I kept getting these fake email notifications from MySpace, and it was driving me crazy. Finally I signed up, hoping that would stop it. I didn't upload anything, just left it empty.
This didn't help, so I deleted it.
Then, duh, I realized what the problem was. The emails were always addressed to "Emily" and the email was one of my alternates that Outlook is set to check. So I thought, maybe there IS an actual MySpace account set up, using my email.
So I went to MySpace, put in the email addy and hit "Forgot Password". They sent me this chick's password.
She seems to be a real person. Young, grammar-challenged and sorta skanky.
I just want the emails to stop, but I would feel bad for deleting the account if she is, in fact, a real person. I could also change her email settings to not send notices, since she isn't getting them anyway - I am.
On the other hand, she is getting all sorts of 'ain't you a dirty girl' types of messages, and claims to be a dancer, so I'm not sure she IS real, and not some marketing ploy for a place called "New World".
Part of me would like to log on and tell off the dirty old men oogling her, but that's just the mothering instinct going off, and if she is a real person, then she probably wants to be oogled.
I really just want the spam to stop, but the potential for mischief is... extremely tempting. I can't send her a message by email, since her email addy is actually MINE.
Do you think she's real? What should I do?

Post on her board. If she's real and still cares, she'll see it. If she's not real, or if she doesn't care any more, she won't, and then you can just delete it.

The designers of the site should have implemented something that requires her to validate the receipt of an email at the address that she entered. If they don't do that, then they don't seem to be very reputable. If they do do that, then someone is doing something very fishy.
With all the problems with ID theft, etc, I think I'd probably just delete the account rather than enter into contact with anyone related to the site, especially if it looks like it might be used by a spammer or porno type organization. That might be rude, but I'd be willing to risk that for the sake of self-ID-preservation.

To further elaborate, if this is some kind of sexy lure set up to entrap someone, the only contact information apparently leads to YOU.
By the way, you can't read the link above without joining. Additionally, if you try to sign in and don't have an account set up, it doesn't say "No record on file" it says "You must be logged in to do that". So clearly the site designers aren't very thorough, to say the least.
Finally, the login process for this site is your email and a password. This means that if "dirty girl" is using the site with any regularity, she's signing on with your email, which she must know isn't her own email.
I'd definitely delete the site, then if you aren't particularly attached to it, I'd delete the email account in question, too, or at least change the password to it.

KarlEd: while I'll pass on commenting on the repute of the owners of MySpace, it is indubitably a legitimate social networking site with millions of real members.
Also, it would likely be very easy to circumvent such validation: use a valid email, then change the email in the profile. Almost everywhere allows such a change without further validation.

That could be, fugu13. I'm not familiar with it. However, it is pretty sloppy programming to respond to a failed login attempt with "you must be logged in to do that." So I have to be logged in to log in?

This might exonerate the site itself, but it makes me even more suspicious of the apparent user of the account (i.e. "Dirty Girl".) And regardless, the login for the account is tied to Olivia's email address, so the user has to know she's using someone else's email. Either that or she doesn't use the site anymore in which case deleting the account is no loss.
Olivia, if you're really concerned, you could contact the MySpace people directly and tell them the situation. If they are reputable, they will help you.

Olivet, I'd go with the mischeif. Start writing a few fun posts. She's joined a convent. She's getting a sex change surgery. She's decided to join a back-to-nature group and stop shaving her beard.
Screw around with people a bit. It'll brighten up your day. Clearly this girl realizes she has an illegitamite e-mail address on there and shows no remorse. If you'd prefer to be certain, see if she responds to contact.

I really doubt "Emily" is a real person. Most online friend-networking or personals sites have tons of fake entries for young, skanky, girls that are actually lures for some porn site or another.
If you delete the account and it turns out she is an actual person after all, she can always set up another myspace account with her own e-mail address. Somebody, whether young girl or online porn site, is using your e-mail address without your permission. You have no obligation to let them.

In all reality, though, I'd go with KarlEd's suggestion and contact the MySpace people about the misuse of your email address.

Since yesterday she changed her picture from one (supposedly of her) in a bathing suit to the one of a ballerina. She also changed her colors from hot pink and lime green to something less painful. Edit: No , sorry. Still hot pink with lime green words.
But I'm still getting the emails, and I hate 'em.
