This is Raia.

Raia is considering cutting her hair to about shoulder length.

Raia has never cut her hair off before, and is (quite frankly) scared stiff.

Raia's hair has a tendency to go poof, contrary to what's seen in these photographs. These photos were taken primarily because Raia's hair decided to behave.

Raia is also incapable of talking about this for long periods of time without breaking out into shivers, so please keep comments gentle.

All in favor, say aye.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

After much thought, I decided, aye, but a personal recommendation, don't get it cut any shorter than your shoulder length.

In fact, give it an inch past shoulder length. I think that extra inch would come in handy when trying to work with it, style wise.

Posted by JaimeBenlevy (Member # 6222) on :

I second the inch past shoulder length. I think that would look good on you.

Posted by Uprooted (Member # 8353) on :

You have beautiful hair! It is gorgeous the way it is, it would be gorgeous an inch past shoulder length--and I also think it would be gorgeous in a layered, face-framing cut going "poof" all over the place! But that would probably freak you way out to even consider . . .

This is your most picture on the Web site. Look at the comments:

quote:
You have lovely hair, lady.
Said by Annie, who has her own hair fan-club.
quote:
Great hair
quote:
she is pretty, and does have lovely hair
quote:
Her hair has a fan club
quote:
I love the hair, too.
quote:
What Annie said!
quote:
Wow Raia! I love your hair! [...] *plays with Raia's hair*
quote:
*Joins the Shani hair fan club*
On the other hand, the picture you showed me as a child was so sweet. I don't know how that hair would fit you today, but I think that's as short as you should go. Or maybe just cut a few inches at a time? Think of the worst that could happen and the best that could happen, then try and avoid the worst in a way of achieving the best.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

(Actually, the hair with a fan club is mine, not Annie's.)

Thanks for your comments, everyone... I will consider them. As much as I can without bursting into tears or breaking out or something!

I say no. Your long hair is simply gorgeous.

However, I have very curly frizzy blond hair and I never let it grow longer than chin length because looking after it becomes impossible.

<Concerned> Why does thinking about your hair make you emotional?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Well, it's not so much thinking about my hair as thinking about cutting it that makes me emotional. I've never done it before, and it really, honestly scares me. Stupid as that sounds.

Also, I forgot to mention that my dad will practically disown me if I cut it off. But he'd get over it, so I guess that's not fully a consideration.

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

I bet if you shaved all your hair off, you would be a lot happier in the long run.

Posted by Beanny (Member # 7109) on :

Your hair is great, but it's summer now, and wouldn't it also be nice to see how it is with your hair shoulder-length?
Advice: if your hair tends to puff, try to comb it only when it's all wet and the tie it back until it dries. When you brush puffy hair when it's dry, it usually gets puffier.
Another thing: what's the worst scenerio? Your haircut will be terrible... But after a month you've got long hair again...so wht not give it a try?

You'll look great either way though

<Deleted at SS's request and personal bad feelings for silly joke.>

I reckon that you shouldn't cut it, Raia, because I've still got to speak to your father about the Seven Years' War - and if he'll disown you I'll never get a chance to learn more about it. Also, how come your sister got her hair cut and remained alive and "owned"?

Well if thinking about cutting your hair makes you emotional ... maybe your subconscious is trying to tell you something?

Why do you want to cut it? Where / why did the idea start?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

My sister got her hair cut yesterday. She got it to about shoulder length, and it looks awesome. She and I have similar hair, though mine is curlier and a bit more unruly than hers. (Also mine is red, but that's slight irrelevant.) My dad wasn't as attached to her hair as he is to mine, and besides, she's cut it many times before.

I know you're not an idiot, Howard, so please drop the victimization stupidity.

Dropped.

Posted by firebird (Member # 1971) on :

I hope you don't mind the questions. I'm trying to understand your dilema.

How did admiring your sister's new hairstyle turn into 'I should cut my hair too'?

