What!?
Mission impossible isn't supposed to end in a battle. It's supposed to end in a checkmate, where the IMF has set up the bad guy so that he has incriminated himself (usually in front of his own people) so badly that he has no avenue for escape. Which also means that there is a very distinct end, when all the pieces come together.
I'm glad I never saw the Tom Cruise movies.

Did you ever watch the TV series? The fake person with the reveal at the end was in almost every episode. MI was more about the psychology then the action. Yeah there was some great tech stuff, but it was the play at the end, like Glen said, that was the heart of the show.

The first one was a decent Mission Impossible movie. The second one was The Tom Cruise Show, with ridiculous effects that insulted the audience and the team way in the background, which was completely against the style of the show.
Thing is, it could have been redeemed at the end. Armchair Director, if you would?
SPOILERS, if you haven't seen MI2 . . . . . . At the end, they barely rescue the infected woman. Cruise has just beaten up the bad guy in a totally unrealistic fight. He's walking towards the copter when he hears the bad guy get up and aim at him. There's a gun in the sand in front of Cruise. In the movie, he kicks it up, spins, and fires before the bad guy can get off a shot. My preferred ending?
I wanted to see Cruise stuck woith no moves and realizing it, when a shot rings out and the bad guy falls. Focus on a surprised Cruise anmd then push the focus past him to show the nearly dead woman holding a smoking gun. She gets closure, Cruise gets saved, and we don't have to believe that the bad guy is so slow on the draw that he can take the time to watch Tom Cruise do juggling tricks.
The problem is, of course, that Cruise wouldn't be The Hero at the end. Never mind all that he's done up til that part, The Hero can't be rescued by a girl. Just isn't done.
But it would have been a better ending.

You people like MI1 better than MI2?? Wow. I hated MI1, due in part to the fact that no film could live up to the unrelenting hype it got pre-release that summer. It was an inevitable disappointment. But I disliked it in general terms as well.
Whereas MI2 was an enjoyable if brainless action movie, though it didn't take enough mood from the TV show.
That is a better ending, Chris.
I wonder if Scientology themes will creep into MI3?

I also disliked MI-1, because it turned the hero of the entire series into the villain. What a cheap move.

That didn't bother me much, partly because I didn't see it coming and partly because while I liked the show, I wasn't a capital F Fan. And the paring away of the core team, followed by the immediate hiring of a new team, maintained the feel of the show.
The second movie, besides rivaling Charlies Angels 2 for inane CGI stunts, had no team feel at all. Mission Impossible wasn't about any one member, but MI2 was all about Tom Cruise.

I thought both MI movies stunk up the theaters.
Caveat: I actually do enjoy action movies, so it isn't just a bias. I just thought the MI movies weren't that good.

I liked them. I wasn't a huge fan of either (and I didn't get why the first one was suppose to be so hard to follow!) but I thought they were decent as far as action flicks went.
I was also pleasently suprised with WOTW two nights ago, and that took some doing....I don't usually allow my personal feelings for an actor color my opinions of their work, but this last bunch of crap Cruise pulled really pissed me off. I was prepared to dislike him, which I still do, and the movie he was in...and I was suprised by the quality of the acting in it to be honest.
Not that it was great, but it was far better than I expected.

The first one was fine, if not confusing, with a good pace. It had the makings of a franchise. The second one was, well, the Tom Cruise show that was more than confusing. It was illogical and inconsistant. The pacing was half insta-romance and half James Bond want-to-be action. I don't think I would ever go see a 3erd Mission Impossible because of how horrible the first one was.

You'll have to give names of movies you consider good American cinema before I can answer.
As for me I would have to answer the 1960s and then Stephen Spielburg and Star Wars type blockbusters.

Isn't this true of every movie that is hyped? Whenever I see Godzilla in the rental place I can't help thinking of Taco Bell.
My point is, movies are hyped by people that (more often than not) had nothing to do with the actual film. Their sole purpose is to get you in the theater before you realize you've been had.

Scott, that's true, but the MI1 media barrage was huge, much more than average I thought. Maybe I just noticed it more because I liked the show as a kid, and was looking forward to it. The movie was a real disappointment.
And one reason I liked MI2 so much more was Thandie Newton. Yum!

Actually, I hear (major spoilers ahead) that at the end of the newest film, the bad guy not only is found to be wearing a false face, but exclaims as they drag him off in handcuffs: "If it weren't for you meddling kids, I would have gotten away with it!"
Choobak: Every once in a while, an American makes a decent movie, but I agree, they are few and far between. See if you can get a copy of Smoke Signals. It's brilliant.
