What's the definition of date? I mean, are we talking about who we'd like to go see a movie with, or sit in a coffee shop and talk to, based solely on personality? If we're taking sexual attraction out of the equation then it could be anyone, male or female. I think the real title would be "If you wanted to hang out with any Hatracker, who would it be?"

Myself, I'd like to hang out with Olivet. But that's cheating, because we actually HAVE hung out together before.

Posted by Sid Meier (Member # 6965) on :

lol, lemme objectify:

Who would you like to "date" as in go to movies with have coffee with. Based solely on what you see on Hatrack, and yes that is cheating [Mad] [Razz]

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

I'd pick Olivetta, but it would just cause heartache and legal fees down the road.

So I'll go with Jay. Guaranteed we'd have something to talk about the whole time.

Just on the off chance that this thread is not meant 100% as a joke . . .
Um, hon . . . you do realize I'm about 10 years older than you, right? I'm very flattered, though. [Smile]

Yeah, being happily married, I don't tend to think of Hatrackers that way.

But if I were to pick off the top of my head, I'd go with my husband's evil twin, Noemon. 'Cause he's just cool.

Maybe it's because Mama actually reads Hatrack, but I'm rather uncomfortable answering. So many reasonable options to choose from -- mostly female -- but to choose only one? Depends on the kind of dating, too -- dating looking toward marriage, just for fun hanging out, NCMO, etc.

I also have a tough time (a) considering dating someone I've never met, and (b) separating the appearance from the personality of those I have met.

Nope -- I can't answer. Sorry.

Hey, I was mentioned by someone other than my girlfriend.

[Kiss] Stray

Well, I would say there's a lot of hatrack ladies I would love to go on a date with. One thing I think was sorely lacking in my teen years were actual "dates". You know, where a guy and a girl go do something together, without it being implied that you were an exclusive couple. In my school it was considered "cheating" to be going on dates with multiple people at the same time (like in the same week). Exclusivity was always implied, without a formal "break-up". Woot!

I think it goes without saying that anyone I mention would be platonic, but I say it anyway. [Big Grin]

I'd love to do the couples hanging out together thing with Tom and Christy, dkw and Bob, and Chris and Teres and Vana and Lime! Already DO with Ben and Ophelia, and Mack and Nathan. Always fun.

Jenny G could gold medal in flirting, even when she isn't really there (my buddy Nash saw the WenchCon video, and lost his heart). I'm always up for girltime with Jenny, Belle and CT. And , dear lord, I miss Bonduca!I'd also love to hang with Farmgirl, Eljay, Kayla and celia, and all the Wenches! Katie, kwsni, Megan, kq, Lucky, xnera, ladyday! JaneX! Ela!

I also miss Pat and Slash., and POD and Caleb

Truth is, I love you guys! I wish we lived close enough that I could bake KarlEd a pie, or go play with ketchup princess whenever I wanted.

'Rackers I'd like to know better, Lissande, Lyrhawn, Enigmatic, synesthesia...Tammy, Toretha, Jaiden, and Anne Kate... Ryuko and...

There are just too many cool Rackers to keep up with 'em all. [Smile]

I did go to a party with the Beautiful People on Friday. It came to a screeching halt when we started to discuss politics. Maybe then?

Sometimes I forget that not everyone is a Hatracker. It's apparently only polite to talk politics when everyone agrees.

Hey, Dave, wasn't it you who was telling me that most of your memories of WenchCon came from pictures? It is entirely possible that Katie wasn't there for the pinching. I didn't even know there WAS pinching.

Ok Jim and Narnia, since you like the idea of the group dating too I have a plan.

Let's speed date all of the Hatrackers. That way we can weed the weaker ones out. For example, say Tom Davidson can't hold up his end of the conversation [Wink] then the next person knows not to spend much time on him.

I say we need a big convention center and a Con to get this figured out.

Tante - you're definitely worth it, but I simply don't want to miss one of my rare opportunities to date non-Jews. After all, I live in a nation made out of Jews, so I'd rather not miss a chance for something quite different.

So that cancels Raia out too, not that I have anything against her. We've been out a few times.

And no, it's not Tom Davidson. If anything, we'd start a poetry-club.