(PS you look awesome anyway)

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

No, I don't mind at all! Thanks for your compliments, too, I didn't say that. [Smile]

Maya both looks really good, and says it's really comfortable, and much easier to handle. Her hair, although poofy, hardly poofs, even though she cut it, which gives me hope (despite mine being slightly worse than hers). That's how that happened. I guess that just triggered something that I had been subconsciously considering for a while. Her cutting her hair was actually my idea.

I apologize for perhaps being overly angry and rude towards you, Jonathon.

I have a friend who has hair similar to yours and she cut it pretty short - chin length - for awhile. That was very poofy. It's longer now, but she can generally keep it under control. She often pulls back a bit of hair into a small ponytail and leaves some down, which seems to control the poofiness.

Your hair is very pretty, Raia. I know what a pain long hair can be--mine is just a bit longer than yours, and I've been wanting to cut it for about a year now. (My hubby disagrees.)

My daughter also had "poofy" hair, and she's tried it at all lengths--and she always hates it. I think she'll like it more when she's older.

Anyway, IMO, go ahead and cut it. You're so young that it'll grow back quickly if you change your mind and decide you don't like it shorter.

Have you considered giving the cut-off part to Locks for Love? They have a website that gives directions.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Oh, if I cut it, I would certainly donate it. My sister did the same yesterday.

Posted by Beanny (Member # 7109) on :

You mean they'll use it for wigs on people who have chemo and lost their hair? What do they do with donated hair? And who is "they", anyway?

Posted by Kiwi (Member # 7982) on :

I vote for inch-below-shoulders. I think it would look great, and it won't be so heavy. Besides, you'll never know til you try, and if you don't like it, it will grow back. Inch-below-shoulders isn't really that short, and is long enough to tie back if it does get out of control. [Smile]

I don't think your hair would go poof at shoulder length although I wouldn't know- I have dead straight hair. I don't think it would be the end if you cut your hair to that length and your head will feel so light!

Posted by sarahdipity (Member # 3254) on :

If you decide to go shorter go shorter progressively. I went from hair that was waist length to hair that was above my shoulders. That was way too much of a shock. I think at your shoulder blades would be a nice first step. It's still long and will quickly go back to being very long. But is a nice incremental change.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

I say that if you choose to go so - do it first of all just-below half-back, then shoulder-blades, then chinwards.

I plan to do the same, if I ever get around to cutting it. I have 10 inches of my daughter's hair from a year ago that I plan to mail off at the same time. Locks for Love is such a wonderful organization! And as Jonathan said,

In looking at your hair's curliness, I have a question that you might ask a stylist before proceeding.

Right now, it appears that the hair near the roots is basically straight (or straighter than the rest of the hair). I'd wonder if this is just due to the weight of the hair pulling the curl out of the top part.

If so, when you cut it, you might have to deal with some seriously curly hair higher up your scalp line.

That's not a big deal but it might come as a surprise.

So, I'd ask a stylist who is familiar with your kind of hair and see what is suggested.

Anyway, just remember that even if you hate the look of it after you cut it, your hair will grow back. It's not permanent, if that helps you feel more comfortable.

I like your hair the way it is. However, if it's causing you a lot of trouble, then you might want it shorter for your convenience. I also have long, curly hair that tends to frizz (Here's what mine looks like). I've found that if I only brush it when it's wet and then let it air-dry, it stays in curly bunches rather than becoming a cloud. Also, if I put it in a tight ponytail while it's still wet, the hair around my head stays straight when it dries.

I've thought about cutting my hair, too, since it catches on everything and it's heavy. But I still like it enough to keep it, for now. Good luck with your decision. I'm glad that you'll donate it if you do cut it. That's very kind of you [Smile]

Raia, my dear, cut it if you like, but when it is shorter, it will probably look fuller and curlier. If you are not already using it, you should try Frizz Ease hair serum, to keep it well-behaved.

