So, Raia is returning to Bloomington next week, and we (she and I) have decided that it would be fun to have a barbecue and gather all Bloomington hatrackers and other folks who can make the trip.

This could, of course, happen any time that's convenient in July (or even early August).

We could make it an informal weekend-type event, if lots of out-of-towners come, as well.

So post here, if you'd be interested in such an event, and let us know when good dates would be.

I'm interested. [Wink]

Megan: [Kiss] Thanks for posting this!

Posted by imenimok (Member # 7679) on :

I'm interested, but the only way I could make it is if it's on a Saturday and I happen to not get scheduled for work that day. In other words, don't count me in on the actual planning, but if it turns out I can make it, I will probably show up.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Ok...I think we're almost definitely aiming for a Saturday, since that'll cause the least grief in scheduling for most people.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Possible Saturday dates:

July 9
July 16
July 23
July 30
August 6
August 13

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I'm out july 16 through 30th (but not out of town, I'll be stuck finishing 4-H stuff, and practically living at fair.)

But the idea sounds wonderful, and if you convince me hard enough, I might be able to abbandon fair for a few hours to come hang out with you guys (this may require more than just raia and megan since I can see them as often as I'd like).

Do you have any idea's where, stuff like that (I'm getting too involved and I'll regret it, shuts up [Wink] )

I'm thinking we could do the Bryant Park thing that didn't happen when plaid was here. I'll get one of those spiffy portable grills (which I've been wanting to get anyway), and we could work out who brings what, etc., once we have a date and a tentative attendance list.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Sounds fabulous!

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Bryan Park is fabulous, and usually works if you pick your time right, but once we pick a date, someone should run by and look at the paper on the wall of the shelter house (it's usually up for a month), with the list of when it's rented, just to make sure, but there are at least two shelter houses (I think there could be three).

Also if you're buying the black round grill that's really flat, and fairly cheap, buy extra charcoal, the stuff they give you doesn't last long at all, but it's an ok grill, if you're looking at something else, ignore me.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

The one I saw at Lowe's was navy, but I'm not really looking for any specific grill. We just need a new grill, and a hatrack-con is as good excuse as any. [Big Grin]

The 9th is complicated... and there's one more there that might be difficult, I'm just not sure which one it is yet. Either the 30th or the 6th. I have performances that day, whichever one it is.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

The 16th is the day after Harry Potter comes out, so many people could still be locked up reading the book. I will have had my 4-H cat show that morning and the leader probably will have pissed me off, so I may or may not be nice enough to be around hatrackers.

Posted by Stray (Member # 4056) on :

I can't make it August 6th, but I'd love to attend any of the other days [Smile]

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I want to come but I can't make it the 16th, 23th, or the 30th(My Birthday!). I may not be able to make it the 13th either, but I will know for sure on that one later.

ok we have no day that works for everyone, it either affects raia, stray, or allegra (I'm not counting myself because at this point, I'll be in town the whole time, just busy, though august could be bad)

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Really, the 9th is the only one that's really complicated for me... the others just because I have a show in the evening (I can't remember which of the two dates I mentioned is the show). If we do an afternoon thing, it shouldn't really be a problem. I'll get back to you on which day the show is actually on.

And Jonny, you're very sweet. Thanks. [Smile]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Bump to see if anyone else from outside the Bloomington area is interested in coming. We can always do another day of the week, if we're only going to have Bloomington hatrackers (like a Friday afternoon or something).

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Once you guys pick a day, I might make the trip up - expenses allowing. If I don't pencil something in early, something always comes up to fill the void - usually work.

Getting out of town for a weekend sounds perfect.

Of course, hanging out with Megan and meeting the teenyboppers that constitute the Indiana clump could be fun too. [Big Grin]

If we schedule it in early August that would give the people from out of town time to plan. It would also give me time to get back from Europe.

I can make it most days that aren't friday or sunday, and even some days that are.

So, we seem to be liking either the 6th or the 13th of August, though we'll lose Stray if we go with the 6th.

Thanks Stray for e-mailing me! Our computer is only half-fixed, so I'm still on only about once a week.

August 13th I think works for me as well. At least, I don't see it not working for me. Are there any objections to kids at this get-together? I might want to bring the kids if not. Just post and I'll see it eventually. Thanks!

The potential conflict that I was anticipating is now confirmed to be a different week, so barring a last-minute surprise, the Goodlets and I are in! We'll probably want to stay overnight just because the younger one isn't always too reliable with long car rides after long days out, so ideas in that regard would be appreciated. We do not have any kind of camping gear.

I'll wait till we get closer with regard to food contributions, because otherwise I'm bound to forget.

Goody Scrivener and goodlets
blacwolve
Alcon
Grisha (maybe)
fugu
Space Opera and Mr. Opera
JT Stryker

Goody, what kind of budget are you looking at? If push comes to shove, you guys could sleep in our guest bedroom, but I'm not 100% sure how my dogs would do with the Goodlets (what are the Goodlets' ages?). Otherwise, I can do some looking around for other options for you.

For now, I think it would be best to discuss general food options. I have in mind a menu of burgers (both veggie and non), hotdogs (possibly veggie too?), and basic picnic-type food. Menu suggestions would be fantastic, but until we get close, I'm not even going to worry about a list of who brings what.

Posted by Alcon (Member # 6645) on :

I can bring hotdogs, if this is still in Bryan park we can probably hijack one of the grills.

We don't have an exact time yet, but I was thinking mid-afternoon-ish. Still, I'm fairly flexible. If you (or anyone else, for that matter) have a time that would work best, let us know. [Smile]

Absolutely! I guess maybe that wasn't clear from my earlier post; when I say volunteer to bring something, I meant, post it here! [Smile]

I'll keep a tally, and nudge people in the direction of things that would be good, once we've got more volunteers.

