Since we're on the theme of romantic movies and songs, I thought I'd ruin it by asking about your break up songs. (I watched VH1's '100 most Awesomely Bad Break up Songs' the other night, so I have a few in my head.)

We all have them. Which songs did you listen to over and over and over and over...which songs did you wish you had written because they perfectly described your broken relationship?

Mine?

Foolish Games by Jewel. I know, give me a break. I was in college in the late 90s.
Take a Look at Me Now Phil Collins
Always Be My Baby by Maraiah Carey. For those in denial.
To Love you More Celine Dion. For the jealous types who are also in denial.

Weird Al's "One More Minute" [Razz]

I had an entire mix tape that I had pathetically made full of love songs and break up songs that reminded me of this one guy.

Wait. I did that twice. Two different guys. For some reason I just liked to wallow and wallow and I'd listen to tapes like that over and over again. Yuck.

I love Weird Al relationship songs. "Melanie" and "I was Only Kidding" are two of my very favorites. [Smile]

When I told you I loved you, baby
When I said that I really cared.
When I told you that I can't live without you
that I'd follow you anywhere...

I was only KIDDING!

I had a tape that was all about being happy to be out of a bad relationship. I would listen to it all the time after getting out of the *really* bad one.

Songs like "I Saw the Sign" and "Victory" (by some 80's alternative band I can't recall.)

No Need to Argue by the Cranberries
Lover, You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley

See bev, I guess you're just a more positive person. My tapes were always meant to help me 'think of that person' *barf* and they ended up depressing me. [Big Grin]

Not specifically a break-up song, but more generally about not being able to get/keep a relationship: Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend by The Mr. T Experience.

He was the worst guy ever,
Reviled and despised.
But even Hitler had a girlfriend
So why can't I?
Why can't I?

Oh! And for people asking about your sig.other after a break-up there's The Vandals' My Girlfriend's Dead.

Engimatic, My Girlfriend's Dead is a good one.

Posted by Enigmatic (Member # 7785) on :

Yeah, the Vandals have a lot of good relationship songs. The New You is also appropriate for this thread.

Every time I call the Old You,
The New You answers the phone.
I just want to talk to Old You,
But New You says you're not home.

I also second the Weird Al songs previously mentioned.

Narnia, there was no need to wallow over that particular relationship. I ended it, and I never regretted ending it once.

But I also tend to hate myself when I am wallowing, so while I may wallow in some ways, I don't do it musically for some reason. [Smile]

"Here I Go Again on my Own" by Whitesnake.

I know, give me a break. I was in college in the late 80s. [Wink]

Poor Heart by Phish
I Feel Free by Cream
Both are very liberating.

Also two excellent breakup albums are Led Zeppelin I (for the "good riddance; women are evil" type of breakup) and "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" by Derek and the Dominoes (for the wistful "please come back to me" type of breakup). After each of my two most major breakups of my college years I went on a roadtrip, and I just happened to have Zeppelin I on the first trip and Layla on the second. They fit the mood perfectly, and are still on the top of my list for perfect musical choices.

"Gunning Down Romance" by Savage Garden. Hey, I was born in 88, I have a right to like things like that. But it's true...

I'm gunning down romance
It never did a thing for me
but heartache and misery
ain't nothing but a tragedy

etc., etc., about how love is only a chemical reaction in your brain and stuff like that. For those who are in denial but are masking it with the tough person attitude.

The most classic breakup song ever: Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover."

The most cheesy, overplayed breakup song ever: Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird."

Edited to add: bev, Ace of Base?

I Saw the Sign was definitely Ace of Base. Not sure about Victory, though.

I like Jamie Cullum's version of Lover, You Should Have Come Over. I've been listening to his Twentysomething album the last few days.

The Saddest Song I've Got - "There's nothing left to say/said it anyway"
Pavement Cracks - "I would have done anything/for happiness to bring"

. . .or Tori Amos. . .

Northern Lad - "I love his secret places/But I can't go anymore"
Baker Baker - "Well I ran from him in all kinds of ways/Guess it was his turn this time"

. . .or, for humor and sarcasm, Barenaked Ladies.

Leave - "How am I supposed to remember you/When you won't let me forget?"

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is Poison, not GnR.