But, man alive, you have got some awesome hair. You are a real cutie, chicky! Would you donate your hair to me, so I can have a Raia Sheitl ? I'll be the hottest lady on my side of the mechitza. .

I say go for the gold and chop it short. Everyone needs a change. It can be very refreshing. You might look nice with pretty short hair, actually. Around the ears or a bit shorter, I think, with maybe some layers or something.

I seem to be alone in this opinion though.

Raia, I think your hair would look fantastic if you cut it. I also wouldn't worry about "poofing." It's very easy to control with hair like yours and it takes very little maintenance. My best friend has hair exactly like yours and it was down to her knees when we were in high school. She cut it shoulder length in college and it's now so gorgeous that strangers come up to her and ask her where she gets in done.

First, get rid of your brushes. Curly-haired people should never use a brush. Use a comb and then only when your hair is wet. After you wash it, simply run a comb through it and put an anti-frizz product in it (I'll ask my friend what she uses). Let it air dry and you're done. This will give you gorgeous ringlets.

If you do decide to cut it, make sure that the stylist is experienced cutting curly hair. As always, I recommned Aveda salons.

I have to say, however, you don't sound ready. Make sure that this is something you're sure you want to do.

BTW, here's a link to Locks of Love: http://www.locksoflove.org/

If you only cut some off, you can always decide to cut it shorter later. If you cut too much off, you can let it grow back out. If you're uncertain, remember that one of these takes longer than the other.

Raia, I vote for cutting your hair.

You look especially fantastic here and here. You have a beautiful face and a very elegant neckline. It would be a shame to hide your face and neck under so much hair.

If having shorter hair means you will put your hair up more often (I'm assuming it is easier to put your hair up with shorter hair), then by all means, cut the hair!

Of course, it takes a certain special kind of person to pull off long hair. I've seen girls with really long hair that looked so completely vain that it caused a spike on my cringe meter. Raia, however, is definately one of the girls who pulls it off perfectly.

Raia,

As everyone else has said...you have B-E-A-UTIFUL hair. I also have curly hair that tends to make me look like a lion at times, but with the proper care you can take care of that. Usually the longer your hair is the more it is weighted down. If you cut it your curls will perk up, I actually just cut my hair and I love it.

Tameing the mane (as me and my roommates call it)

1)wearing it curly...Towel dry, add some friz control product (whatever brand you choose), A little hair gel, maybe some hair spray (I dont usually use the hair spray, but sometimes it helps) and a blowdryer with a difuser should do the trick. (You can do some trial and error to find the best way that works for you)

2)Going straight...Towel dry, add some frizz control, blow dry, and use the master of all hair irons THE CHI (it is truely a gift sent from god).

I know this sounds like a lot of work but it is a sacrafice we must pay. Plus once you get the hang of it, it is no prob!

Now I'm starting to get curious about what Raia's hair would look like cut short. This is making me waver a tiny bit in my previous no cutting opinion.

Posted by firebird (Member # 1971) on :

Raia, as someone with curley hair there is one thing you should bear in mind.

Firstly ... Curley hair is at it's most beautiful when it is loose and the curls can be seen.

So, either you have to go short enough that you can't put your hair up at all or stay long enough that when you put there is still enough that can hang down to show off the curls. In practice, this means either chin to middle on neck length (when dry) or below the shoulder blades (when dry).

Just to echo the other advise on looking after Curley hair. Good haircut is the most important. Then only comb it when wet, I use all the Frizz Ease products which are excellent and then I find letting it dry naturally is the best.

Good luck.

I think you would look really smashing with a cut, Raia, but I definitely don't think you should cut because someone else wants you to (or keep it long because someone else wants you to, either).

I'm getting the vibe that you don't really want to cut it, but you might have been looking for some support for not cutting. If that is so, then yes, you have lovely hair, and it looks good on you as it is. [Smile]

Why is it that Tante gets dibs on Raia-hair-for-sheitlach? Stupid Pacific time. [Razz]

Raia, I had hair almost as long as yours is, and with similar thickness and body, when I was just about your age. I wanted the split ends trimmed off, and got a friend (who was very good with hair) to do it. She talked me into taking 2-3 inches off.

