I admit it. I was/am a geek.

I DM'd a AD&D games for over 15 years.

While my wife and I didn't meet over a 20 sided dice, we did meet because her then boyfriend and I played D&D. He refused to teach her the game. I didn't refuse.

We played for many years, and though I swore never to show her any favoritism, I don't think I ever killed her character except this once, when I accidently....

Never mind. Some things are too painful to remember.

Anyway, Friday I was cleaning up some some old files I had kept in a box since college days. One of the file folders was full of D&D Characters we had created.

(Does anyone else keep their old characters? I claim I keep them for book ideas or if my children ever play, but the truth is destroying a character sheet feels too much like murder)

I was looking it over and saw the name:

SASHA

(For those of you who don't know, last year we adopted a son from Russia. His name is Sasha. We didn't give him that name.)

Wow, what a coincidence.

It was a character my wife created, but she didn't last long.

Yeah, Sasha D&D was a She.

That is not the worst part.

D&D Sasha was a Chaotic Neutral Thief who loved to cause trouble and get into things she shouldn't.

That sounds so like our son that I am getting worried. Maybe those Chick Tracts were right.

Heh. If playing D&D is a sin, surely it's minor one.

As far a Jack Chick goes... well... I never played D&D with hot young lesbians that know real magic. Nor do I know anybody who did. [Laugh]

Sasha is frequently mistaken for a female name in English, I've found. Obviously too many people didn't pay close enough attention to "Peter and the Wolf" in their childhood.

Mmm. D&D with hot young lesbians that know real magic.
Couldn't resist [Big Grin] .

Just how do you get Sasha from Alexander or Mitya or Dima from Dmitri?
And what's a good nickname for Vasily? I love Russian names.

No Jack Chick is right about D&D. He's also right about Harry Potter which is, after all, opening up a doorway that will lead untold millions of kids into hell. [Evil]

We have embraced the evil. We are playing a campaign with our 6 year old son! [Evil]

I'm glad, because I was getting tired of creating D&D characters for games that never "got off the ground". This is my first time playing since I was a teen and my DM was my older brother.

We played our first adventure last week! It was a blast.

OK Syn, you're scaring me. I have a co-worker, Dmitry, another co-worker who's husband's name is Vasily, and their son is named Sasha (from Alexander). [Angst]

I'm currently in two and a half games by email. I'm almost thrice dammed. Oh, 3.5 times damned if you count that other thing. [Angst]

You are in half a game?

Obviously, you weren't cool enough to get invited to those games. [Big Grin]

Weren't "Dragonlance" and "Ravenloft" both co-created by a Mormon?

My gosh...Chick was right....it's all connected! [Eek!]

Well, I haven't given up on Tom D's game yet, but we've been stalled for about a year now, I think. I really like my character in that game so as long as I can pretend we're on hiatus, I'm good.

My wife and I play and I've been a gamer geek for about 25 years or so now. Way too late to give up now.

Besides, I'm just waiting for when I can put my daughter on the miniatures board and proclaim "And then the titan jumps out at ya!!"

(The rule around the house is No D and D for the baby until she can read her own character sheet.)

But after this week's game, my wife did ask me why she wasn't getting any magic items as good as the other characters since I started GMing. Man, I think I've tried too hard to not show favoritism.

The things we get in the doghouse for...

How would one get started in playing D&D? I don't have any friends or anyone I know that knows how to play. And I don't know the rules or barely anything about the game. But it really sounds like something I'd enjoy alot. Help?

If playing D&D was wrong, I don't want to be right! I loved the game and still do (40 yrs old btw). I have my 13 year old into it as well. Yes, I did the geek thing, but I did the jock thing as well (baseball and soccer).

Ew. Why on earth would anyone want hot lesbian girls?

Trouble with D&D for new inductees is that it takes so long to make a character. And then to understand what's going on. For a new player, you have to have an excellent DM and a very patient set of co-players.

Sorry to hear that. I would find that very frustrating--like a book series that I love that may never be finished.

*hopes George RR Martin doesn't have a heart attack any time soon.*

Because they are hot lesbian girls. [Big Grin]

Well dear, I don't have a problem with the hot or lesbian parts of the phrase. Girls, however, are known carriers of cooties.

I have to tell you about a snippet of conversation I overheard from my two oldest.

4-yr-old-daughter: "This is a half crystal."

6-yr-old-son: "Oh, so like, it's mother was a crystal and it's father was a human?"

All those D&D half races... they always seem to be half-human, don't they?

Actually, Sasha can be female in Russian -- a nickname for "Alexandra."

The same way you get "Bob" from "Robert" or "Peggy" from "Margaret."

Mitya from Dmitry sounds right to me because the accent in Dmitry is on the mit part. Like Lizzy from Elizabeth, maybe. I love Russian names, too. Check out this site for Russian nomenclature.

D&D is surprisingly still popular among younger generations... I just got into it in June, and I think it's awesome. However, it's also considered a geek label. So I'm out of the closet. ^_^

Well, OK, but you missed the point. If I ran across somebody named "Vondella" I would assume it was a she for the same reason that I would assume "Sasha" was a she if I didn't know better: it's a convention of contemporary English, that names that end in -a are female names.

I am 42 and have played since I was 16.

My 13 y/o son and I play in a real life game every other week. He is my rules guru in my PBEM game.

Karl, only one person has died. The rest went off questing on their own.

Four characters of an original party of six just died horribly in my game, but all of the players seem to want to keep playing for some unfathomable reason. [Razz]