If she is coming, she'll be riding with the Goodlets and me. One of the dogs, at least, is quite large, and hasn't been around children at all, but at 8 and 12, they should be ok (I hope). I have a futon in the guest room that serves as a bed, plus floor space, and another couch in my office that one of you guys could sleep on, if so inclined. I will warn you about one thing, though: I'm probably in the running for one of the worst housekeepers ever. I'll do my best to tidy up before y'all get here, though. [Big Grin]

Darn. [Frown] I'll be coming from the southern Indiana/Louisville area - we're about 40 minutes away from the city.

I have been neglecting this thread. I won't be able to make it. I am working. You guys have fun, though.

Nooo! [Frown]

Raia - what are you going to be doing in Greencastle? And for how long? I live in Greencastle.

We should meet up and go to Walmart or something. [Big Grin]

please forgive me for not reading the whole thread, but where is this, and what time of day?

also, Goody, I'm glad your kids are willing to protect my hands from Raia's puppy.

It's in Bryan Park, but I'm not sure which shelter or what time.

Posted by fiazko (Member # 5812) on :

I just saw your post about not bowing out, Raia. I'm sorry. [Smile] I'll try to make the next one.

You live in Greencastle?! I'm going to school there! I start DePauw on the 20th!

(edit: Stray, that's ok! [Smile] I was semi-joking.)

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

Raia - that's awesome! I'm a junior at DePauw.
Email or IM me sometime (profile) about your classes and where you're living and everything!

I'll be helping out with international oriantation, which starts next weekend, although I'm not a mentor for the first-years. If you want help moving into your dorm on the 20th, just ask. I should be done with my research by then, so I'll just be lazing around the campus (and moving into my apartment, I suppose).

This is great! Another Hatracker at DePauw. [Smile]

Megan, I'm sending you email regarding tomorrow night. Address, directions, what I should bring to contribute to Saturday breakfast (and I won't take no for an answer on that one!). Oh, and my cell phone number, too.

I will NOT have computer access tonight when I leave work until tomorrow when I get back to the office. There was a substation fire yesterday that knocked out somewhere upwards of 30,000 customers (depending on whose story you believe) and according to one news site, there are still about 11K in the dark as of about noon today, including one of my down-the-street neighbors who was quoted as saying that ComEd told her that our service won't be restored until sometime on Friday. Not happy here. I hope my food survives...

oops, sidetracked there...

Anyway, since I have no electricity (and this same fire seems to have severely hampered both cable and Dish Network service in a much larger area so my mom has no internet either), my only surfing and mail access is from the office. So I won't be able to reply till tomorrow morning.

What time are we doing this again? Was it ever actually decided? I've been assuming it will be early afternoon, but it would be good to know a specific hour (and location).

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

We never decided a time; I suggest 2 PM. Any objections?

As for location...I was thinking the north end of Bryant Park?

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Hearing no objections...going once...going twice...

Oh, and all you people who haven't claimed a food item to bring--you better show up with something, or I'll sic Raia on you. [Big Grin]

JT, you, I'll beat up myself. How bout that? [Wink]

If i make it, i will bring something, if not...

*giggle* Tyler, you doubt my abilities to frighten people? [Wink]

I doubt your ability to frighten people!

You know, you're really not helping raise my authority level any higher, Imale dearest. [Razz]

Raia, face it. You just aren't scary. You're too sweet [Razz]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

I think Raia could be scary, if pressed.

And I hearby decree that this shindig will begin at 2 PM in the north section of Bryant Park. Look for me with a grill, Goody, and the two goodlets in tow. [Big Grin]

*pat pat* True authority shouldn't require the ability to inspire fear. Or at least you'd better hope it doesn't . . . [Big Grin]

*bumpity*

I'm not sure what I'll bring, yet, but I'll bring something.

Posted by Alcon (Member # 6645) on :

I can bring a frisbee disc... and that about it I'm afriad [Frown] I'm on my own again this week and there is little to be had food wise in this house.

Posted by Stray (Member # 4056) on :

I'm bringing some drinks in addition to the veggies & dip, but they're not exactly cold. If someone were to bring a cooler with ice, or plastic cups and ice, that would be most helpful.

Daniel, you need to find yourself a source of income [Razz]

i wish i could have made it, i had to work late.

Raia-con was fun! People played frisbee and Apples to Apples, and we all sweated tons and tons. The Goodlets were declared real on the condition that they make screen names one day. Many things fit for the OOC thread were said. [Big Grin]

SO, the 26th is a Friday, right? Let us know when things are confirmed, and we'll set up a time and place to wine and dine you. [Smile]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

It WAS fun! Thanks to all involved! [Smile]

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

The Goodlets are still wiped out. We hit a nasty storm almost the instant we got back on 37 (well, actually a bit before) that stayed with us all the way to 465. Seems we decided to tear down JUST in time!

It was great meeting everyone! Apples to Apples was fun - especailly that last game <kicks fugu from under the table....> And I think I'll be sprouting feathers soon since we'll be eating chicken for days and days.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Yeah, I was thinking about you guys last night; I'm glad you guys made it back ok. It got REALLY nasty here for a while.

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

We drove about 30 mph through that and silently swore at the idiots doing significantly more than that. I had as much trouble seeing behind me as ahead, so I never saw them coming at me. There were LOTS of people pulled off to the side, and if it had been any worse, we would have joined them.

Oh, and now it's a whopping 75 degrees here at home. Wouldn't it just figure? LOL

Goody we must have met you on 37, we drove into it about martinsville, but called my dad and he said it wasn't raining in bloomington yet.

Glad you all had fun.