I'll give you one hint, though - the name was mentioned on this thread in the past, though you wouldn't guess easily. Oh, and it's a woman - just so you don't start the whole me-with-men thing. I just don't date men, even if I'm ideologically in favour of the concept - it simply changes the dynamics too much for me...

Though the last thing in the world that I would want right now is a date, here are a few that I would consider:

Raventh, because he's one of the nicest and coolest people...ever. [Smile]

Feyd Baron, because we both like dogs. (this could go for AJ as well) [Big Grin]

Fugu13, because we were roomies for a week and we got along. [Razz]

That would be Ophelia(Lindsay). Asked her Saturday night, right in front of her squeeze. She said, "Hey Ben, Olivia just asked me out on a date." He said, "Oh. Cool."

All I really said was, "Hey, Lindsay! You, me, The Island."

Can't get my Beloved to go to Ewan McGregor movies with me. Afraid he might accidentally catch a flash of Wee Ewan, I think.

Oooh, Katie, Kung Fu Hustle was a great movie! I think you would love it, in fact. It's violent but the violence is rather cartoonlike and playful, for the most part. And t6he movie is funny and sweet. Its heart is in the right place.

I had the most fantastic date to that movie, in fact, with two really awesome hatrackers, BunnV and Grisha. Oh and we also saw Finding Nemo and H2G2 that same day so it's like I had six dates all in one day. (I guess that makes up for having none for months before that.)

Thanks to everyone who said they would date me. Y'all are very sweet. [Blushing]

T, you're taken. Plus, you're taken by a close personal friend. Even pretending to covet you is beyond my personal taboos.

I mean, I'm married, so all men besides my Beloved are taboo, but the Beloved of a fellow Wench? That's DOUBLE taboo.

I'm totally programmed to look upon the husbands of my friends with less interest than I would a pizza that had been licked by a dog.

It's nothing personal. [Big Grin]

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

LOL, I know. Thats what I figured, and why it's only sorta.

Like "Hey, I'm not on the cool list! Wait a second, I'm already in the club."

And for future record, if the dog only licked 2 slices, that means there are still at least 4 slices left on a small pizza that are still good. But I think thats just the optimist in me.

Well, it would sure make for a good John Irving novel, though, Enigmatic.

You know, I am feeling better. I have quite a group date going on. It is like those "dates" we had in middle school, where thirty people would go to the movies.

The thing is, I shudder at the truth of dating. I have not had to do so for twenty years, and even then, it was more about getting drunk at a frat party and kissing someone. I don't know how people do it, and I can totally see why Internet dating services have become so popular.

I think it's good to delete posts if they hurt feelings (including your own) but if you are going to discuss the deletion it might be good to just put [content deleted by so and so] rather than actually delete the post so that the crazy people don't go even crazier looking for it. Sorry.

It's what I call a long-distance relationship: we don't meet each other, we don't think much of each other, and we live in adjacent neighbourhoods.

Hey, why shouldn't OSC write a book about that?

:Side comment based on previous post:

I've been thinking about the age difference thing myself.

On the one hand, it can be argued that if two people really care for each other, the age difference should be meaningless. Especially the older you get (i.e: my mom and step dad are 12 years apart, but she was 37 when she married him, so it wasn't even remotely a consideration. 12 years difference for me, though, puts a girl at 19.)

But at the same time I can't help but wonder that, for example, if I, now 31, was pursuing a girl at 18-20, I would really not be looking out for her best interests. That is, I would be not be giving her time to really figure out who she is and what she wants out of life before shackling her to a life she may not have later wanted.

We do know that those years are very formative and that personal interests/desires change quite a bit, even into the mid 20's.

I don't know. I'm not really interested in anyone that young. But I wonder if it'd be a potential problem. Then again, people change anyway, regardless of age.

Posted by Jim-Me (Member # 6426) on :

ignorance of a woman's virtues is no excuse?

Posted by Javert (Member # 3076) on :

Who cares? Its not like they are setting up a meeting with her.

And you have to realize that a good number of us have met eachother. I personally have met dozens of hatrackers, and each and every one of them who claimed to be a young woman/girl, turned out to be one! Shocking, I know. (Sadly, those claiming to be 46 year old dudes didn't end up being young women either)

Plus I am currently living with someone I met on this very site...

