The city of New York has not been blessed by a visit from The Rivka in many a moon. This will soon change.

I just booked my tickets on Jet Blue. I will arrive the morning of Friday, September 9 and leave the afternoon of Wednesday, September 14. Saturday is out, and the wedding I'm going for is on the 13th. So that's out (except maybe early in the day) too.

Other than that, my schedule is currently pretty open. That will change (I have lots of people I want to see), but y'all get first crack.

Anyone interested in getting together?

Sunday?!! I can meet you wherever you are in New York, or we can stomp around your old stomping grounds in New Jersey.

One question, Rivka.

Why?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(Um, maybe the wedding?)

Long live New York! Capital of the world!
[Smile]
Have fun Rivka. *smooches*

Wow. I'll be out there September 7-9. Maybe I'll pass you in the airport!

Tante, Sunday sounds good. [Smile] As for where, I'm not sure yet where I will be for Shabbos (possibly Monsey). The other consideration is if other Hatrackers want to join us.

Um . . . mph, what kq said. One of my friends from high school is getting married. She is really happy that I will be there -- said it would make her night if I came. How could I not?

Telpy, thanks. [Smile] Yeah, NYC is a fun place to visit. I've been wanting to for a while.

afr, it seems unlikely, since I'll be getting in at crack-of-dawn-thirty (also known as 5 am). I assume your flight leaves considerably later in the day? And you are likely booked, since a Wednesday-Friday trip must be business?

We're five hours from New York...

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

adam, cool. [Smile] And while we do have quite a number of kosher restaurants out here, we are currently sorely lacking in most authentic kosher ethnic-type food: Thai, Indian, etc.

Besides, nowhere has the plethora of kosher restaurants that NYC does. [Big Grin]

mack, I wouldn't ask you to drive 10 hours just to see lil' ol me. But look, other people are going to be there too! [Wink]

Do we have any other NYC area (or nearby) Hatrackers who are likely to need to be scheduled around as well? I confess to not being up to date on these things, and I'd like to be able to get together with as many of y'all as we can manage.

It's about six weeks too early for me. [Frown]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Aw. That's ok, you're going to come out to SoCal sometime soon.

*hopeful* Right?

Rivka, I would love the chace to meet you, adn I am only about 3-4 hours from NYC, but it will have to wait...

JenniK has her Disney audition that weekend so we will be in FL. [Big Grin]

Maybe next time!

I hope so! There are a few places I want/need to go before, though, so I probably can't before next spring. Maybe March or April?

Rivka, yeah, it's sort of a business trip. Actually, it's to pick up a reward for our annual report at a banquet. So, a little funner than a business trip.

We're not flying out on the 9th until about 4:30 pm local time. I'm not going to try to meet up with anybody out there. I just thought it was a cool coincidence.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Yay! Kosher Indian food! [Big Grin] And Sunday outingness sounds great to me. [Smile]

afr, it is. Like ships, passing in the busy airport. [Wink]

Oh, yay! We have a couch if you need a place to stay, Katie!

What are the ships doing at the airport? Are there jets at the harbor?

I adore Indian food. Manhattan also has Japanese Kosher food that is nice. Fancy white-table cloth restaurants, French, Italian, Chinese (of course), Middle Eastern, and lots and lots of Kosher Pizza. My son's favorite Kosher restaurant in New York right now is "My Favorite Dessert Place", which is a dairy restaurant with yummy pasta dishes, and, of course, desserts.

But, neh, I don't know if that matters. I don't think he's invited. And even if he was invited, he has school on Sundays. Yeshiva schedules.

Posted by Little_Doctor (Member # 6635) on :

I could possibly be around. I only need one more Jatraquero to become real!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Cool. I like making people real. [Big Grin]

Tante, I'm sure your son is invited. But as you say, with yeshiva schedules, it may not matter. Japanese sounds yummy too.

Hmmm...could be a new england clump road trip...

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

What, exactly, do I need to do to become real? A la Velveteen Rabbit, I've already had a small boy say that he loves me and that I'm real. But I get the feeling that "Hatrack Real" has different qualifications.

I hope a scavenger hunt is not involved. I hate hunting for scavengers.

Meet two Hatrackers who have already had Realness bestowed upon them.

I love the idea of seeing all the NE Hatrackers -- what a bonus! [Big Grin]

Tante, I'm not sure if you can ever become real, simply because meeting hatrackers in person usually requires spending a bit of time not actually posting on Hatrack!

LOL

Not true, you could bring a laptop, and post while doing it.... [Big Grin]

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

I'd ignore that, but then, if I ignored stuff, my post count wouldn't be as full and lush as it is. Anyway, I see that rivka's just made it to 15,000; I have just a bit more than a tenth of that. I'm trying to catch up before we meet.

Ooops, I meant to note that rollover. Ah well.

So, sounds like at least some of us will be getting together at some time on Sunday, September 11th? And adam is going to plan some outingness, and at some point during (or before, or after) the outingness, kosher food of some not-yet-determined ethnicity will be consumed.

Is that right?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

"Us people"? *giggle*

I don't know, what would you suggest?

Central Park! The Met, walking around and just enjoying the city. But especially Central Park.

I'd come down for a visit but I'm in a wedding in Chicago that weekend. mmm Chicago mmm New York

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Who knew September was such a popular time to get married?

Thanks for the suggestions, sarah. Sad that I'll miss meeting you.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

*sob* I want to be there.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Oh, that would be fabulous!! I haven't even really thought about that trip, but I need to research it and get the ball rolling at work to make sure it happens. I'm not even sure of the dates at this point. I'll make a thread when I am.

I'll stop derailing rivka's thread now. <sorry>

The Met sounds great. Looks like they have several interesting-looking exhibitions at the moment.

