Tante suggested a Googlethon between jatraqueros, for bragging rights I suppose.

I have an idea for an informal format, but it might not give a clear winner. Perhaps it could be a warm-up to a more formal contest.

I'll suggest a question shortly. Whoever wants can google it.

Winner gets to posit new question.

Have at you!

That's one...
Are the Jewish Ladies who Trivialize Everything willing? [Wink]

Try to think of trivia or questions that might be tough to google. In case you win.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Doesn't this depend an awful lot on who happens to be online at any given time?

Which works fine for a game; less so for a contest, neh? Game is probably more fun anyway. [Smile]

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

The only way to do a fair judgement on who is the fastest googler on the board, is to set up a site that has a "ask" button and a "submit answer" button, calculating the time, with a fair and balanced judge reading the answers.

Personally, I think thats a bit too much. I like it as an idea for a game, though. [Smile]

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Yeah, it only works easily as an informal game, not a real tournament.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

I have two good questions, one of which I happened to bookmark earlier. Let me google the other, and make sure I have a good online reference, then we can start. I should be able to google it in a few minutes.

How's this for an answer?

You and Rivka.
Arrrghh, one answer I had turned out to be to complicated and wrong.

I'll go with the other.

Some of you may remember this from my first thread. [Smile]

Googlethon Question:Why was Nixon impeached in the 1980s?

Posted by JaimeBenlevy (Member # 6222) on :

Wasn't he impeached in the 70s? And can we use wikipedia instead of google? I like wikipedia way better.

Posted by Vadon (Member # 4561) on :

So, let me get this straight, how it works is we just google the question, and post the url of our search?

Or do we post the URL of the answer we found for the question?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Nixon resigned, and in 1974. I was a few months old at the time. [Wink]

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Post the answer, to claim priority.
The url is nice too. Might be quicker to just cut-and-paste the URL.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Use any online resource.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Jaime and Rivka: of course, it's a trick question.

http://www.watergate.info/
quote:
"Watergate" is a general term used to describe a complex web of political scandals between 1972 and 1974. The word specifically refers to the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C.

Nixon's last days in office came in late July and early August, 1974. The House Judiciary Committee voted to accept three of four proposed Articles of Impeachment, with some Republicans voting with Democrats to recommend impeachment of the President.

At 9pm on the evening of August 8, 1974, Nixon delivered a nationally televised resignation speech.

Is that sufficient?

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Very good rivka! But it doesn't quite answer my question.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

No, that is not the answer. It's only partially connected to my question.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Whereas I, personally, dislike American-centric Google questions. So I decline to get involved. [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

[Confused] Your question has no answer. Nixon was never impeached (only 3 of 4 articles), and certainly never in the 1980s.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

It certainly does have an answer.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

rivka, I can't answer in specifics without giving away the trick question. But your answer is incomplete, and doesn't answer my question.

Yes, RRR wins!
I never said Pres. or Richard--just Nixon. Almost everyone assumes it's President Nixon.

Good job, that's one of my favorite trivia questions, and tough to google because of the avalanche of material you get on Richard Nixon and impeachment.

Do you have a question for us to google, RRR?

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

Does it have anything to do with Bork?

Edit: Never mind.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Here's the Senate page for my answer: senate.gov
and a google search, straight from my question, that lists Judge Nixon as impeached: google search

Hello, RRR? Do you have anything for us?

Posted by Rappin' Ronnie Reagan (Member # 5626) on :

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

RRR is AWOL. Anybody else have a good googlethon question? RRR can ask one when she gets back.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Myeh, the movie is what I was looking for, but that site is a dirty lie. It jumped the shark when Smokingman was shot, but not killed in Season 5.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

The answer is the movie, if you count never jumped as #1.

Good question, TL

Hm, I found a story someone's been writing where he talks about a 'fight in the ditch' from July 20th 2004...

But, I doubt that's it.

Here's the link...

I'll change this if I find something else, if I happen to be right, I so call claims on the next one. Found a question that has a path you can follow, but it takes some thinking to get. ^_^ (Tried it myself.)

The Union won. As it does every year the assault on Fort Saunders is reenacted.

(I can't actually find a reenactment on that date, and the real assault was on November 29th, BUT ... it was called the "Fight in the Ditch", so it was worth a try ...)

These are the links I DID find:

Unfortunately, the Patriot Act restricts what pages are visible for most people in the States unless you get the workaround.

That does make this competition a bit unfair.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

The "fight in the ditch" was censored from my google search? Huh?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Try using +'s in between words instead of "'s, Tante.

So fight+in+the+ditch+07/30/04 works.

And sean, I personally don't believe the government is using the Patriot Act to deny the american public access to them through google. However, I do keep my mind open enough that I would be interested to read more about this. Or is the government restricting those web pages from being accessed? [Wink]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

T's suggestion brings it (or rather, its parent page) up as the first hit.

Who testified against Eichmann on the 128th day of the Gregorian Calendar, and why would I ask this question?

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

May 8 is the 128th day in the Gregorian calender.
Here is the transcript of Eichmann's trial in Israel, from May 8, 1961.

I looked through it, and no witnesses testify. The prosecutor (Israel's Attorney General) submits many documents for evidence but calls no witnesses that day.

Posted by TL (Member # 8124) on :

Weird. Perhaps I misunderstood the phrase "bore witness" somewhere on the internet.

Let me rephrase. On the 128th day of the Gregorian Calendar, who bore witness against Eichmann?

Ahh, now I see.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

I'll post a question before 4:30, hopefully.
BTW, if you run across any good general reference pages that help you answer a question, you can post them too.

My second search led me to http://www.wikimirror.com/1961 , which is a much better webpage of historical events day-by-day than I used on earlier questions. It's very detailed.

Or if you have any general tips. One that consummate googler Kayla posted in 2003 when I was a novice at it is to use Google's cache, because it highlights your search terms and speeds up skimming through webpages.

Murf. I've frittered my time away and have no time to research the question I was going to ask, the one I was originally going to ask on the first page.

So I'll use another throw-away trivia question.

If the final phase of the Russian revolution happened in November, why is it called the October Revolution?

Some of you may know it already.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

The answer is Russia was still using the Julian calender, the rest of the world had switched to Gregorian.