Being attracted to someone based on their words and a pic isn't as scary as the early-internet urban legends make it sound.

Plus, you don't have a guarantee in real life either. Without a complete gynecological inspection, can you ever truly know the gender of someone you are attracted to?

Where are the 16-19 year old male Hatrackers?

Posted by IanO (Member # 186) on :

My ex-wife was older (and more worldly wise) than me and it (not solely, but partly) was a source of many problems. Long story.

I guess I'm a tad jaded about it. Unfair, I know.

More practically speaking, however, is the fact that I want to have more kids. We only had one because she had health problems that made it dangerous. And the health risks for a woman in her 40's are higher.

I guess I have issues.

But I'm not closed to anything.

Well as mentioned, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos are canadian teams (are the Expos still around?).

I, personally, would love it if there were teams from outside the US in the league, but its a matter of logistics more than exclusivity I would think. The canadian/US border has far fewer restrictions than any other country to have teams in. These teams play over a hundred games a season, so distance is a factor as well. Add to that the fact that with the current draft/trading system, you could be moved out of country on a whim of your general manager. Would kind of stink for that player.

I can see Puerto Rico getting a team someday, but they are technically still part of the US.

Posted by IanO (Member # 186) on :

See, that's what I was thinking Kat, but I wasn't expressing it clearly. I wasn't so much talking about the age difference itself as the lower age of the other person, even when clearly a legal adult, in relation to me. I'm not (and will not be) that creepy older guy hitting on 19 year old girls.

But I wondered if I was the only one who felt that it would not be a good idea.

Baseball teams? Me? Hearing about them? Ha!

*Yawn* - you've obviously never heard of Wes Hall, Don Bradman*, Richie Benaud, or ven the modern stars: Brett Lee (bowls at 95 mph), Adam Gilchrist (who bats for about 4 hours before being out and goes off when he thinks that he's out - regardless of the umpire), or Jason Gillespie (the "Gypsy" whose "caravan is in repair").

Then again, I never saw Babe Ruth. That whole business about the Red Sox being cursed gave me enough reason not to look at Baseball. The best that came out of Baseball was Joe Dimagio (sp?), whom I only like because it fits nicely in Mrs. Robinson's lyrics. Again, that's Simon and Garfunkel - not he himself.

Sure, I'm biased, but what self-respecting non-North-American Anglo-Saxon would watch some game with their easy-batting techniques? I'd like to see a "batter" (why not "batsman"? "Batter" reminds me of rams) try and bat from a tougher position holding the bat vertically and not in a swing-prepared position.

* Who was knighted for his skills as a player; he was told to have had "more records than a gramophone company".

Nicely put. It's why I am looking in the 22+ range, for that very reason, though obviously there are going to be exceptions (i.e.: An older person who has been sheltered and is extremely naive versus a 19 year-old who has had alot of life experience. But that's the exception, not the rule.)

In Spring, there are high school sports tournments downtown almost every weekend, and the streets are crawling with teenagers on Thursdays and Fridays. This year I noticed that I was being oogled by more teenage boys than I ever was as a teenager myself. It was very odd, I've worked downtown for six years and never noticed this before.

Most of them seemed to be in the 16 - 17 year age range. It varied between being creepy and hilarious.

Perhaps some teenagers want to be considered adults enough that something like that will not be thought of as a bad thing, but simply proof that they are grown up.

Or perhaps without the perspective of an adult 25+, they don't realize how much of an abuse of power it is for the adult in that situation to pursue a relationship with a HS student.

IanO,
You are right. It really is an abuse of power, and so many stories emerges after high school and college that give me the heebie jeebies. I think of it in the same basket as priests molesting children and "grooming" of young athletes.
At my college, the Shakepeare professor was really nasty to women. I don't think a woman ever got an A from him.
It turned out he had been luring young men into his bed for many years. It eventually came out(so to speak) and he was fired.

I'm "up in arms" because I'm afraid where this kind of thing may go. There are a lot of people who have delicate egos around here. They don't need someone not talking to them or something because of the way they look. Be honest with yourself, if you didn't care what they looked like, and just wanted to talk, you wouldn't ask for a picture of them. As it stands, you want to know what they look like so that you can judge as to whether or not you will talk to them. I just don't think that kind of AOL chat garbage is appropriate around here.

