Have you heard it before?

quote:
I backed my car into a cop car the other day Well he just drove off sometimes life's ok
I ran my mouth off a bit too much oh what can i say Well you just laughed it off it was all ok

And we'll all float on ok

*dances around office*

I had never heard it before, but a friend who is into music gave me a copy to listen to. I love the lead singer's bizarre voice - it's rough and intense and happy. I love it.

Modest Mouse rocks! Try "Wild Pack of Family Dogs" next.

I've loved Modest Mouse for years. Uncomfortably personal lyrics, that incessantly bending guitar, and a lead singer with a serious lisp.....

These sound like bad qualities in a band, but in fact they are great qualities.

Their best cd is The Moon And Antarctica. Everyone buy it.

That song has been popular for over 6 months now Kat. In fact, it was actually overplayed on the radio here, and they only play it now and then because of that. They also have another single released which got the madatory overplaying, called Ocean Breathes Salty, which I like even better. [Smile]

I know Xav, but I don't listen to the radio and I don't keep up. Music is one area where I'm happily on the very tail end - it's new to me. I still love it.

Did you like it?

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Where have you been, Katie? Like Xavier said, that song has been played to death on the radio already. I liked it when it was new, but now it's just meh.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

*sigh* Y'all suck. All bored and jaded ennuiers go smoke behind the gym - I want to play.

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Don't let us rain on your parade kat!

Yeah, I like Modest Mouse a lot, and that song was in my head for a month straight. When its on the radio now I don't get that excited, because I've heard it so many times.

I'm not sick of Ocean Breathes Salty, because they didn't play it as much as Float On. I think its a better song too [Smile] .

quote:
Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in.
In my head, in my heart, in my soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so.

Edit: and why don't you listen to the radio? There's so much you are missing!

Weird, I listened to that CD on repeat last night especially that song and was singing the lyrics to people on IM. *giggle*

[Razz] I heard it for the first time last week. It can still make me happy. Who's laughing now?

This is your fault, really. You've neglected my musical education.

Xav: I don't listen to the radio because...I hate advertising. I can avoid it in most other art forms, but I'm too broke to buy music and I'm not willing to listen to commercials to get it for free.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

I just flip around stations until I find one playing music.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

This is why you must change the station religiously. Also, have you ever tried internet radio? Launchcast still has commercials, but they come one or two at a time instead of in ten-minute blocks. I've discovered lots of good stuff through Launch.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I find a combination of Internet radio and channel-changing avoids commercials nicely.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Well...it just seems like there is so much to know. I know a little about music, but only classical, opera, and a little bit of 60s folk music (a la A Mighty Wind) from my dad.

It just looks like so much work. Flip the channel, figure out what to listen to, replace in a month or so because it gets old. Reading about it doesn't help because there's no attached sound files, such a short shelf life. There are almost 30,000 music CDs published every year, and I like almost all genres so I wouldn't want to specialize. What an overwhelming hobby!

I actually prefer "The View" from the same CD. And I was really glad they re-ran the SNL when Liam Neeson hosted, as I had no clue who Modest Mouse was the first time I saw the show.

You poor dear. [Wink] I'm half-tempted to copy my collection over to a hard drive and mail it to you. Do you have a free IDE connector?

I don't know what that is, but we got a new laptop for work with all the bells and whistles. Is that a standard bell and/or whistle?

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Um, no. IDE is the type of connection that typical desktop hard drives use. You won't have one, let alone room in your laptop to install the drive. You'd need a USB hard drive.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Ah. Sadly, I'm not going to buy an external hard drive just for Katie. [Smile] I might consider buying an enclosure, though, if I can find one on sale. *laugh*

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Aww...thanks for the thought, though. [Smile]

See?! This music thing is so much work! And expensive.\

My other favorite song from this CD: The First Time by Roberta Flack. Is this well known, too?

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Why don't you just burn it to DVD then?

Posted by Architraz Warden (Member # 4285) on :

I'm more fond of The World at Large and Ocean Breathes Salty than Float On, but Modest Mouse to me is an all-around enjoyable band. It's been a good year or so for alternative music, with the most recent Modest Mouse, Muse, and Beck (if you can actually classify him as anything) albums coming out.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

"Why don't you just burn it to DVD then?"