Obscure Break Up Song Choice: "Tea and Sympathy", Jars of Clay

Weird Al suggestions are greatness, as is "Love Stinks" by the J Geils Band

Jo Dee Messina's "My Give a Damn's Busted" can be very liberating

Keri Noble has several excellent ones for every situation from "I can't believe you have to move away" ("Piece of My Heart"), to "I really regret letting go" ("Dream About You"), to "I'm glad you're gone" ("Let It Rain"), to the only really tender "I'm just not sure I'm ready for a serious commitment" song I know of ("About me")

But my favorite is a little self-serving: I helped write a very good one called "Somehow". When we played it just right live, there would be several seconds of dead silence (the good kind) followed by wild applause. It was cool.

Somehow
Lee Caropresi and Jim Scott

I've been thinking 'bout
A girl that I once knew
She said I was the only one

And I can't figure out
What I'm gonna do
'Cause it seems the light is gone

But I will make it through, somehow

I remember when
I last saw her face
It keeps me hangin' on

But it's so lonely in
This cold and weary place
I feel I can't go on

But I will make it through, somehow

I've been driving by
The place we used to live
Feels like holy ground

I've pleaded with the sky
Gave all I could give
To make her come around

But I will make it through, somehow

I like the: "I've been driving by / the place we used to live" bit. That's nice.

The classic for me is Pearl Jam's Black: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life / I know you'll be a star / in somebody else's sky / buy why, why, why can't it be mine?"

Also Tool's H: "The snake behind me hisses what my damage could have been / my blood before me begs me open up my heart again."

Ben Folds' Gone: "I know that you went straight to someone else / while I worked through all this s*#%! here by myself."

A Perfect Circle's Passive: "Why can't you turn and face me? / You f@#*ing disappoint me / Passive-aggressive bulls*#%!"

I actually find the first Linkin Park record decent for this purpose. Once after a breakup I found myself living alone in the middle of nowhere, so I learned to scream along to some of the songs on that record. It was very theraputic. I like to listen to angry music after breakups.

kojabu- "The Hardest Part of Breaking Up...is getting back your stuff" is by 2gether. They were an MTV created boyband for a mockumentary, and their music was so popular that I heard they became a real boyband after that. Anyway....

I second that nomination, and add:
"You're Pretty Good Looking...for a girl" by the White Stripes. It's just a good I don't need you anymore kind of breakup song.

For the more bitter breakup, anything by Brand New, especially their album that starts with "the Bullet or the Chapstick." It's very bitter against girls, but it works for general breakup rage against guys, too.

A great one in general is "Swing Swing" by the All American Rejects

For the I feel used breakup *ashamed to admit I like this song* "Behind These Hazel Eyes" by Kelly Clarkson

And my favorite breakup song of all time:
"Why Bother" by Weezer
quote:
Maybe we can get together.
Maybe you can break my heart next summer.

Why Bother? It's gonna hurt me.
It's gonna kill when you desert me...

And I was listening to one of my neglected Shakira albums this morning and realized I had forgotten what a fabulous break up song "Si Te Vas" is. Its basic message is "you're leaving me for that hag?"

Here's the best of it:
Si te vas, si te vas, y me cambias
Por esa bruja, pedazo de cuero
No vuelvas nunca mas
Que no estaré aquí

Toda escoba nueva siempre barre bien
Luego vas a ver desgastadas las cerdas
Cuando las arrugas le corten la piel
Y la celulitis invada sus piernas

I think mine would be "I Know Him So Well" from "CHESS", the musical. Wow... a great song. Two women singing about a man they both love but can never have. Music by ABBA and lyrics by Tim Rice. Totally my song.

Boyfriend #1: "Where were you when I needed you" by the Bangles. "The feelings I felt I don't feel any more for you, this time I'm leaving open the door for you.."

Boyfriend #2: I'll set you free. Also by the Bangles. "I remember words that fell like coins into a wishing well."

Is "I know him so well" sung by two women? I thought the show was about one woman trying to pick between two men. I've heard it live at an Elaine Page concert. I don't know the title, but I like the other one from Chess that winds up with "And if that girl I knew should ask my advice, I wouldn't hesitate she needn't ask me twice: 'Go now' I'd tell her that for free, trouble is the girl is me."

Heck ya Mothertree! I actually performed in CHESS back in '94, Dearborn Players Guild. Time of my life.

CHESS is about the US vs the USSR, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Florence, woman from the US Chess Team falls in love with Anatole from the Russian Team. He defects from the USSR to join her and she leaves her abusive lover Eddie, the US chess champion...a copy of Bobby Fisher. When she leaves Eddie she sings "Someone Elses Story"/"And if that girl I knew should ask my advice..." But then we find out that Anatole is actually married....and that Florence's long lost father is being held as ransom to get Anatole back. The US champion, Eddie, secretly joins forces with the KGB & CIA to sabotage Florence and Anatole's relationship. Finally Florence sees some bad traits in Anatole too.. his obsession over Chess and winning... culminating in her visiting his wife, Svetlana... and together they sing "I Know Him So Well".