And of course people want to get married between Tisha b'Av and Rosh Hashana -- but there are two weeks in August yet! [Wink]

The Met closes at five on Sundays, so go in the AM!

Ohhh I hope I can make it O_O

That's it! I'm rescheduling my annual dentist check up for another day! The sacrifices I make -- putting off my appointment with dentristry for a date with destiny!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*blink* Your dentist has appointments on Sundays?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

*blink* Yours doesn't?

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

I'm sure someone thought of this already but just in case... given the date involved, you might want to check and see what kind of anniversary remembrance type events are happening that could potentially interfere with your plans?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I just realized...I read these dates wrong....Jenni and I will be here for those, so perhaps we could make it...

I won't know for a while though, it depends on how expensive vacation in FL is, and if we get jobs right away. [Big Grin]

Whoo Hoo!

No. In my experience, most don't.

Good point, Goody. I'll take adam's word (as a local) for the lack of potential problems.

Do we want to go to any sort of commemorative events?

Kwea, I'd love to meet you two, if it works out. [Smile]

I'll be in New York the 4th and 5th, but by the weekend I'll already be back in Massachusetts. :/ Oh well...

A quick suggestion of what to do...

If you really want to do some tourist stuff you might want to buy a ticket for the double decker bus. It takes you all over the city and you can get off and on as you please. I was born in NY (but moved to florida at a young age) and have visited the city countless times to visit family and see some shows, but it was not until this summer I actually did the tourist thing. We went on the double decker and I saw more of NY in one day then I saw my whole life. It really is a good time.

They have people all over the city selling tickets, you should check it out.

Dont forget to see a show!! TKTS located at Time Square and South Street Sea Port sells tickets for that days shows 50% off. (I got tickets for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for 50 dollors)

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

I would rather not go to a commemorative event. I remember just fine what happened that day; it is burned into my memory.

Seeing a Broadway show is pricey, even at the half-price tickets, and it is unlikely that we would be able to get seats together, and we certainly wouldn't have the opportunity to chit chat and get to know eachother during the show.

I vote for more light and social settings -- restaurant, park, museum, walking those fascinating NY streets, and shopping in those fascinating NY shops.

The bus tour could be fun, though.

Not a mandate, just your Shvester's two cents.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

We will try, but at best we would only be able to make a day trip of it...although if we CAN swing it we might ride down with Mack or something....we could meet up part way, that way we don't all have to spend an arm and a leg to park in the city...

If we do have to pay, I hereby nominate Nate's arm...I've seen him fence, and trust me he doesn't really use it well as it is. [Big Grin]

Other than to knock over the game board if he is losing...right Jamie? [Big Grin]

Tante, I don't think anyone would have taken it as a mandate....no matter how many times you post each day. [Razz]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I have no real interest in a commemorative event either; but neither am I against going to one. Just wanted to float the notion.

I very much want to see a Broadway show while I am there, but I agree it's really not a good group thing. Maybe I'll do that Monday sometime.

The Met sounds good; restaurants (hey, we gotta eat! [Big Grin] ) sound very good; and shopping is fun, especially in NYC.

But most of those things I can do Monday or Wednesday as well; for Sunday I'm primarily interested in spending time with y'all. [Smile]

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

rivka, Jenni and I both have Mondays off, so we might make it an overnight thing....if so we both LOVE Broadway. I don't know what our budget will look like then, but it is a thought... [Wink]

Cool. We'll see how it goes. [Smile]

*Bump*

So, we're meeting next Sunday, Sept 11 in Manhattan?

Let's figure on some details -- Manhattan is a big place. Any good suggestions for the where and when?

And how will we know each other? I had an idea; since we are all Hatrackers, we can all wear hats.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Oh, good. I keep meaning to bump this. Thanks!

I, uh, still am not entirely sure where I will be coming from . . . I haven't reached my cousins in Monsey yet. Possibly, I'll be staying the whole trip with a friend from HS who lives in Brooklyn (and who I have spoken to). But I hope to reach other people tomorrow.

So maybe I'll know tomorrow night.

Well, your Shvester, Esther, is coming from New Jersey, sans Son of Shvester, who, it turns out, is away all weekend on a back-to-school getaway in the Poconos.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Probably the train to Penn Station, but it doesn't make a difference to me where we meet -- I can get anywhere.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Plus then we can use the Penn Station worldgates.

There is a (kind of expensive) kosher restaurant called Abigael's. It is a big space, white-tablecloth place. And although the menu is pricey, they have this thing called "Coffee Theater", which is coffee and desserts served in a showy, ostentatious, and supposedly entertaining fashion. This might be fun.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I know about that place! Jeff Nathan used to (or maybe still does?) have a cooking show on PBS that I used to watch regularly. [Smile]

That does sound fun.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

I was at Abigael's once, last year. We has a terrific meal, and had ordered the "Coffee Theater Experience". Waiters started bringing out carts and coffee and fiery equipment, when, suddenly and unexpectedly, alarms are sounding. From my husband's ventilator.

(My husband is almost completely paralysed in a Captain Pike kind of way, that a Trekkie and Stephen Hawking fan like myself finds very attractive. He has a ventilator hooked up to a spigot in his neck. You could mistake him for the Six Million Dollar Rabbi, who happens to have a budget-conscious HMO, so when they rebuilt him it wasn't actually with superhuman abilities.)

Well, breathing is very important to my husband, more important, I guess, than coffee or theater, or even dessert is to me, so we paid our check and bid Abigael's a hasty adieu. But I vowed on that day, "Someday I shall return to Abigael's and partake of the Coffee Theater Experience"

So, if we go there, it can be an entertaining time and the fulfillment of my vow.

If we decide to go elsewhere, I will fulfill my vow at another time.

See, coffee, dessert, theater and drama.