*blush*
My music collection would require about 25 DVDs.

Lately, I've been grooving to the latest from The Decemberists, The White Stripes, and Jet. Get Thee Behind Me, Satan, in particular, is just a solid album.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

107.5 gig?

Rediculous.

Either you have it all encoded in oog or you seriously need to consider whether or not you really need the collected works of Tiny Tim.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

*laugh* Tiny Tim is not represented in my Media Library. [Smile]

But, yeah, it's 109GB at the moment. Mostly mid-to-high-quality WMA, which is another reason why I don't want to just burn her an audio CD or two. *grin* Although I'm half-tempted to make her a mix, now that I know how enthusiastic she is about Modest Mouse.

Since my PC is also my stereo and DVD player, I tend to rip any CD I buy and any DVD I feel like watching frequently to my hard drive, mainly for convenience; this allows me to store the actual media in my basement and only haul it out for car rides. Disk space is cheap; I'm spanning across two 300GB WDs.

Good heavens. How many CDs do you own?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

*delighted* Tom, if you're willing, I'd love a CD. I have no idea what's out there, and I like about everything.

Okay, now playing: Airport, by Guster. Does that song mean anything to anyone? I really like it. Driving, grinding guitar, and a poignant voice by the lead singer.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Jon Boy, I'm afraid I can't answer that question without really, really humiliating myself. *blush* Let's just say that a wall of my basement is dedicated to media storage.

Katie, I love Guster's "Airport Song"! Listen for the ping pong balls at the end. And if you like that, I recommend checking into everything else by them.

Tom: I'm just trying to make myself feel better about my collection of 100 or so CDs. Of course, my last roommate had well over 300, I think, and my roommate before that had well over 200 DVDs. But an entire wall? That's just shameful. *shakes head sadly*

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I heard them. [Smile]

*sigh* Am I really that clueless about it? I hadn't ANY of the songs on this CD before, except for the MoTown ones, and even those were covers by Joan Osbourne from Standing in the Shadows of MoTown.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

24 by um....I don't know. Switch On? *googles* Switchfoot.

Not a song about Jack Bauer, although that would be nice too.
quote:
Life is not what I thought it was
Twenty-four hours ago
Still I'm singing 'Spirit,
take me up in arms with You'
And I'm not who I thought I was
Twenty-four hours ago

Hey...is that Christian rock? Oh, horrors! I guess I do like absolutely everything, when it's done well. I like this song.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Yes, Switchfoot is a Christian rock band. "New Way to be Human" is a great song by them.

I was thinking about that song (Float On) today. I'm like you and don't listen to the radio so if it weren't for a friend I wouldn't have known about it! A friend of mine has The Moon and Antarctica and it's pretty good, I haven't heard any other stuff by them though.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

If you like Modest Mouse, try Franz Ferdinand.

I was stuck on MM for about 48 hours until a friend gave me her FF cd, then I was hooked on that for quite awhile.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

I've found that generally, when I get really hooked on a song right away, I get tired of it pretty quickly.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

That's the plan. Otherwise it will drive me crazy.

Hey Ya still holds the record for a single song (3 days of continuous play), although the soundtrack to The Hunchback of Notre Dame (don't laugh - it's fabulous) stayed in my CD player the longest (over a year).

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

This is one example where it's much better to buy an album than listen to a single on the radio. Float On is a great song, but it sounds even better when played immediately after The World At Large. Much like Santana's No One To Depend On or Alan Parsons' Eye In the Sky (among others), it's an excellent culmination of what the band has been working up to with the preceding song, and it just doesn't work quite as well as a single.

I agree with the following two statements from this thread: The Moon and Antarctica is MM's best album, and Franz Ferdinand's first disc is fantastic.

And I'm glad to hear that Tom has a bigger CD collection than I do. I'm close to 60 GB of 128mb/s mp3s (ripped from CDs, not downloaded), and as proud as I am of the collection, sometimes I feel like I'm getting a bit carried away. But if it's good enough for Tom, I guess I'm okay. [Smile]

katharina-

The Disney cartoon?

