I found a copy of a book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was presented to a student in 1908. So I'm wondering if and how one can find the copyright for this printing if it isn't listed. Any suggestions?

start researching printers at the time. the more information you know about it the easier it will be to find out. Where is it from? Who gave it to the student? If you know the printer you should be able to extrapolate the printing year.

1908 being more than 75 years ago, the copyright should be long gone anyway, surely? Besides, the book was first printed before the Civil War, even.

Originally published 1852. After the war, it was republished with a new introduction by Harriet Beecher Stowe, in 1878.

If you're looking for when the actual copy of the book you've got was printed, what you'll need is an edition history. I know how to find this for pieces of music (there are various reference books specifically aimed at that sort of information); I'm not sure about fiction, though. I suggest called the reference librarian at the nearest university. They are GREAT help for things like that.

I might try my university... All it says inside that might be publishing information is this in the front:

"Edinburgh
W. P. Nimmo, Hay, & Mitchell"

and this in the back:

"Printed by Morrison and Gibb Limited, Edinburgh"

All of which I have googled in different ways. I'm not so much worried about breaking copyright laws, as I am interested in which edition of the book it might be. Old books intrigue me and this is definately my oldest book.