Dear Primal Curve,
Why do you think that I am some frivolous teen girl who judges people by how they look? I jsut said you were attractive but that does not imply that I would go on a date with you. Just like you said, there is a big age gap right there. Please tell me you are not the type of guy that thinks that just because he is attractive all girls want something with him. I also agree with Jim-Me, this thread is not a place for those with delicate egos.
Yours truly,

Ok, so I'm holding back here 'cause I think some of these posts are creepy, and then Alty complains that no one would want to date her?! Hmm... Well, I'll give it a try then. Categories in bold.

Date-dates (personality-based, one of my friends told me I'm blind to physical beauty anyway [Big Grin] ): Alty (sorry I'm late, but better late than never, no?), tt&t, mack, pooka.

Platonic dates (in no particular order): Anna, Annie, BunnV, Elizabeth, kat, Raia.

Would-I-be-a-girl dates: twinky, Hobbes.

Fan-boy dates: Chris Bridges, sndrake.

"Alternate-reality-me"s: Boris. The second date should be a blast...

Alt, look at the very first post on page one. It is about dating hatrackers based on what you already know about them on hatrack, not what they look like. Then you come in here, show a picture of yourself looking gorgeous (and sounding like you know it!) hint that not enough people have mentioned you by name, and then you want pictures of other people who express an interest. LOOK at the first post. Then look at your response.

It looks really, really shallow. It's changed the flavor of the whole thread, too. Before I could tolerate it pretty easily. Now I actively dislike it.

But then I'm one of the fragile ego people so it's my fault for continuing to read it. (I'm not being sarcastic.) You haven't done anything wrong, but your percieved attitude towards this topic is something that will annoy or even upset some people.

I don't think you quite grasp either the nature of Hatrack landmarking or the nature of Hatrack popularity thread iteration #346 Johnny boy.

I wonder, almost certainly in vain, if, like with the purpose of the failed but admirable dobie consolidation thread, we could have one thread for the periodic popularity contests. Heck, we could even keep a second thread for people whining about how no one mentioned them on the popularity thread.

Most of the community-centric Hatrack threads, even *shudder* the dobies, do serve to build community bonds. This confirms cliques and makes a bunch of people feel excluded and hurts their esteem. I just don't think it's a good idea. But then again, this isn't my scene and maybe it works for you all.

Ah - I must nitpick. I personally was served, and I quote, papas a la francesa in the dark depths of southern Mexico.

Also, this is one of the fun games I used to play with my roommates:

Me: Do you guys know what they call French bread in France?

Them: (anticipating something cool, like Russian bread) What?

Me: Bread. Do you know what they call French fries?

Them: Um.... American fries?

Me: Frites - which means "fries." Do you know what they call French onion soup?

Them: (they just roll their eyes at me)

Me: Onion soup! Incredible! Do you know what they call French kissing?

Them: Um... kissing?

Me: Actually, I'm not quite sure. I never had the opportunity to discuss the terminology much. My mouth was busy.

Them: (throw pillows at me)

Happily, we have a number of native French speakers we can ask about that, at least one of them right here in this very thread.

So, Choobak, how about it? What is the French term for a type of kiss that involves sticking one's tongue in the other person's mouth?

I think I've finally understood why this thread is so popular - it has it all:

-Vulnerable Attractive People who downplay their attractiveness. Guys and girls alike flock to them like flies to a cowpie.

-Attractive People Who Know They're Attractive And Flaunt it Using Photographic Evidence. Desperate people flock to Hawt .jpgs like Utah Mormons to Jello.

-Women professing their love for each other. There are many of the male persuasion who will find this irresistably hawt.

-Hatrack Drama. Yelling! Fights! People being accused of doing things wrong! People accused of being Bad People! Bad People Being Bad People! Good People Being Bad People! Bad People being Good People! Good People Being Good People!

This thread is totally a movie I'd watch and love and then look horrified and vehemently deny any association if anyone ever asked if I saw it.

Kinda like Orgazmo.

Unfortunately I don't have time to really go anywhere too far. I have to conserve my leave a bit this year. My sis gets married this year. Add the time to go home for that with my maybe 20 day transfer leave and I won't have that much saved up in the books if something bad should happen. And with my schedule as mucked up as it is right now, it makes it hard to do a few necessities.