I find myself singing "Out There" ALL the time.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Yep. [Smile] My favorite is Heaven's Light/Hellfire. It's rather intense for a disney cartoon, but it was during that scene that I knew I loved the movie. It's a depiction of the best and the darkest. I also liked that Esmerelda didn't end up with either. For both Quasi and Frollo, she wasn't real, but a catalyst for change.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Katie, you'd like the Zephyr Song by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I tried listening to the radio this morning, and I now remember the real reason I don't do it.

Oh my STARS, there is so much CRAP out there!!

In thirty minutes, I heard maybe one song that I liked that I hadn't heard before, and it was on a country station! Hatrack, I listened to "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul! AAAAA!!

NOT worth it. I believe that I'm missing the occasional fabulous song, but I am also missing a huge volume of really, really bad music. I'm very okay with this.

*runs back to her Rosemary Clooney CD*

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Maybe you're just listening to the wrong stations.

Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :

try launch radio, you get to hear music you've never heard before as well as stuff you love. And you get to rate songs which means the stuff you like is more likely to come up.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I cruised the whole, freaking dial. Dallas has an appalling number of stations, and they are of the following formats:

[Mad] I like everything, but not any one thing all the time. If I were to pick any one thing, it wouldn't be any of the above.

Hmmm...music is not on my list of things that I'm willing shell out a lot of cash for. Launch is internet, right? I need music mostly for the car, where that doesn't help.

Posted by TL (Member # 8124) on :

I don't listen to the radio either. Listening to the radio is bad advice, in my opinion. Radio sucks. They *occasionally* play something good, like Modest Mouse, but most of the time they don't.

It's much better to just listen to tapes and cd's, that way you know you'll hear good music, and it isn't just a crap shoot.

You buy any Modest Mouse discs yet?

Or, um, download 'em?

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

"See?! This music thing is so much work! And expensive."

Such untruth, Kat!

Live music downloadation is where it's at, and it's free. (or cheap, anyway)

Also, if you can get to the Austin City Limits fest this fall, you should really go. I wish I could.

I personally think that some Hatracker (ahem Tom ahem) should win this Auction. THEN they would have an amount to be truly embarassed about.

If you like Modest Mouse, check out Sharpen Your Teeth by Ugly Cassanova. Same people, and almost the same kind of music.

Also check out the CD Building Something Out of Nothing. It doesn't get as much mention as Good News for People Who Love Bad News or The Moon and Antarctica, but it's one of my favorite CDs.

If you're looking for deeply personal music, check out Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith. I recommend the songs "Gold Mine Gutted" and "Memory Lane", respectively. Both artists are a little more direct than Modest Mouse (Bright Eyes more than Elliott), but their songs aren't quite as catchy.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

The thing is, can I listen to them easily? WIthout buying/borrowing them? You say check them out, but only really convenient I can think of to do that is to go and buy them. I don't spend money on music, especially untried stuff.

I suppose I could use iTunes, but then I'd need to buy an MP3 player...and a computer on which to load iTunes (won't work on the comp at work). Either way, it's very expensive. Much too expensive to be worth it. I blow my fun money on other things.

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

You can get both of the songs I mentioned off Amazon's Free Music Downloads, as well as a few more by each artist. Ugly Casanova you'll have to do the old fashioned way, however.

Bright Eyes has grown on me a lot. They are pretty big here in Omaha, cause this is where they started. I wasn't a huge fan of the first song of there's I heard, but I know all the words to Take It Easy. Its a sort of anti-love song about a teenage boy being ditched by his friend after they had sex. I think it struck such a cord with me because something very similar happened to me when I was 15.

My favorite verse:
quote:
if you stay to long inside my memory.
i will trap you in a song tied to a melody.
and i'll keep you there so you can't bother me.

I'll have to listen to more of them. The new song of there's on the radio I like too, but not as well as Take it Easy. Its pretty much the opposite, being a love song.

quote:

And you said, "This is the first day of my life."
I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
Now I don't care, I could go anywhere with you
And I'd probably be happy

Now I know we have a "two line max" rule, but without saying "look at line 14-18" or something like that, how do I show the verse which I like? Take the last lines off either of the lyric quotes and they don't mean anything. Its like stopping mid sentence.

Sort of like:
quote:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in conceived in Liberty, and

But I will edit the quotes down if I am asked to.

I prefer his digital stuff to his acoustic stuff, and feel awful about it. It goes against everything musical I believe in.
