How could this occur? Did the mother want to take her husband and child with her? Or were they in a rush to join her?

I would suspect that either...
1) The man had recently found his wife, who had died the day before, didn't know she was dead, and was rushing her to the hospital. Could easily happen if he fell asleep before her and he had just woken up, or if she didn't come home that night, and he found her in the garage in the morning. That sort of thing. (I found my dad about a day after he died)
2) The man killed his wife the day before, and was driving her somewhere to dispose of her body.
