My Favorite Sites of the Day are the Wikipedia entries for 'teh' and 'pwn', and how seriously they take leet.

My favorite part of those entries, discussing variants:

quote:
WTFpwned!? is derived from the contraction of the Internet slang term WTF ("What the ****?") and pwn and is intended to suggest that a player was not just pwned, but that such pwnage happened so quickly that the other player was left wondering what happened (and saying "What the ****?").

PvP Online has just had an interesting spin on it, too. They're even selling the support wristbands.

Aww... brent and francis are hugging. You know what Francis would say if he wasn't involved?

My brothers-in-law and I played some Halo 2 this weekend online. We seriously got pwned.

I also recommend The Real Cyberpunk Fakebook for funny discussion of leetspeak and other net culture silliness. At least 10 years out of date, since I read it in highschool, but very entertaining.

CNN had an article about l337 speak a couple months ago. It's sorta funny how seriously they took it. I think I remember them writing that if you child is saying he pwned some kid at something, then your child is probably a bully. I'll link it here once I find it.

Here we go. Link

quote:
If you're a parent, pay attention to the following list. These words can point to illegal activities or indicate your child is a bully:

H4x = hack

Warez or w4rez = illegal software

Pr0n = porn

Sploitz = exploits, or software vulnerabilities

0\/\/n3d or pwn3d = an assertion of superiority

When this article came out, I showed it to my friends, and for a while we would just use these words all the time, and laugh to ourselves.

Oh Lordy, this is great.

Hot grits/Natalie Portman

Early in Slashdot's history, an anonymous troll (aka the "hot grits guy") would post a reply to every story with a simple "I have poured hot grits down my pants. Thank you." While he mostly got modded down as a troll, the hot grits guy is really the first recurring troll on Slashdot.

Natalie Portman is a popular target for this troll. When referring to her, they frequently profess their endless love for a "naked and petrified" statue of the actress, preferably covered in hot grits. Other incarnations suggest that Natalie Portman pour hot grits into the trolls' underwear, and vice versa.

I think we now need to make a Hatrack River Community wiki entry, including such memorable bits as "Orson Scott Card I Challenge Thee" and "Dude [Cool] Peek-a-boo"

Didn't someone link to an entry for jatraquero or something like that? Was that on wiki or the urban dictionary?