Things go downhill from there... it's kinda like Les Miserable... everyone either dies or is rent apart from each other. Florence and Anatole break up... Eddie tries one last time to blackmail them both using CIA and KGB info (both governments don't like Florence and Anatole's actions) and also try and win Florence back...only to have them both cast him away (there are some bi tendencies in Eddie) to his despair. Anatole leaves his wife for good...only to sacrifice the final Chess tournament to try and get Florence's father back as part of a deal with the Russian government. Turns out it's all a ruse by the CIA and KGB... the man who was supposed to be Florence's father is actually an American agent and Anatole is taken back behind the Iron Curtain... leaving Florence all alone.

My new girlfriend is better than you
she's got bigger breasts and a higher IQ

Is it sad that I went and downloaded half these songs after reading about them? I'm pathetic...

Nope. It's healthy. Wallow in it for awhile, and then get over it. Trust me, I've been through a lot of break-ups. [Wink]

Telp! You were in Chess! OMG I Hate you! I listened to that eeeeendlessly in high school. I could probably sing it from beginning to end now (if I could sing anyway.)

I always wanted to see it performed... and never did....

(note: This is my 3004th post. 3004 was my phone number at my first job where I had a phone. Too bad I JUST did a landmark.)

"stupid kid"
by alkaline trio

"remember when I said
I love you well
forget it I take it back
I was just a stupid kid back then
I take back every word that I said"

"fine without you"
by alkaline trio

"I'll be just fine without you"

and the top break up song

"she took him to the lake"
by alkaline trio

"but then she went away
and she's not coming back
and I'm pretty sure that boy's stayin in tonight"

I HIGHLY recommend download these songs and tons of others by alkaline trio

they are my favorite band ever
and I believe them to be incredible

some songs do use harsh language

but they're amazing

ok I'll disengage fanboy mode now

In Sadding Around

quote:
Sleeping off the last five years takes another five.
Recovery in lieu of being here right now.
When I throw myself at your feet,
You know it's to be walked on.
We're breaking up every single night.

Fireman

quote:
Dreamed I was a fireman.
I just smoked and watched you burn.
Dreamed I was an astronaut.
I shot you down like a juggernaut.
Dreamed we were still going out.
Had that one a few times now.
Woke up to find we were not.
It's good to be awake.

Sluttering (May 4th)

quote:
I'd saw through your wrist to find a better trap that fits.
I'd saw through your traps to find a better you.
A part of you that lasts.
I saw through your trap and into my own wrists.
Saw we were through, red ribbons spill to blue:
A sight to sore your eyes.

Sea Foam Green

quote:
We met in rain, you asked me in.
Seemed like a good sign.
Now I need a guillotine
to get you off my mind.

All by one of my favourite bands, Jawbreaker.

I also really enjoy Stupid Kid. It is very appropriate for a relationship I had in high school.

Alkaline Trio have been pretty influenced by Jawbreaker in some of their older stuff so if you like them, you should check out Jawbreaker.

How about "I will always love you" by Whitney Houston?

Yeah, if you're not already broken up with that one, you're about to be! {shudder}

Misunderstanding - Phil Collins (Genesis) actually "Duke" is basically a breakup album.

It is definitely "Separate Ways" by Journey.

Not really about breaking up, per se, but I always think of The Cure's "Burn" from the Crow Sountrack:

"'Just paint your face,' the shadows smile,
slipping me away from you..."

Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan

"You've got a lot of nerve
To say you are my friend.
When I was down you just stood there grinning."

The Beatles - Run For Your Life

quote:
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Snow Patrol. "Ways and Means." Oh, man. That was SO my last relationship.

"Breathing fire was never this much fun, so there's a dark side in us all."

And I listened to the Punk Statik Paranoia album by Orgy. A lot. Even though that CD doesn't sound like Orgy at all.

Orgy is sex on wheels. Punk Statik Paranoia is Jay Gordon being angry and emo because his girlfriend dumped him for doing too many drugs, or something.

Oh, Jay.

"I'm A Loser", Beatles

[Not sure if that's the title; simply the lyrics]

"Every little thing she does is magic" by The Police. not a good song after a breakup.

"Summer, Highland Falls" by Billy Joel. Better, still keeps me wallowing in self-pity, though.

I've never been good with breakups or turn-downs.

Isn't asking about one's favorite break-up song akin to asking about one's favorite punch in the face?