You know, when I read that post (and thread title) so late last night, the one thing that came to mind was...

That the emphasis on ANY reminded me too much of "It doesn't DO anything. That's the beauty of it!"

I don't see it too much now that it's morning and I've had sleep, but last night, the resemblance was hilarious.

I should've added an addendum that my undiagnosed ADD also runs a bit more rampant after hours as well. This, in addition to the Davidic Veracity, makes me mark the Wee Hours Of The Morning as "Stupid Hours", and I attempt to guard them as a vampire does the sunlight.

That being said...

I'm weird when it comes to 'dating'. Because, frankly, I don't like the idea.

I have a personal philosophy concerning dating that many have called be bat-crap crazy for, yet others have told me they see a logic in it.

Either way - I don't actively look for dates. I look for friends. My idea is that I'd rather have a few really good friends that stay friends than a lot of dates with people I don't care about, and will probably never think about again.

I like to build a foundation of friendship, and then if it Goes Any Where, then it does, and that's awesome. But if it doesn't, then you still have some pretty great friends.

I've made some wonderful platonic female friends through the 'Rack. I'm one of the guys who doesn't assume that just because a girl is nice to him that She Loves Him And Wants To Marry Him And Have A Bazillion Of His Babies.

Jamie (Mackillian), Katie (katharina), Olivia (olivetta), Janelle (Virmoli), Lindsay (Ophelia), Kama (Kama), Ami (Amka), Steph (Steph), Judy and Sarah (Ela and JaneX), and Abby (Lucky4) are a few awesome Jatraqueras that I've met in person, and have since been able to spend some time getting to know a little better. At least six of those are either married or engaged, and I love the fact that I have some good married friends. Makes me feel...older, I guess.

There are many more I'd like to get to know better. I've heard Banna's praises sung far and wide. Annie seems to be one of the coolest, most prolifically culturally educated people I've come across. Rivka simply rocks. Xnera. Anne Kate. Dkw. Etc, etc, the list goes on and on.

Hatrack is filled with such extraordinary women, there are very few I wouldn't like to meet and befriend.

The guys kinda rock too. And there are plenty other women I'd specifically add to the list, but I'm late for something, so I need to stop typing now.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

When should I start worrying then?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Some time after college. If you have a job and your own place to live and can't get a date, then worry. Until then, be yourself, educate yourself, learn to make your way in the world independently, gather a circle of friends, whether it be through your church (or synagogue, or whatever,) or a fraternity, (though I wouldn't recommend that,) or just through hanging out with friends in a dorm at college, and then let the rest take care of itself.

JH, you're an intelligent teenager, so if you don't date much/at all in high school that's actually fairly normal. I assume you'll be going on to college, and I'd expect your love life to pick up then. Mine did, most of my geeky friends' did too.

Why is college so great for dating?
1) Social groups are starting over. Most people go to college in a different city, state, sometimes country than where they grew up. You might have 1 or 2 HS friends go to the same college as you, but for the most part every college freshman is looking for new friends and relationships.
2) You get to reinvent yourself. Your highschool reputation, for good or ill, will not follow you to college. I'm not saying pretend to be something you're not, just that you can finally put behind any embarrassing things that happened years ago and everyone in your highschool knew about.
3) In college you'll be with people who already share some of your interests. Whatever you major in, you'll be in classes with men and women who are also interested in that. Much easier to start a friendship or dating when you know you've got at least one big thing in common. Take some electives you like too, so you meet people outside of your degree program.
4) "There's a time and a place for everything. It's called college." Most college students are living away from home for the first time and are going to want to enjoy that freedom. That includes dating you, make sure someone enjoys that.

I didn't date or kiss a girl in highschool, either. I assure you that I did in college, though. Now, if you manage to make it through 4 years of college without getting a date, that's when you might want to start wondering if you're doing something wrong. Or go to gradschool for another chance at it!

Though I think you make many excellent points, Enigmatic, this one doesn't apply, really... Jonny lives in Israel, where there are FAR less universities than there are in the US. Basically, you finish high school, go serve in the army (which is mandatory), then go to university with the same people. Yes, you will meet new people, make new friends, and lose touch with some of your school buddies, but definitely not with everyone. There's about three or four decent universities that I can think of in all of Israel.

