist, out on a day pass from the eight-year sentence being served for raping my daughter strolled by my home and mocked us both. If that's what happened.

Posted by Olivetta (Member # 6456) on :

Yes, Rakeesh. I can totally see that. I'm also willing to bet that her blood was definitely NOT cold at the time.

Truth is (as a person who has experienced powerful, irrational rages) I can see myself doing exactly the same thing under those circumstances. Except , if someone did that to one of my children and showed up and taunted me about it during a period of time when I thought he was in prison... I'd hope he'd linger for years in burn ward, enduring multiple skin grafts that would leave his anatomically functional as a ken doll.

But that's just me. [Smile]

This is really horrifying...but if anyone ever raped our daughter, I could see my husband doing that.

I don't know, murder is murder as far as I'm concerned. But I have a hard time really wishing any sort of punishment on the woman given the circumstances.

Had he not died, I would have said case closed. But some sort of punishment must be administered, though not harsh. Given the circumstances, and her condition, some sort of assault charge maybe.

I can't believe he taunted the girl's mother.

Honestly - I disapprove of murder and vigilantism, but I don't think this guy was any loss.