She cut off EIGHT INCHES. The fact that she is still alive has more to do with my shock at the time than anything else. [Wink]

However. It looked really good that length (about shoulder length when dry). And I have never grown it longer than shoulder-length since. It's just so easy to care for.

I think long hair is beautiful, but shoulder-length still qualifies. And the longer it is, the harder it is to take care of.

But don't cut it unless/until you are ready! There is nothing quite so annoying as people complimenting you on your new haircut, when every time they do you want to cry. Or scream.

Raia,
Your hair is lovely and I definitely think you should keep it long. The only question is how long. If it is so difficult to manage that you keep it tied back most of the time I’d definitely say get some cut off. I think that you only get the best from long hair if it can be worn down. If you are able to wear it down most of the time anyway and you like it, then just get a trim.

Raia, I was in a similar position about two years ago - my hair was almost down to my waist, and I'd never gotten a really drastic cut or had it shorter than a few inches past my shoulders. Mine's not curly, but it's very thick and has the potential to be kinda wavy (read: usually poofy/frizzy).

I finally decided to cut mine after several months of pondering and panicking and nagging my friends for advice (they were split between "NO!" and "Go for it!" (and my dad was against it too)). I'd just really wanted a change, plus I wanted to know what I'd look like with shorter hair. So I had about 12 inches chopped off (and donated), up to about an inch or so above my shoulders. Here's the before picture, taken literally right before I got it cut. I don't have any immediate after pictures (I dislike pictures of me in general), but this one is from a few months after the cut, in its non-blow-dried and product-free state. (And also in Paris! [Big Grin] )

Cutting it was vastly traumatizing, but I'm really glad that I did, because if I hadn't, I'd still be driving myself crazy about it right now. Plus it's a lot less hassle to dry and such, and if I want to change it, I can do so without worrying about "ruining" years' work of growing it out. [Smile]

For you - I say go for it! Your really long hair, beautiful though it is, steals attention from your gorgeous face. And I totally agree with Beren - your prom pics are great!

Plus when it's shorter, it'll be a lot easier to keep the poof factor under control. Do you usually blow dry it, or just air dry? I have friends with curly curly hair that always looks awesome, and their tricks are to use a wide tooth comb when it's wet (only then), and then to blow dry it with a diffuser on low heat. There are products involved somewhere too, but I'm not sure about the details there. I'd definitely check out the Frizz-Ease serum, as well as their shampoo and conditioner.

Be brave, Raia!! Make the appointment! If you're still really scared when the day comes, then just cut off the minimum needed for donation - you can always cut more off later. Or grow it back out. [Smile]

If it were me, I would cut it back in large part because I know longer hair is harder to control and keep neat. My own hair is very straight and thin, and I've discovered that if I keep it around shoulder length, it's the best I can get. Shorter than that and it just flies away; longer and it hangs limp and completely impossible to style. That's when it lives in claw clips and scrunchies.

With how much hair you have, Locks of Love would absolutely LOVE you!! And some salons will cut your hair for free in exchange for your LoL donation. Check their site (www.locksoflove.org) for more information.

Whatever you look like, you stay a very beautiful woman. Your hair are very nice but it's not their lenghts who give you such a charming face, but the way you arrange them. As you want our opinion, i'd like to give you mine. My favorite picture of you is this.

Why ? Because you have a very sweet smile, of course, and moreover, your hair are pleasurable done. you'll notice their lenghts are not visible.

In addition to that, I'd like to refer to a very beautiful friend who cut their hairs although they are long. And she decided to have just under one centimeter. It change her style, but i love it. She looks like the french actrice Cécile de France.

Pretty. [Wink]

*Edit* : As you are and you'll be even with short hair. [Wink]