Raia's right; you don't have the vast system of "colleges" that the US has (I assume that colleges in the US work like in Oxford University?), so even though it's an opportunity - everyone knows everyone. That's at least how it works in Jerusalem.

Of course, I could get out of advanced studies in Israel and go someplace like, say, Australia or England, where there's a wider variety. Hey, maybe I can teach Hebrew some day in Oxford University...

As for Annie's statement:

Umm... The fact that my father's family, the "Howard" family, is aristocratic, originating in good old Norfolk - does that credit me? [Razz]

I mean that a university is divided into many colleges around the city, each serving a different faculty.

Is it so?

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Most universities here are divided into multiple schools based on function. At UVA, for example, there's the college of liberal arts and sciences, the graduate school of arts and sciences, the engineering school, the nursing school, the school or commerce, the architecture school, the medical school, the business school, and the law school.

My sketchy understanding of Oxford is that the divisions are not strictly functional, and that one could get the same degree from several different colleges.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

The University of Toronto in Canada has Oxford-like Colleges to which students belong, reside and participate in one of many smaller communities that make up the whole of the University, but I think it's the exception with North American Universities rather than the rule. You can get any degree from any college although some degrees are loosely associated with a specific college.

At Toronto, originally, they were seperately formed for different Christian denominations- Anglican, Catholic, Methodist etc, and were then amalgamated into one school for convenience. Now, the colleges are more of a social and residential thing, although in some religion still plays a part and the traditions of the colleges are often very strong. It certainly makes a larger University feel less daunting!

As far as I can tell, there aren't many Universities with the old College system in America/Canada and the word "college" can mean the University itself, a functional school or part of a school like Dagonee said or a Community College which is less academic than a University.

Well, except for what's been said in this thread I don't really know anything about dating or college in Israel. But if you have a chance to study in another country, for the whole degree or as part of a 1-year study abroad program, go for it. Partly because it's a great experience but also for a general principle to help with your collegiate dating: Foreigners are hot.

As soon as you travel to a different country you become more exotic, interesting, and alluring than you were at home. Suddenly you'll have a sexy accent. Obviously that's not going to make you attractive to everyone in the country you're visiting, but it will make you attractive to enough that you'll have an easier time getting dates. I've discussed this principle with enough exchange students both to and from here that I have a lot of faith in it.

Sweetheart, there is a logic to this. You get to have the benefit of female company without the burden and accompanying joys of a solo relationship.

Not that no-committment friendship with the ooposite sex is bad. It's not the same thing, though, no matter how many girls you put on your list. You just don't know what you are missing.

I thought about putting in an addendum along these lines, but decided to leave current politics out of it. The principle still applies, the current prevailing attitudes may just be a dampening factor. Even if people don't like what Americans are doing, if they meet one who's travelling abroad there's a good chance they'd want to talk to him/her and ask questions about what it's really like here, etc. That's a great chance to take a stand against war and imperialism to show all sensitive and caring you are. wink-wink. (I'm still waiting for the American flag "We are not ALL jerks" tshirt I ordered.)

Yeah - it's not so much political as social.

Sit near Notre Dame in Paris and count Americans one day. You'll notice you can count them because you can recognize them. They're the ones wearing tshirts with big slogans and pictures, sweatpants and baseball caps. They're the ones talking REALLY LOUDLY in English about stupid things, mostly how no one around them speaks English. The twenty French people around them understand every word that's being said, and you will recognize them by the fact that they're rolling their eyes.

You can spot Americans in Latin America, not just because they're tall and white, but because they're the only ones eating at Pizza Hut. When they're not there, they're getting trashed in bars where they'll down margaritas all night but protest loudly that they don't want any water because "you can't drink the water here."

Right, but the shirt can reassure someone, after I've reduced them to tears with scathing insults, offended them with disgusting comments, and kicked them in the shins, that there are others who are not jerks. Nowhere in the statement "We are not all jerks" is a claim that I am one of these Not Jerks.

I've been overseas (meaning Europe) twice and been treated very kindly by everyone I met. I'm sure I'm obviously American, but I didn't encounter any rolled eyes (unless they were behind my back [Wink] ), and most people were very patient when they realized I needed help and couldn't understand them.

It was the same in Brazil, except that the people approach YOU and ask if you need help if you look the slightest bit perturbed. [Smile] (And I was even MORE obviously American there.)

This is some marvelously subtle circular logic. Americans must be obnoxious because you can notice them because of how obnoxious they are. If there are any Americans at Notre Dame who did learn French, are polite, and dressed respectably, I guess you didn't include THEM in your sample group because you couldn't tell they were american. Just like if I see an asian-looking guy at the mall without at least three cameras he must not be a Japanese tourist.

Tourists acting like stereotypical tourists are not sexy. Students studying abroad or people visiting who are actually interested in the country's culture, are.

Interesting anecdote on obnoxious tourist behaviour: I went to India for 5 weeks on business. On weekends my coworkers would take me to various sites and such in and around Bangalore. At many places, locals going for a scenic hike and Indian vacationers from other parts of the country would approach us and want to get their picture taken with me. Apparently it's very rare for men over there to have long hair, and since I was always wearing sunglasses a lot of people thought I was a rockstar or something. My coworker-guides I thought it funny that the local folks were acting a lot more "touristy" than I was.

Those are not her stereotypes. I've seen, heard and sensed these things in Italy, the Czech Republic, Australia, England, Ireland - and partly in Israel (it seems to me like this nation has a fetish for Americans, though).

The Americans talk relatively loudly in foreign lands; why where I stayed in Italy I could not tell who was German, who was Dutch and who was Scandinavian (amongst the tourists). But the Americans were much more noticable...

I laughed at Annie's post, because it's so true.

---

As for Enigmatic's post - I must say that it's true. If a tourist is talking loudly, he or she will probably be either Israeli or American. That's not to say that Americans or Israelis can't be quiet. It's like soccer: if you're a dimwit, you'll probably be a soccer fan rather than other sports, but if you're a soccer fan - rather than other sports' fan - it does not mean you are a dimwit.

So Annie just got the direction a little flawed. But the statistics of stereotyps speak for themselves. I can walk down the street here or be in a shop and the loudest noise will be: "OW MY GAAAD! SOOZIE! LUK AT THIS BUK! IT'S FRAAM THIRDEEN HUNDRED AND SUMTHIN! IT'S OLDER THAN CULUMBES! MY GAAAAD [during the long "a" sound in the last word please note that the pitch becomes that of an unbearable screech that cannot be made into sound except by shocked Americans and extremely talented soprano opera singers.]" (My father actually heard that in a shop locally, and I heard just the "Oh my God!" bit many, many times as the loudest thing around.)

Edited for intensity.

I agree with both those statements. We get a lot of stereotypical (loud, baseballcap&- trackpantswearing) American tourists here, and personally I find them the most annoying of any tourists. That's not to say that I'm one of those people who get irritated by tourists just because they're tourists; in general they're fine, but I certainly find the obnoxious American ones far more annoying than any other kind, even other annoying kinds. If you know what I mean. [Razz]

But I don't mean to say that all Americans are like that. They're not, however, as exotic as many other cultures, which doesn't add to the whole sexy-and-appealing-foreigner thing. Sorry guys. I do not programme. I studied about a third of a year of Pascal and one year of JavaScript (90 minuts a week); and even if I was one of the two best students in the class, it doesn't mean I can programme.

"Break" is not necessarily poor form, it's the best way I know how to cancel the loop from contiuing. I didn't do it for accuracy and proper writing - I did it for the amusement, which you said worked well.

Again, I'm no programmer, and I just know some simple stuff; I think I still have bugs in the programme.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

break's perfectly fine form, its much cleaner than the huge pileup of state saving variables that often appear in its place.

Of course, if one can make a loop without either break or a pileup of state saving variables, one should do so. (edit: for instance, abstract the loop out into a function, and then just use return in the function when its necessary to exit the loop with a particular value).

However, the style's bad for several other reasons -- mainly because the code is for the most part nonsensical (even assuming the parts which would need to be defined elsewhere, are).

Damn, the " [Razz] "s are escaping me lately. [Wall Bash]

I think Kiwi rules, but I have to put in an anti-N Aussie joke. Seriously, I'm not bigotted; I just screw-up my posts.

Jim, I will when I have a second, rushed off my feet at the moment! Shouldn't be Hatrackin', but you know how it is. [Wink]

Thanks ElJay. [Blushing]

Jonathan, you make it sound like you have a choice about dating Kiwi. I have two words for that: Yeah. Right. [Razz]

JH, you do know the difference between a Kiwi and an Aussie, right?

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Is it like the difference between someone from Brooklyn and someone from the Bronx? Brooklyn is on an island, the Bronx is on the continent. Both speak English, kind of, but with a strange accent.

Nah, probably nothing like... [Evil Laugh]

While many New Yorkers seem to think otherwise, it is generally accepted that the Bronx and Brooklyn are parts of the same country . . .

I'm reminded of a joke from an Austrailian standup comic (can't remember his name):
"We always say that the New Zealanders are shagging sheep. The New Zealanders always say that we're shagging sheep. I think one thing is obvious though, it's those sheep that're the ones sleeping around!"

[ROFL]

I've heard lots of jokes about sheep-shaggers, but never that one.

Rivka, I'm sure there are a lot of things Jonathan doesn't know the difference between. [Razz] (And I'm sure there's a better way to word that, as per Corwin's thread, but I can't think of it right now. >_<)

See, Jonathan, the thing with jokes is that they're supposed to be funny. Had it been funny, you wouldn't have needed the graphic shorthand, we would have known it was a joke because we would have been laughing.

[Wink] <- smiley added in an attempt to make post look slightly less bitchy.

And yes, giveress rivka, I do actually know the difference between Aussies and Kiwis: we thrash them in cricket and rugby [Razz] !

"giveress"? *snicker* You're been hanging around us Ashkenazi-speakers too long. [Big Grin]

rivka, my mom wants to meet you. I think you two would get along very well [Big Grin]

I bet we would. After all, she produced you. So she must be pretty cool.

I am Ashkenazi! Obviously, I don't speak like you lot, but I was just trying to speak your tongue (which kills my teeth, but that's not the issue).

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Of course you are. So are my cousins, but they all speak Israeli Hebrew. Hence Ashkenazi-speakers.

Oh, and I know absolutely no one who would say "giveress." Israelis would say "giveret," and someone speaking lashon hakodesh would be highly unlikely to use the word at all -- it is strictly an ivrit moderni word.

"Giveret" would've been used maybe 50 years ago, toay no-one pronounces the schewa as a "i". Just - "g'veret".

Anyway, let's get back to dating. Oh, and what are you doing up so early? Tante was telling me to go to bed when her own student is up in the middle of the night?!

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

rivka's not my student, except in the sense that we are all here to learn from each other. And rivka's a mommy, so she gets to do whatever she wants.

As my Ma would tell me: "Once you are a grown woman, move out of the house, and have your own family, you can make your own rules. But while you are still living in my house, you have to follow my rules."

Nowadays, if my Ma is visiting, and suggests that it is chilly out and I might want to put on a sweater, I remind her of the deal that we had and that I am a grown woman and I don't have to follow her rules. And she can't do anything about it.

I'd date quidscribis, because maybe she would show me around the beautiful places in her tropical paradise, and show me the hummingbirds. Unless the date was at my place, in which case I would show her all the beautiful malls in New Jersey.

Wait until you meet my mother and her mother! That will happen... Never, of course. I care too much about you for you to end up like that. [Razz]

Also, I'm not surprised you used the "it's cold so wear a jumper" example. [Razz]

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Perhaps if I am ever in town, we can meet up and you can introduce me.

(...suggesting a date with Tante and JH. Would you mind if I brought my husband along?)

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

You wouldn't want to; but you're welcome.

As long as you call it "platonic", or else it's humiliating for me... [Razz]

I'm confused; what the heck is so terrible about wearing a baseball cap? Do people in other countries not wear them? If not, it is because the women there have not discovered how nice it is to *not* have to fix your hair on vacation! [Wink]

*reminds herself to wear a pantsuit and lots of diamonds when she goes abroad*

hahahahahah! A joke that's funny, at last!

Spacey, it's not that there's a problem with the baseball caps themselves. I adore not having to do my hair. It's just the people under the hats. [Razz]

We beat the All-Blacks last year (it was that silly SA umpire that caused the Poms to just beat us in the end), but we've been the best in the world in Cricket for the past 15 years. There's no match for us!
